Yes, this song is a big bridge between the 80s and 90s. The main sample from the early/mid 80s, Hammer getting his start in the late 80s, and then this song coming out at the beginning of the 90s and stretching its influence going forward.

There was a song by Snap! Called Power that took Hip Hop to Europe and Pop Stations. There has always been "Dance Rap". That was actually the earliest form (Breakdancing is one of the cores of hip hop). Mc Hammer was a FEARED man. He had mad respect...

MC HAMMER was originally from Oakland. He was the best dancer in local clubs and was getting noticed. By sheer force of will he made it to the top and dropped this rap song he spliced together with some producer. The rest is history. He came out with one more album and dropped out of the music scene pretty much. 1O years later he was bankrupt rumored to have gone through 30 million in bad investments business failures mansions etc NOBODY can say he wasn't generous and a good soul. His attempted comeback fizzled.

Stanley Burrell aka MC Hammer aka Hammer from Oakland California. Got his nickname from Oakland A's owner Charlie O'Finley who thought the young bat boy for the A's looked like legendary ball player Hank "The Hammer" Aaron. Stanley would later try his hand at rap. Using Rick James' "Superfreak", he created a storm with this song in 1990. He became a sensation and even on the soundtrack for Addam's Family movie. He had a Saturday morning cartoon called Hammerman. He received hate from hard rappers like Ice Cube, Snoop Dog, etc for his pop fun rap style and videos. He then changed his moniker to Hammer and shot a video he would like to forget Pumps and a Bumps! Stanley had the biggest financial fall from grace losing nearly all his money, filing for bankruptcy because of bad business decisions and he giving anyone from Oakland a job. Stanley is still married to his high school sweetheart of over 35 years, lives in Tracy Ca. He still performs and manages young rap groups and is a investor in many tech companies. He is truly a lovely man.

This type of music is either iconic or cheesy to you depending on if you can appreciate music from other decades and the history of hip hop, and how it evolved over a decade of changes and different lyrical styles. It was popular, when I was in the clubs at the time. Either way, MC Hammer was a pioneer and put his stamp on the evolution of making hip hop popular in the mainstream, like it is today, and defining it as its own genre of music v/s straight out styles of what's considered American rap (and not hip hop).

I don't know if you remember this song by Snap! Called "I've got the power" that was the song that took hip hop to Europe. I was born on a military base in Germany and that's one of the songs I remember the most. This song got international attention too, but Snap! I've got the power was the Kickstarter for Hip Hop in Europe

A friend in his 60s immigrated from Iran sometimes wears the traditional Persian pant-baggy thighs & tight from the knee down. His nickname: Hammertime. :)

When everyone was doing the moonwalk, I was doing the typewriter. I knew how to do every dance move. They called me JJ Hammer. that was when I was about 11 years old.

Actually, the song came out on January 13, 1990, just right after the end of the 80's.

Those pants are called harem (like Jasmine and Aladdin in the 1990 Disney movie) pants, but when I was in school they just called them hammer pants. Popular with the basketball players in junior high and high school. Yeah, a bunch of tall dudes in those pants, thank goodness that fad left the building.

Released in 1990...gigantic hit back then, and he made MILLIONS(!) from this song. Also those pants were known as "parachute pants". Was played at all events...dances, weddings, et. al. !!

This was early 90's. The spandex was late 80's, the big pants were 1990. I had two, but it was an entire outfit. A mustard color, and a two tones black/purple. The obesity rate was not as high back then because people danced a LOT.

Definitely spawned the balloon pants craze. Oh well… at least he wasn’t wearing leg warmers and feathered roach clips in his hair. 🤣. The 80’s WERE a blast! So many different genres coming in all at once. I remember that being the last decade where the U.S. had chill, even if the war was going on. IMO? BEST decade ever!!!
