I have a dumb question as a noob who has recently found your channel: how much of this growth is from the old stuff in the jars versus new stuff from the lids being open? Like if you had done this with just adding water and sealing the jars, would you have had similar results? Thanks for the video and I'm looking forward to more crow content :)

It is also noteworthy that tap water is not sterile. Tap water has tons of microbes in it.

This is quite the opposite of a dumb question! You're very astute to point to this unknown factor. We can't really know since it would require more jars, some of which contained only water, with and without lids. But keep up this kind of questioning! That's an essential part of science 😊

I think it's relevant to note that he usually focuses on organisms found naturally in his local eco-system, different organisms are introduced through rain water, tap water and small animals, bacteria or algae already in his direct environment. So unlike some other channels that focus on larger scale controlled exotic ecosystems he tends to focus more on biodiversity commonly found in non-exotic ecosystems with life taken from what is found directly around him. Although I understand people's interest in knowing how much in these jars is from tapwater that has been introduced I think it might not make a huge difference as he tends to use tapwater for most of his projects, on top of that I know as also a resident from the Netherlands that our water is generally quite clean and consistent, our moderate climate also affects the ability for growth of organisms to thrive, during colder months a lot of organisms die and he's even featured this on his channel by showing how open ecosystems he's had go through different phases as temperature changes and natural debris and bacteria are introduced over time. That is where his interest seems to lie and what his videos tend to be about, it's an approach from a natural ecological standpoint.

I did a similar thing. I took dried mud from the bottom of a dried up puddle and kept it for 6 months. I then put it in a jar of well water. About 3 weeks later I had a bunch of ostracods swimming around the jar. I didn't have a microscope at the time. I guess I'll have to repeat the test now that I have a microscope. Love seeing the stuff you do!

Nature never fails to amaze me, and your jars always add to my excitement. Life finds a way…always. No matter how many extinction events have, and will occur on this amazing planet of ours, She starts again, with rudimentary building blocks of life that will evolve into more complex life forms. I love your curiosity, and your endless interest in what happens on these tiny scales. It would be interesting to see what changes a freeze and thaw cycle would effect on one of your jars. Thank you for always feeding your curiosity, and ours, by following the principle of “instant life…just add water”. You remind me of what Leuehoke must have felt when he first saw drinking water with his primitive microscope, and saw his tiny monsters. Please never lose that part of you that wants to know, and jumps in with both feet. You remain one of my favourite channels, and wherever that mind of yours decides to go…I will gladly follow. Stay well and happy, and do keep up your seduction of the corvids along with your more usual peeks into the tiny worlds a jar can hold when you put a few random ingredients in, and add water.🖤🇨🇦

Awesome video. A longer piping tool would enable you to both keep your hand clean and have better isolation for this cool experiment. The miniature creatures on your hand can affect the ecosystem process. Why did you not seal the jars after adding water?

A tip for putting the cover glass in the water is been a paperclip to wear. It forms a 90° angle and use the smaller bent inside part to put it under the water.

If I'm not mistaken, this smaller pot was the pot that contained the ecosphere that had 24 hours of light, right? I would like to say that I love your videos, and I even made some ecospheres because of you. I would love to see the effects of movement on an ecosphere like a jar filled halfway and placed on a rock tumbler to see if constant motion hinders growth or if a heartier ecosystem emerges

Your channel inspired me to take an old whiskey bottle and put tap water and some dead plant material in it. I’ve got a lot of red silt stuff forming that I think is iron rich as I added some chicken blood at some point to see what would happen. You got me into closed ecosystems. I have one on my desk right beside me. I do have a question, the water is an insane black color. Like, no light is doing anything in there. Its so black that when shining a flashlight on the side of the jar, no light makes it to the other side. Dose anyone know why this is? I dont really mind and im going to let it play out, im just cerious what could be causeing it. Im assuming its bacteria.

With multi-focus stacks you can make (pseudo) 3D images of what's too big to be in focus. There's some free software for that. I think you can use imagej of Fiji for it

I have a quick question, how do i keep my jars healthy on really hot days? where even the inside of my house is hot. Because I know if i leave it in a dark yet cool room, the plants won’t grow, and if i put them in a room with sunlight, it’ll just cook them…so how do i get around this?
