Hey guys, wanted to show you how to edge a lawn with a string trimmer in lawn care. I also show you the difference when using a stick edger, vs a string trimmer, when you edge a lawn. Again, I personally feel you get the best results when using a stick edger, but there is nothing wrong when starting out, getting an edge line with a string trimmer.
The trimmer I was using is my Redmax 260TS, and the stick edger is the Redmax HEZ2460. I love both of those units, and I have used them for a very long time. Again, if you're going to be doing lawn care for a while, I highly encourage folks to invest in a good quality stick edger.
If you're new to edging with a trimmer, give yourself some slack. It takes time to develop the skill set, to get a nice clean line. Don't be surprised if it takes you a few times to get it just right!
What do you guys prefer, stick edger, or using a string trimmer? Comment down below!

I used to do a lot of extras for customers back when running my truck. Problem with doing few extras, it always leads to more extras. Some of these folks think we should still be cutting grass for $20, like a teen pushing a mower through the neighborhood. They cant understand why their yard will cost $50-$80 a cut.

I personally have worked with both. I do the trimmer from the sidewalk and hold it straight. I have pretty much mastered this technique with the trimmer, but the edger even from a rookie looks better than a master with a trimmer imo.

It is funny to hear peoples BS about a string trimmer working better than an edger. If that was truly the case they would have never made blade edgers. Instead they would have made better adapters to make string trimmers function better as string edgers.

If you roll your feet ( like corps style marching) as you walk, you keep yourself from bouncing. If you’re moving backwards, up on the balls of feet, you’ll be able to move quickly, and keep yourself from bouncing up and down. The less you bounce, the better you keep your eye-line, getting straighter edges. All the summers cutting grass made me a better marcher for marching band too!

As always, great video! Totally agree, you need a stick edger if you want results. String trimmers can be used on already established edges, but not for cutting overgrown edges! If I'm doing a short stretch, on an already established edge, I'll use the trimmer, but for long runs and thicker overgrown edges, a stick edger can't be beat. I do find it interesting that you hold the trimmer across your body to the left, and walk forward in the grass when edging with a trimmer....I have always walked forward (sideways), with the trimmer on my head on my right, walking on the concrete. I may have to try your method, to see if I like it. Thanks for the videos!

I totally agree with you on the yards that have over grown edges. Use the hard blade for edging. I use trimmers for edging and trimming. It's a lot faster for me. Especially if I'm edging and come up to a mailbox. All you have to do is set it straight and trim. I understand why you hold it that way as well(keeps the fuel flowing threw the lines). If you flip the trimmer and walk (forward) while on the concrete side it'll give you a better and deeper cut almost like the blades. But be careful of some debris that might fly up.(😎safety first). You can also use it the same way and walk on the grass but it must remain in the same flipped position I just explained. I'll try to make a video and post it on Instagram the next time I cut and tag you so you can see. Nice work Brian keep it up!

If the grass is overgrown the sidewalks, flat shovel the areas back toward the lawn. When you edge it’ll slice off real clean.
@toddh6234
@toddh6234 4 жыл бұрын
Save time and your back by using a string trimmer to undercut the over growth first, then just use the trimmer to trim the grass back. Super fast no shovel needed. This also helps to find the edge of the sidewalk when its not visible. After you find the edge you can then use and edger or string trimmer to edge.

If your edging with a trimmer on the side walk or driveway, be prepared to keep asking for more string cause that concrete eats it up. You need that edger to create that hole evenly throughout the edge.

Hmmmm, interesting, I was a lawn care pro for 15 years in the 80's/90's & we used either a Power Trim or a Mclane edger with a 2 or 3 horse Briggs engine, never once put a rock through a window because I always put my body between me & the building/parked car/street. But there were times that a rock would hit me in the shin & cut through my pants & draw blood. I started wearing shin guards under my pants. Awe, times have changed, this looks like a pretty good system though.

We charge $10.00 per inch it goes onto the concrete. Find the longest part of overgrowth and thats what to measure and charge. If theres literal soil and sod from years of overgrowth its a way bigger number to charge. We haven't been told that it is too expensive yet! Some recent ones we have had have been between 5-7 inches. Obviously if the area is very big, pricing could change. We use the STIHL FC95 Stick Edger first to get the line. Then use our STIHL 111RX String Trimmer to cut it off. Then go back with the stick edger for the clean cut.

