Thought I'd have a go using Charlie's trowel. I've adopted plenty of his methods over the last year or so and all of them have been beneficial in some way!...Ive had a 12/11" trowel for years now..so thought I'd try out the current trowel we all see him using in his video! 😄

I just got myself one but didn't like the handle so bought a red plastic one ( which didn't fit the tang is smaller on the 7 inch ) but with some epoxy resin poured into the hole it fits beautifully. Now I've got the perfect trowel for brickwork.

Inorder you use The Collison Trowel properly, you must be dressed like a member of a boy band, otherwise the magic dont happen... them shorts are not going to cut the mustard Izzy 😆👌. Collison looks better going to work, than I do going out 🤣

A smaller sized trowel , in the right hands will save your wrist and lay just as fast , once learned . I'm actually one of those guys that suggested Charlie switch. I've been laying bricks and blocks for over 50 years. I've tried all ways ...

100%. When we started there was nothing bigger than a 10" trowel. 7" was very common. What is common now is tennis elbow in young men. It's no good earning loads on price if you can't lay past the age of 50.

I worked with a bricklayer before who used a 12 inch for everything and he liked it to gauge in between blocks to make sure a block could fit in the gap. Everyone who’s been doing it all their life has little tricks they use to make their life easier. Its all what you’re comfortable with

Been a bricklayer for 35 years ,and 20 years a Forman for most of the big sub contractors in the south east and London ,and had 2 years in Germany ,and have experienced lots of bricklayers ,the best aways use small trowels ,

I use 8-9 inch for block and brick ..30 years laying without any problems.

Thought them beds were thick there izzy .I used to use a 12 inch for blockwork then an 11 for brickwork .years of bricklaying has takes its toll.so the 12 inch is in the tool bag now i currently use a 10 inch marshalltown for all uses as it helps my wrist elbow and shoulder. I do have a w rose that comes out now and then if my elbow starts mate 🤣🤣🧱🧱 .i think my advice would be use the trowel you are most happy with that suits you. Good luck mate Justin 👍

Hahaha well that use to be my moto but I try to avoid working too hard nowadays 😂😂 I find laying bricks/blocks very easy on the body compared to half the other jobs that come with doing private work, such as digging out drains and all the other stuff that comes along with it😂 get me on site with a forklift please😂🙏🙏🍻

I like an 11" MT Philly myself for blockwork. On the brick pic and dip i like a MT coke trowel the wide one. Best damn pic and dip trowel hands down!

This is like the great carpenter debate over hammer weight and styles. I like a long shank long nose 18oz hammer, even for framing and roofing. Heavy waffle faced hammers blow your arms to bits after a day of swinging.

Charlie does have his tables at like his waist though so he isn’t bending over. You have yours set to your trowel, an like you, he is used to using his at his table height.

The lad who's job it is has said it's beyond fixing..as it's already leaning 12 degrees with cracks all the way though..easily put your fist in..accedent waiting to happen 😨😨😨

You have to use what’s better for you everyone’s different I guess but the 12” trowel looks like it’s more useful for checking stuff. Your deffo more methodical than many other bricklayers - I like the way you do your block work to suit the needs of the insulation so it doesn’t bulge out whereas I saw Charlie Collison doing some and it was all moving over the place didn’t look too good on a KZfaq video!

To All these people going on about bad wrists nd elbows. Just becauce your using a 10+ inch trowel doesnt mean you have to load it with an ridiculously heavy amount.... there are an army of brickys who use big trowels but dont get the problems usually assoicsted with them

I use same 7inch trowel can lay jist as many bricks or blocks amd no problems with my elbows and grip

Looks like a nice job that mate. That gable. Who knows what you will have to do with that 👍. I would say only use a trowel that size for bricks. Have have two trowels one is small and the other is verry small. I should measure it .lol. They that worn down I haven't got a clue how big they are👍👍👍

Cheers mate! Spoke about the gable..come up with a plan involving lots of windposts concreted into cube footings behind it at least 1m deep. I suggested to then use bolts and rebar though the gable to fix into the posts and the big X ties you see on old buildings to stop them bellying out👌👌 then just more steels and block flat pillars to bolt all existing brickwork to from the outside 😂😂🤞🤞 Definitely giving it a go on bricks next week to see how I get on..its a lovely trowel to use..but just so foreign 😂 I'd love to see them trowels mate, you'll have to send us a picture fella👌👌

I have always used anmarshalltown 12 inch and don’t plan to change It feels so natural to me. Don’t think I could use anything else

Agreed. Just got a new marshaltown 1912, looked massive compared to my 1912 going on 19 9-1/2. Started using it and after laying 2 bricks thought why on earth did I let my trowel get this small!

I preferred the 11" tho 10 or 12 similar not arguing the point, same with London vs Canadian. One thing I always liked tho was the phenolic handle, I'd been told wood or rubber was best but once had no choice but to buy phenolic & much preferred it, never used anything but since. It's warmer on your hand, better for tapping down & easier to clean in my experience.

He uses the little trowel on bricks mostly 🧱 and he’s not bumping 10 mill every corse . And Charlie’s not a spring chicken he’s not got the joints of a bloke in his early 20s .

When you get older your arm will appreciate using a smaller trowel its all in your technique been doing this trade for over 30 years bigger isn't always better lol but too each his own fella tradesman

you are measuring from a chip board floor and guessing on a 241mm joist. so 263mm above gf ceiling?

I’m actually downgrading to a 10inch, I’ve used a 12 for years and at 42 my wrist and hand are starting to suffer, got to look after yourself.

