The Marshall Mathers LP is the third studio album by American rapper Eminem, released on May 23, 2000, by Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records. The album was produced mostly by Dr. Dre and Eminem, along with The 45 King, the Bass Brothers, and Mel-Man. Recorded over a two-month period in several studios around Detroit, the album features more introspective lyricism, including Eminem's thoughts on his rise from rags to riches, the criticism of his music, and his estrangement from his family and wife. A transgressive work, it incorporates horrorcore and hardcore hip hop, while also featuring satirical songs. Featured appearances include Dido, RBX, Sticky Fingaz, Bizarre, Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, Nate Dogg, and D12.
Like its predecessor, The Marshall Mathers LP was surrounded by significant controversy upon its release, while also propelling Eminem to the forefront of American pop culture. Criticism centered on lyrics that were considered violent, homophobic, misogynistic, as well as the reference to the Columbine High School massacre. Lynne Cheney criticized the lyrics at a United States Senate hearing, while the Canadian government considered refusing Eminem's entry into the country. Despite the controversy of the album, it received acclaim from critics, who praised Eminem's lyrical ability and considered the album to have emotional depth.
The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, staying atop for eight consecutive weeks. A significant commercial success compared to the release of The Slim Shady LP just the previous year, the album sold 1.78 million copies in its first week, which made it among the fastest-selling studio albums in the United States. The album produced the singles "The Real Slim Shady", "The Way I Am", "Stan", "I'm Back" and "Bitch Please II". Among other publications, Rolling Stone named it the best album of 2000.
The Marshall Mathers LP has been included in several lists of the greatest albums of all time and is widely regarded as Eminem's best album. It has sold 21 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time and certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It was nominated for Album of the Year and won Best Rap Album at the 2001 Grammy Awards, while "The Real Slim Shady" won Best Rap Solo Performance. The Marshall Mathers LP 2, the album's sequel, was released in 2013.

This album is a reaction to the backlash of his first slim shady album. He felt because he’s white, is signed with dr.Dre, and had some catchy sounding songs, he got lumped in with pop groups at the time that were on MTV all the time like a N sync, Backstreet Boys, Ricky Martin etc, so he decided to make an album with even worse lyrics to piss off he critics even more, and to further separate himself from the pop acts on MTV.

Kind of true. Some of the lyrics on I'm Back, Marshall Mathers and in particular The Way I Am were a response to that, but overall most of the album was already written by mid-late 99 and was originally titled Amsterdam - it was mostly a response to the controversy that his violent/drug content caused, not being a pop act

Man, your dad's a cool cat. It's awesome that he recognizes the shock value for what it is without letting it affect his sensibilities. Slim Shady always came with exaggerated levels of violence and sheer absurdity back then. Still astonishes me that people took those kind of cartoonish lyrics seriously.

Recently lost my mom. Not long ago I heard a song that just resonated with and I could think why. Then one day it dawned on me that it was one of those songs I would have shared with her right away. Then she would have gone down the rabbit hole listening to the group looking for more…..it was a really hard week when that hit me. But it’s also what is helping me work though the loses of the recent years.

@@BVaccaro88you must be my doppelgänger! My moms did the same thing lmao 🤣 literally same albums and everything I was also 11 she got them for me for Christmas I started bumping right after we opened gifts and she walked into my room asked what I thought I was listening to it was even funnier when she realized it was the two CD’s she had just watched me open with such joy in her eyes ! She had them for about two days before she gave them back with my little Sony no skip xd player and said to not bump it on my actual stereo or my dad would kill her 🤣 🤣!! Moms actually became a fan of hip hop from EM to Wayne she’s a great woman with a huge heart raised most of my gang bangin homies by the time I was in my early teens ish was wild !!! Now that I’m grown and most of my friends are passed or in prison I know she looks back and thinks she could’ve done so much better but she is great ! She might have given to much freedom but she knew I was going to do what I wanted she was just always there for anything ! The definition of unconditional love ! An she wasn’t an enabler I became A bad drug addict at about 15 slamming H and she kicked me out I had a rough relationship with her for about 10’years after that and now finally I’m almost 10’years clean and mom’s still here I could call her right now as a grown ass man with a beautiful child of my own and if I was in trouble she would do anything to help! Lmao 🤣 anyways thanks for letting me get in my feels about Moms for a min! Big shout out to all the good ones out there ! Got me all in my feels on an Eminem post 🤣 I love it! Yeah it's definitely one of those songs u skip on a first listen but it's also one of those songs that grows on u after u let the whole album play back to back from front to back just like the songs "Who Knew" & "I'm Back" & "Amityville" & "Remember Me" cuz the album is so good so u let the lesser known songs & songs with the beats that start off a little slower at the beginning just play all the way through & thats when u finally realize u are really stupid for misjudging those type of tracks or beats & realize it's actually a hidden classic or masterpiece of a gem I found but still it's hiding in plain sight at the same time 💯 It's like fine aged wine when u really think about it cuz it has to grow on u💯 I think alot of the best songs on all albums are the ones that need a couple listens before they hit u correctly in the right way💯 Honestly this whole album ain't really got a single bad song even all the lesser favorites eventually became the favorites after u listen to all the most well known hits & catchest ones first 💯 It's fucking crazy how good the tracklist really is on this album & I might like some albums better but the tracklist on this one is perfect & everything goes together perfectly, it might be the single best tracklist on a album of all time💯 even if he got songs that u like better in his other albums, this one is masterfully back to back perfectly put together in every way even the lesser songs are all classics no doubt 💯

If you guys do more Eminem albums you might want to give your dad a quick run down on Eminem and a little about his personal life/career because that is one of the big reasons he is so popular. People feel like they know him personally because of all the details about his life that he puts into his music, and it kind of makes the music sit differently with you when you form that connection and understand where he is coming from.

@@Cujobob nah, kanye spoke out against bush during the donation call marathon thing for hurricane Katrina. “George bush doesn’t care about black people” on live television in front of millions for a charity fundraiser for victims of the hurricane. In my opinion why he spoke up for trump was purely because he felt a connection with trump as they were both ruthlessly criticized, unfairly, by the media. I’m sure he felt a bond due to that and an opportunity to make connections by getting close to a sitting a president. But Kanye has definitely had his share of political critiques. Kanye hasn’t spoke out as much through his music as em has but they both have used their voice to pursue personal political gains.

The Steve Berman skit is exactly what it sounds like. The story is that after submitting this album for approval, he was told it was good but didn't have anything to market as a #1 hit. In anger and frustration Eminem produced and recorded "the way I am" which was the 1st beat that he himself produced. That gives the line "let's face it, I'm not gonna be able to top what "my name it," so much more meaning. Immediately after, he's supposed to have recorded "the real slim shady," then handed the album back to execs and told them "there's your hit." That's why those 3 tracks are in that order.

I think that it's pretty amazing that your dad could pull out Eminem's crazy ability and how talented he is because most people cannot get past the outlandish lyrics of his first few albums. Much respect to Pops. New subscriber from this video, yeah man Kendrick and Cole will be two more goats for him to check out.🤘. But if he has not heard it already he has to hear some of the latest Eminem because he has worked on his skill to the point I don't think he can be beat at this point with the clever lines, wordplay, Speed and Cadence. It's a science to Eminem
