2001 (sometimes called The Chronic 2001) is the second studio album by rapper and hip hop producer Dr. Dre. It was released on November 16, 1999, by Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records as the follow-up to his 1992 debut album, The Chronic. The album was produced mainly by Dr. Dre and Mel-Man, as well as Lord Finesse, and features several guest contributions from fellow U.S. rappers such as The D.O.C., Hittman, Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, Xzibit, Eminem, and Nate Dogg.
2001 exhibits an expansion on Dre's debut G-funk sound and contains gangsta rap themes such as violence, crime, promiscuity, sex, drug use, and street gangs. The album debuted at number 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, selling 516,000 copies in its first week. It produced 3 singles that attained chart success and has been certified 6× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA); and as of August 2015 the album has sold 7,800,000 copies in the United States. 2001 received generally positive reviews from critics, many of whom praised the music although some found the lyrics objectionable.

One of the finest-produced albums of all time, and I’m not just limiting that to Hip-hop. I think the lyrical content HAD to be rather straightforward to smartly highlight the star of the show, which is Dre’s beats.

I just realized, I think the reason Eminem has that ad lib in Bang Bang is because he wrote Dre's verse in that track too. I never really paid attention before but those are his rhyme patterns, and when I looked it up he is listed as a writer. He wouldn't get a writing credit just for the "can we talk it out" snippet. Looking at all the credits, there's even more writing by Eminem than I noticed before this listen

Also, another reason people said Dre fell off is because after The Chronic he did "Dr. Dre Presents: The Aftermath" a compilation album. It wasn't received as well. Didn't get much appraisal. And the reviews were ok at best. It was the first album under Aftermath, with various artists like before though. So he references this when saying people didn't fuck with him and thought he fell off.

The sample your dad was talking about is probably by Soul Mann & The Lament - Bumpy's Lament. There are some youtube video's that let you hear every sample of Dr. Dre's The Chronic & Chronic 2001. I bet there is a lot more samples that your dad would recognize!

Hamburg, Germany. I got that album when it was released. It traveled with me to Columbus, Ohio over Xmas and New Year 1999/2000 to visit some friends. We’ve listen to it so often. DMX, Biggie and Missy Elliot were also in heavy rotation. My friend’s mother and aunt on a road trip to Florida love these album too😈