Good video Izzy . But You might have been better off doing the comparison on a wall that you didn’t have to bed up so much . You’d probably need to stick to bedding for one block at a time with the tilers trowel . The tilers trowel is a handy one to have in the bag.

Issy get on a 12" london pattern less of a wide heel and give them block a rub down( along the length not side to side?) rather than tapping ....

Trying to do long bed with the small trowel is pointless, you'll spend so much time picking up muck you'll instantly hate it. Try picking up enough to lay one block then lay that block, the big beds aren't helping at all. You could always try dropping sizes in stages, so go down to a 9 inch trowel get the hang of that then try the 7 inch again 👍🏻

Just before everyone goes mad. I'm not trying to copy Charlie, however I, like many other brickies have adopted lot of his practices because they work very well! So I thought I'd have a go with the trowel hes currently using. (7" Marshalltown tilers trowel) Definitely does not feel natural compared to my other 11/12"s👌 but I'm I figure with a bit more time playing with it I'll get use to it. Also..reason for big bed joints is explained in the video😉..but basically the wall plate HAS to be bedded on at 940mm to marry up with the existing brickwork on the old barn

Mate the 7” probably wouldn’t of even been as bad if you had proper 10mm joints . Having to bed up with that little thing was long. Sure itd be nice on brick give it a go before you give it away.

@@IzzytheBricky I’d buy it off you if i was on dry clay bricks, but these concrete bricks are so heavy, long spread pic n dip is the only way to go, I wouldn’t like a trowel full and a coni brick in my hands at the same time haha

Pick and dip is the way to go..you can plod away and you're x amount of bricks ahead of the other guy as he ain't even laying yet.

fact is trowel size don't make a lot of difference to speed, a bigger trowel however is responsible for tennis or golfers elbow, I myself use a 12 inch Marshall town for the simple reason it lasts longer and is the same price but am full of cortisone injections for elbow/wrist/shoulder pain

That's good logic, save a couple of quid but destroy the elbow/wrist/shoulder and get pumped full of steroid injection but hey get a but more value out of that trowel. You might save 50 over a decade. Shrewd

Sorry Izzy them beds are far to big. Spending all your time tapping. Also seem to be moving and changing direction a lot. Get in a steady rhythm. I have been laying bricks for nearly 40 years. Always used a 12in trowel. Started using my discarded 9in marshalltown 2 years ago. Love it

Nothing wrong using a 12 inch trowel what ever suits elbows will get fucked with small or big trowel. Boards down long benefit from bigger trowel but really need to get them boards up to waist level 800mm a think ma stands are something like that and that’s where you will benefit with a 9-10inch trowel. 7inch only good on dry bricks with frogs picking and dipping.

Hi Mate u obviously didnt try the trowel I recommended from B an Q, by Magneson. Dead cheap but great handle balance. Yes I have marshalltowns. But for value quality. It's good in my opinion. Much better than that pointing trowel haha. So did u not like it, or not got one ?

@@IzzytheBricky All good buddy. I'm like a Foreman type now, and have taught lads, but sad some of them not got the staying power. Gange spliff heads.. I'm planning a front wall, in Flemish bond 3 colour bricks. One end circular .other radius to the pillar.with dog tooth. Its only small wall so got to be careful not to put too much into it

@@IzzytheBricky Yes lads today, but still some. I was a late learner at 20 So I really wanted it bad. Love bricklaying. It's an art. I always say it's more than brawn. We need brain, working out skills mathematics, geometry, as well as stamina and strength with a strong back. Defo a mans game, especially if you have to lay them 5" or 125mm and 6" or 150mm solid concrete blocks. Be proud of what u do. Humble too. Yes will take photo when get around to it. I know it will catch on this one I'm planning, but dont mind sharing. You good bricky mate. That gable you done superb

Good should mate, I've seen 4x1 bedded on with 80mm wallplate bolted on top a couple of times..all the same really..as long as it dont move too far..its all good😂👌🍻

Trowels are like all hand tools and golf clubs, its in the feel, one size dont fit all,

Joints on block are angled back to much when applied. Try to keep joint near same plane as face of block.

Don't leave gaps in your spread. Don't leave mortar hanging. Two much mortar for flat bottom units if not bedding up.

I did find it good to getting into tight spots in the cavity and that..which was quite nice...also my big trowel catches the wind like a kite..so it was nice to having that blow about in my hand all day😂 spot on mate👌🍻🍻

If you like a 12" trowel great, if you like a small trowel great. Every one is different. All these people saying a 12 inch trowel will do this to your wrist or what ever, everyone is built different. Some people's body can handle it, some can't. Just like some athletes get injured and some don't, some people catch cold some don't, and some people get tennis elbow using a large trowel and some people don't.

@@IzzytheBricky same as. I use my 12 till eye level, then a smaller worn one for the next four course. Gauge or tile setters when working out of a bucket. And my worn one for intricate stuff. Keep up the good work.

Spot on lads! I'm gonna have a play with it next week on some brickwork, if i cant get on with it, I'll send it over to you boys to have a go! Turns out that 940 was the perfect hight he needs for the WallPlate to marry up with the existing gable..so I guess it was actually on purpose 👌👌😉 Hope your both well! Who sets anything to 940mm tell him I said he’s a right plank ! Obviously got no clue of brick gauge or building I would have taken his work down and started again 😄

Aah I know..but after talking to him about it...the wallplate needed to be set at 940, to marry up with the hand built roof going on to match the existing gable. So can see what hes trying to do! Ey hope your good mate! Have a good weekend buddy!🍻🍻

Keep your trowel hand closest to the line when spreading ffs ,and dont let joiners near your work,that's the problem now any tool thinks he an just do a tradesman job,would NEVER been allowed in the past
