That's exactly right. As a matter of fact. Being a believer in Jesus, I know I am protected. So commonly when I am witnessing to someone, I will say, "Can't touch this." Which is true. One day I was about to back out into traffic where I could not see what was coming down the road from my left and someone I could not see banged on my truck 3 times which made me quickly pull back into the driveway. I strained to see who had banged on my truck and there was nobody there.

Rick James - 'Super freak' was sampled for this... Apparently, the late Rick James heard the track & called his managers, "I thought I told you not to let any more rappers sample my music!" In 1990, Rick James sued MC Hammer for copyright infringement when Hammer sampled his song “Super Freak” in Hammer's all time greatest hit “Can't Touch This” without permission. Ironically, James won his first and only Grammy off of “Can't Touch This,” due to the sample of “Super Freak” the song contained.

Everybody was trying to do the "Hammer dance" just like the decade before we were trying to moonwalk. The Harem pants were a big deal....for a short time. This was 89/90 I think more 1990. @@jackmandu No, y'all--parachute pants were made out of material that resembled parachute silk, and they weren't baggy! They had decorative zippers on them. I had 2 pairs: black and red. Parachute pants antedated harem pants. However, when they came out, I bought a black pair of them, too! My younger sister bought a yellow pair of Aladdin or harem pants just a few years ago, believe it or not, & we had great fun watching her do MC Hammer's sideways steps while wearing them.

Baggy pants have been worn throught history, and still are, I mean every day we have to look at the boxers of an aggravating number of adolescent boys wearing sagging jeans. Those are not too different. The term "harem" does come from the ancient middle east, but not exclusively Persia. (Sorry, history nerd here) Lots of pants were baggy because zippers etc did not exist. The reason even boys wore dresses until they were toilet trained was because it was easier to change diapers that way. So if you see a photo of your great grandpa or whoever in a dress, they were not toilet trained when the photo was taken. Now of course we have zippers, snaps and other closures that make dealing with pants easier. In the ancient middle east you could just fold and hem some fabric to make baggy pants, but women still wore dresses. The idea of harem pants on women is a Hollywood movie adaptation.

This video debuted in 1990, I think in April. It came off of the success of his debut album, Let's Get It Started (1988). This was the first single off of "Please Hammer Don't Hurt Em'". At the time, his goal wasn't to just be a well known rapper. He wasn't out for street cred. He was a pastor in an Oakland, CA church who loved to dance and was a pretty good rapper. His goal was to be like his favorite artist growing up, James Brown. At the time, artists like Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, LL Cool J and Ice-T called him a sell out for doing commercials, movies, cartoons and TV shows. Now you find so many of them doing the exact same thing. But, many have never let it go that MC Hammer wanted to be a great entertainer, not just a rapper. And to this day, Hammer puts on an amazing show in concert. (And yes, he still performs to this day). He has 4 multi-platinum selling albums. ( 2 Legit 2 Quit and The Funky Headhunter the other two) The rest of his stuff has been independent and not sold nearly as well because he was looked at as lame because he wasn't "gangsta". (Of which is another 4-5 albums worth of content). But, in Oakland and San Francisco, he is still very loved for the good things he did for the community and so if you talk shit about Hammer in that area, it is still fighting words to this day for a lot of people. But, Hammer himself....is one of the nice guys. He never wanted to be a gangsta. He wanted to be a great entertainer. When one realizes this aspect, it helps to grow much more appreciation for what he did and the barriers he broke in being the first rap artist to get commercials for KFC and Pepsi and write a song for a mainstream movie (Addams Family - Addams Family Grove is the song). He won many MTV and AMA awards and honestly deserves way better than he has gotten. He should be in the Hall of Fame, looked at as a Legend who broke down doors. Many still only see him as a time capsule to an era they want to forget. Something to joke about. And it is sad.

This song took over the United States. Pepsi commercials followed. MC Hammer had an enormous "Posse," that traveled with him. He was a good guy and blew all his cash supporting everyone around him. This song and his dancing is just damn fun. He was a super positive guy, then he changed years later to try and be hard like other "Gangster," rappers and it just didnt work. I heard some some humming and quietly singing when I glanced over, said, “Hey, you’re you!” He smiled and said “Hey, you’re right.” Told him to have a great day and went about my business. As I understand, he was a minister in the area at the time. Not certain if minister is the correct term, apologies if I’m wrong, just not familiar with the religious titles.

I remember the night this premiered on Mtv, I was 11 and it began to be played in every workout session that existed in the early 90s.

The song sampled Rick James’ “Super Freak.” I don’t recall seeing the MC Hammer harem pants outside of this video, but a lot of ladies wore bike pants at the time.

The is was one of my favorite cassette tape singles. I remember in grade school we ALL started wearing some form of the hammer pants. I was a 4ft tall pimp back then

When MC did his Melbourne tour I was in a cafe and him and a few of his crew came in . They were carrying on about how half their wardrobe didn't turn up. So I cut in and suggested a mate of mine , to whip up some out fits . Collin from Dudes in Barkley st St Kilda Barstard , never offered any free tickets . . Lol

this is one of my all-time favorite videos. great beat! LOVE the dancing! the genie pants were AWESOME! more than that though, i always liked mc hammer because he always appreciated his good fortune and he always stressed that the world could be your's if you were willing to work hard and make the most of your talents. hard work = good results/good life! nobody ever said it better than he did. 200 years from now, his wisdom will still be appreciated! i like watching your reactions to artists in the 90's. i lived through the 90's, but i took it for granted. i didn't realize what a special time it was. sure wish i could go back and visit it again.......even for a day. be well.

I love that this rap song is positive. No "N" words, cussing, drugs or gangs. There is no racial slurs in this video either. Its about dancing and doing better in your life. MC Hammer took a wrong road when he was younger, he changed is actions, took a different path and made it to stardom. That was when this song and video came out. Its nice to see you having fun with this one and recognizing it for what it is, a feel good song. I loved watching your reaction.

When this first came out, we were camping. My boyfriend pretended to take a swig of Vodka while this song was playing @ 7:30 am. A couple stopped (looking for a place to camp) and said "oh, this is the place for us".

YES! You can find those pants today. They’re called “harem pants” (“Hammer pants” back in the day), and there was actually a trend for them (for women) in the latter 2010s. I even made my own pair.

There was a while there that when a person died, they would play this song for confirmation, cause you have to be dead if you dont move to this song.
