I lost 6 chickens to a fox. On video… of course one was my favorite one. Almost lost a runner duck to a hawk. His leg was broken. Made a splint. Wrapped it and kept in inside for 4 weeks. He swam in the tub and rehabbed. He’s still going strong. Now he has a goose buddy that fended off the last hawk. Hanging had one since.

Did you ever find out if it was defo a fox attack? My grandmothers hens were dragged out of a seemingly impenetrable run and eaten by rats some years ago (adult large breed hens) and a friend had theirs dragged through small bars and they subsequently vanished into the hedgerow by stoats, which they caught on wildlife cameras.
@BrimwoodFarm
@BrimwoodFarm 3 ай бұрын
I never found out BUT I think it's similar to your friend; a polecat or stoat. My neighbours had their chickens killed INSIDE a shut coop where only a small critter like that could have gotten in.

Sorry to hear. It is terribly annoying. I lost a hen, NO IDEA how as I had 3in there and two were left in the morning. Luckily it wasn't my green egg layer (only one I have atm) but I did hatch 7 of her eggs so I'm hoping a few of the pullets next year lay some green eggs. No avian flu closures this year.. 🎉

Hi Geoff. A bad night, let's hope your additional wire puts thew predator off. You just have ons Norfolk Grey cockerel left. It was great to look at some of your aviary birds and the tupped sheep. Fingers crossed all will be ok. Best. Johnny and Jacob.

Where you showed the beginning of looking where the fox might have gotten in i could see a gap which looked like the wire had come loose but might have just been the angle (at 3:31) look at the right bottom corner where the wire is it looks like its bent at the top or coming away from the frame?

Yes to extra electric around your chickentractors, but now already, not sometime in the future. Having had succes once makes them try harder, if you do no more then one small step at the time they'll learn to compensate and keep having succes. So and electric and the extra wire to keep paws out (as well as marten and such who would fit through that mesh easily).
@BrimwoodFarm
@BrimwoodFarm 6 ай бұрын
I do wonder whether it may have been a stoat or polecat as I have had the occasional lost with them too and you mentioned, they can easily fit through.

Once a fox has managed to get a chicken, and they will come back. I've used these panels and the wires can expand when you pull something through. I had similar problem and used a camera and caught it doing it again hr pulled the chicken straight through the gaps. Fox Brut strength

Good to hear from someone who's also used these panels - I guess that explains the cockerels that disappeared. Luckily fox hasn't been back!

Poor birds hope he doesn’t come back, do you have Badgers, we’ve had trouble with them in the past and have found them to be WAY more determined at getting the chickens. Just wondering if they could get their nose under the bottom rail and lift the run just enough to snatch a bird or two X
@BrimwoodFarm
@BrimwoodFarm 6 ай бұрын
I do have badgers, though I've never seen them this far out. I know they're pretty brutal so I would have expected to see more damage - on the wooden back, for example. But who knows!

@@BrimwoodFarm Thats true, when we had one the feisty badger ripped whole door panel off. I wouldn’t have minded but it was a home made sturdy henhouse with 2x2 corners on it. I’ll never underestimate a badger again x

About being pulled out through the bars, unfortunately that is possible. I had all my hens killed by racoons last year and then I put the last one in a dog crate and they ate her through the bars. It's wild. Sorry for your loss.

Yeah, we have a rainy nightmare over here at the moment. I mean, you can see from when I've just moved them to the following day how much the ground is already flattened and saturated. Going to need an ark at this rate!

Hi Geoff, sorry that you lost some cockerels to foxy. I am a firm believer that it is our responsibility to protect our livestock from foxes and other predators rather than kill them / hunt them etc. I think you believe that too. The chicken tractors mean that your poultry is out in the cold all night. Are they ok? I shut mine away in a couple of every night so they are safe and warm. Is it ok to leave them exposed to the cold? Especially during UK winter?
@BrimwoodFarm
@BrimwoodFarm 6 ай бұрын
Yes, I completely agree with that sentiment. I prefer to leave the chickens out as we have such wet winters. Damp causes so many issues and respiratory problems; my chicken tractor birds tend far better in health than the ones I have to shut in. I'm hoping we don't get avian flu this year!

You did a good job reinforcing with extra wire, but from what I've heard from other KZfaqrs, you used the wrong stuff. You used chicken wire. You need to use hardware cloth. It's similar to chicken wire as it comes in the same size rolls, but it has square-ish holes and is made from heavier stands of wire. Remember when the fox got your best silky rooster back when you still lived in town? He got through wood. 💖🌞🌵😷
@BrimwoodFarm
@BrimwoodFarm 6 ай бұрын
Agreed ... we don't really have hardware cloth readily available over here so need to go buy a roll of strengthened wire. Chicken wire is too easily broken so a bit of a temporary option at the moment.
