Great series! I saved a 1971 130202 5hp from the junk yard pile the other day. Thing was sitting in a mud hole half submerged and it only took 5 mins of work to get it to crank over and run off carb cleaner. I'm currently searching for a new air filter housing and a connecting rod because they were both ruined. I love keeping these little engines running, they're so reliable.

I have A 1967 7HP and I didn’t even need to restore it because it had super low hours and all, and I mean ALL parts were original, and it had all the original gaskets and had never been taken apart. I am keeping to myself because it idles and revs like a 30s V8. I love restoring old Briggs, but sometimes it is good to just let the old paint, or rusty parts tell it’s story. I have never had it repainted, and it still looks great. Keep doing what you do!

Sometimes its nice to mechanically restore engines but leave them in there "work clothes"... I also use that as an excuse to not buy paint lol. My engines are the only thing keeping me from going crazy since school (and pretty much anything fun) is closed till next year in NY. Keep up the good work Mini RoadKing! ;)

Man nice videos! For the past few years I’ve been modding predator/Honda clones but I’ve recently got ahold of a older Briggs flathead from my dads place. He passed away a year ago and I found it at his house sitting outside in the elements for who knows how long. Brought it home and sanded the coil, sprayed it with starting fluid, and it popped right off. Now I want to restore (loosely) it and put it on a old minibike. Anyways your video helped me so much as I’ve never messed with a Briggs only clone type engines. Thanks for the help brother, new sub here

If you want more performance out of it, grind the intake valve lash to 20-25 thousandths or so which will bypass the cam’s compression release and it will make way more power lol

Awesome job man. Looks and sounds great. Ur very good at what u do. Thanks for helping me learn. I just got a gocart with a similar engine. It was seized up when I got it but have it freed now. Hoping I can do some simply cleaning and get it running. Piston and cyclinder wall look new. Intake valve was also stuck. I got it free but there is gunk down in where the valve is that I cant get to. I need to somehow get it cleaned out and tey to get it running. Thanks.

Great job, and thanks for sharing. Could I ask why you didn’t lap the valves in earlier, when everything was apart? Wouldn’t you have had to pull piston, cam, crank etc all back apart again to clean up the valve grinding paste? Or am I totally missing something?
@WildfoxFabrication
@WildfoxFabrication 4 жыл бұрын
No, it’s just the next step before i put the valve springs in and close up the head. i did it in the order you see in the video. put the crank, tappets, cam, and piston assembly in, and then closed it up. then you grind the valves before setting the valve clearance, then you put the springs in and can bolt on the head.

Thanks! For all the small engines i've had apart, i've never done a 5hp briggs. I need to do new rings and clean up the valves/seats. This looks a lot easier than I expected. Mine has the crappy carburetor with the plastic pull plug for the choke. Any suggestions for a good carb for a governed engine (wood splitter)? Any low-effort modifications that can give it a touch more chooch, like a different carb or different exhaust? I'm in the eastern US and some of my hardwoods are tenacious. I modify everything else for fun so why not 😁

there should be one long wire which runs down beneath the flywheel and connects to the condenser. the other wire should be short and with a loop at the end and you put that on the bolt that secures the coil as you bolt it on, to ground the coil.

Nice! My grandpa had the same compressor for like 40 years! Don't even ask me how many antique cars he painted with it! It unfortunately started to rod knock real bad last year and the parts are just to expensive. The pulley from the compressor is now the flywheel on my Hit Miss Briggs! Just keep enough oil in it and make sure you drain out all the water and it will serve you well! Just curious, why do you reassemble everything and then paint it? I thought u usually paint everything when it's all apart, and if you just paint it when it's together, what the point of pulling the whole thing completely apart? Also please tell me you bent the little tabs over that lock the connecting rod bolts in place? They are very important! I don't want to see this thing blow up on you for a silly little mistake like that! Dude, you need to get yourself a nice wire wheel! Even if it's just an attachment for a drill! They're so useful and save a ton of time with stuff like the bolts! Seems like it runs very nicely! Can't wait to see how this one comes out! This is kinda making me want to restore my early 60's 5 HP!
@WildfoxFabrication
@WildfoxFabrication 4 жыл бұрын
There is a lot of little things i did that i didn’t include in the final edit of the video because they took up a lot of time and were pretty boring, so yes i bent their rod bolt tabs over. I don’t paint it when it’s ALL taken apart, i just take off some of the main big parts and then paint it, not a big deal, and i wanted to get three videos out of this. Yes, i should get a wire wheel for my drill, but i haven’t yet and now that this whole thing is happening it’s even harder and i can make do with what i have. what did you do with the motor of the compressor? they’re nice big 230v induction motors not worth throwing away at all.
@colin_5839
@colin_5839 4 жыл бұрын
@@WildfoxFabrication Ohh ok good! I figured that was the case, but just wanted to check! Interesting, I take the RoadKing approach to my restorations. I don't think I would have been able to do my NPR6 resto without a wire wheel! Then again, I strip all the paint off before repainting... Don't worry, I saved the motor! I have quite a few large motors like that kicking around, you never know when they will come in handy! I actually use the belt from time to time , and the small pulley that went on the motor side is going to get used in an engine project soon too! Maybe with this new big compressor, you could get a paint sprayer for all your restorations! :)

Soaking the bolts in vinegar is NOT a good idea as it WILL cause hydrogen embrittlement, reducing the strength of the head bolts and rod bolts. If you MUST use an acid to clean up the parts bake them in the oven at 350 to 400F for 8-24 hours within 2 hours of acid contact. I once soakes a bycycle chain in vinegar to remoce rust and when I installed it it snapped like glass the first time I stood on the pedal - - -

Mate is this really true? Have never heard this mentioned, and I must have watched thousands of hours of men in sheds cleaning metal with vinegar or phosphoric acid. I just use degreaser and evaporust but would be good to know if acid cleaning is harmful. Baking in an oven sounds tedious also tbh
