My dad was a bricklayer and so was my grandfather and his father, for some reason my dad didn't want me to be a bricklayer, but I saw a flemish bond on a building and wanted to make sure that's what is was, to this day I live in New Orleans and love to view all the craftsmanship in some of the old brick buildings. Very few people notice, I do and appreciate the fine craft that it displays...

Many thanks for the video as always. Just completed my first Flemish bond garden wall in 35 years. Had lots of nice comments from 1 bricky, 3 builders and various neighbours so pleased with myself. One thing I had big problems with was dealing with misshapen bricks when trying to plumb the piers ie on the stretcher section the top would measure 107mm and the bottom would read 103mm. Trying to plumb was a sausage. Any hints would be most welcome.

I often leave the queen out and lay the stretcher first, I'd quickly measure off of the quoin header and mark in the mortar where the stretcher goes, It makes levelling the queen so much easier. Excellent video as always, very informative!

If you think about it logically, alternate rows of headers and stretchers have to be stronger.English bond is much stronger than Flemish bond for the walls thicker more than 1½ brick. Flemish bond shows more attractive and pleasing appearance of masonry work. Flemish bond is economical as it uses broken brick bats, although it requires some extra mortar for additional joints.

good video as always mate but i think we would learn more form them if you were to do 2 corners you have soke about how you do the corners first then run the rest in on a line but i think it would be helpfull to see what happens when they meet up as depending on the length it wont alway be possible to marrie up the header streacher similar for all the other bonds as well how do you deall with that

What brought me here was the writer Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club, believe it or not. He was on the Joe Rogan podcast, # 1158, talking about a cab driver in Philadelphia who asked if Palahniuk knew why Liberty Hall (1756) was in such great shape and why it would be around for a long time more. Palahniuk casually replies it's because the bricks were laid in Flemish bond, which took the cabbie by surprise. Nobody ever got the answer right. I had no idea there would be different ways of laying brick, but it's fascinating to know about methods that experienced craftsmen consider their favorite.

Hi Rodian, I watch a channel called "Martin Zero" I think it would be great if you did a collaboration or at a minimum a review of some of his videos. He ventures and around old Manchester/ North West's industrial past and talks about the History. BUT the old brickwork that he gets to experience in his video is amazing. It would be great to understand how, from a bricklayers perspective, how hard and the effort it talks to complete such old feat of brickwork engineering. Keep up the good work, looking forward to your next video pal.

Hey man, Thanks for the video! And I think you have demonstrated the only time a brick can be used for a-fence...🤔🤨🤷‍♂️ hahaha I think _Flemish-Bond_ is just as strong as _English-Bond_ but it looks better! However, when it comes to stitching in a pier, then I think _English-Bond_ is superior in terms of strength and economy as the _English-Bond_ uses less bricks and the stretchers run deeper into the pier also. So yeah, I’m a _Flemish-Bond_ guy and I’m gonna use it for the foundations of my new _Timber-Frame_ house and I’m gonna use *Staffordshire Blues (Class A)* all the way up 6.5 feet, because they are waterproof, insanely strong and are also very very precise in terms of their size. It might be a bit expensive, but I have to use bricks because of where it’s located and I don’t have a massive crane! 👍👍👍

Question?? What is the max span a 9” retaining garden wall can be before you have to build your first pier?
@140rware
@140rware 4 жыл бұрын
That would depend on how tall the wall is and how much it is actually holding back. If in doubt, put them in. A 9 inch will still fall over if it stays damp. A nice bit of tumbling in looks fantastic. I don't know the answer, I don't remember ever being taught that as there are too many variables.

Kristian Cooper That would be garden wall bond, not Flemish. I was shown at college, a steel ruler being able to be plunged down through a new built Flemish wall from top to bottom. It was also used to show that 3/4 used at stopped ends do not work technically correct although the prevent cracking and peeling out. So agreed that English is the strongest bond.