Hey brian, important note for you and your viewers coming from a fellow lawn specialist. You should actually never try to create edges with anything besides a metal bladed edger. Allow me to explain: Grass needs to experience a true and clean cut in order to maintain its health. Weed wackers are meant to be used parallel to the grass.. and using it diagonal or vertical actually does not cut the grass at all but in fact TEARS it. When grass blades are torn, this causes stress on that area of grass. And when grass becomes stressed it becomes more susceptible to being taken over by weeds. As we all know, edges are the worst for weeds anyways so i would recommend either use a metal bladed edger or just leave it alone

Anyone else get satisfaction out of hearing this trimmer line hit the grass and concrete? Or is it me just getting old?

There are other factors in edging too. Like, being left handed versus right. How you hold the trimmer. I don't like to walk on the grass, foot step marks, plus chance of stepping in a hole etc. I like walking on sidewalk myself.

Crew always use the eaters, walk backwards always with straight equipment, and have LONG string out and it's just as good. Only one property they bring the stick edger.

You'll never edge well with a trimmer using that technique. Flip it up, with the engine near your shoulder and walk backwards so you can see exactly where your line is and the debris flies away from you. This is why you need an edger.

Always walk the direction the string is guiding, no weird wobbles and u won't be fighting the string that way. Idk just how I learned it

Paul Blaser You are 100% correct. I can edge better with a weed whacker than most can with an edger because of the exact same method you mentioned. I’ve been using that technique for the past 20 years and has never failed me.
@musclepits
@musclepits 5 жыл бұрын
Wow never seen that technique before. Even with the trimmer being so easy Brian you use the opposite technique and don't go across your body. That was something to see.

flipping it is good... but i think it would wear on the shaft more, especially if you don't pay attention to the fuel

I always do that since I don't mow a lot of houses with sidewalks, it works perfect for beds. But the edger is a bit quicker and more dummy proof.

I totally agree with a Stick edger vs a weed eater. I think the Trimmer is great for edges that are kept up. The new edges our overgrown, i definitely use the Stick edger. By using the Trimmer its one less unit i have to tote around. When you holding the Trimmer go ahead and hold the shaft and have the engine further up . Yes the engine is close to your face. The weight difference is amazing. It seems as if I have better control. Great video, keep running!

I use the stick edger attachment for my Stihl KM131 power heads and the blower attachment to blow out that line once it's edged. Blowing out the soil from the edged line not only helps keep the line clean (stuff regrows in the line if it's not cleaned out), but it also gets the clippings off the hardscape and onto the lawn where I can mulch it up afterwards.

Been doing landscaping for about 7 years, started at 13 years old and was taught to not made a wide gap between lawn and concrete, walk in the concrete if you want straight lines. The edging in my opinion looks ugly... but good job.

Damn dude that stick edger kicks ass!! Nice job! I'm no professional and don't have that much sidewalk. I use an EGO string trimmer to edge, but am now thinking of getting another with a changeable bottom half so i could edge better. You make it look easy!

I think the edger does a better job at creating a trench between the sidewalk and the grass/soil. A trimmer is not built to move dirt.

You edged with weed whacker the wrong way. Try it walking backwards. Feet on concrete. Debri fly's the other way and it fits and goes in the groove where previous edge is

Whether debris flies toward you or away from you has nothing to do with what direction you walk, it's all about what side of the trimmer head you use to trim. For a straight shaft, if you want debris to fly away from you, you have to trim using the the right half of the trimmer head as the debris will fly to the front-right/ front. If you use the left side of the head the debris will fly mostly to the back toward the user. For a curved shaft this would be the reverse of the above since the trimmer head rotates in the opposite direction.

Well you’re both wrong. You walk on the sidewalk in the same direction he was and you hold the whip out in front. Just the same as you would with an edger. It isn’t so bad if you’re a man. I agree an edger will do the best, quickest job and be the easiest to operate.

If you use an edger (and a trimmer) properly and contentiously, your degree of damage/risk is minimal. Not to mention, if you are in this business and you don't have $500K to $1M liability insurance, you're playing with fire in this legal climate we have in the USA. $500K to $1M liability coverage isn't as expensive as you may think, assuming you already have a solid customer base with seasonal/annual contracts. You are using power equipment around homes, cars and people. Liability insurance is necessary.

Edger all day every day, my best selling point is using a trimmer puts unnecessary strain on your back since you have to contort your back in an abnormal position. The edger just lay and walk straight. Great video however.
