i disagree, for the fact that larry and magic were at the end of their careers… if those 2 were in their prime it’d be the best team… but the 2012 team could’ve beaten them. part of the reason “the dream team” dominated was because they were just that much bigger and stronger than their opponents… i know them is all opinion based… so there is no right answer, but my opinion is probably right lol

@@mikehunt368 I disagree with that because every single person on the dream team minus Christian Laettner is in the HOF. The 2012 team had lesser talents such as Tyson Chandler, Kevin Love right around when he regressed, Deron Williams on the downhill slope, Iguodala. And if you are making the Magic Bird past their prime argument, then I will counter with Harden, Westbrook, and AD were all before their prime, and Kobe was past his prime. I don’t think prime Lebron Melo CP3 and Durant are enough to make the 2012 team better. But like you said it’s all opinions and you’re entitled to yours!

Yeah, being a kid watching this was super fun. It was like watching a Harlem Globetrotters game. they were so incredibly dominant it’s was like watching superheroes playing against normal people.

There was so much respect for that team, that all the teams they played were just excited to be on the same court as them. The opposing teams were ecstatic to take pics with them, get their autographs, etc. It was amazing how this dream team dazzled everyone who saw them play. They dominated the attention of those games that year and it was great!!!

The amazing thing about the Dream Team wasn't just about the insane amount of talent on the court, but that all of these guys - a couple of whom were intense professional rivals - played THAT well together :) Especially Johnson and Bird. Those two were practically at each other's throats in the NBA, but they played in the Olympics like they played together for decades :D

A lot of that had to do with having fought so many battles against each other, and their uber copetative nature was tamed by having won every conceivable award and their careers coming to a close. In BIRD’s case, he had already retired. At this point, they had so much respect for one another, and they knew it was time to pass the torch to MJ. They all knew the world was watching, and they all exemplified professionalism. 😊

You should watch the documentary on the Dream Team. The way that it all came together, what their experiences in Barcelona were etc. It is really compelling TV. They lost one game that summer. First practice vs the college all stars.

@@theoneandonlysctbonecrushe6996 Chuck already knew Michael bought in to the idea of working hard as a team to win, regardless of the opponent. He needed the rest of the team to learn the lesson by being humbled. He knew Michael wouldn't let the team down thus undermining the lesson.

Well, not only were they an outstanding group of players - they had the motivation... policy had forced them to sit on the sidelines and watch as "National" teams of other nations outplayed the US teams made up entirely of college players. They had a statement to make, and they were burning to make it. For many of the other players in the world - it was their first opportunity to see some of their heroes on the court in person. Clearly many of them were in awe of what these guys could do on the court.

It took forever for the US to finally allow our professionals to compete against the world's professionals at the Olympics, and the world finally got to see close up and personal just how great our athletes are. The whole thing - the basketball portion of those Olympics - was a case of "OK, kiddies. This is how this game is played", and it was a joy to watch - if more than a bit embarrassing for the opponents!

For context 11 of the 12 players and 3 of 4 coaches are in the hall of fame. Some players who don't have the biggest international acclaim like john Stockton are the unquestionable goats at their position. John for example is the all time leader in steals and assists with 2nd place being nowhere in his vicinity.

Stockton is not the unquestionable goat of his position though. Most people put magic Johnson above him , and some now put Steff Curry above him.

@@patinho5589 As far as true point guards go I'd still stick with Stockton, but I see your point. Rightly or wrongly I view magic as a hybrid. Plus Stockton's stats for steals and assists are so far ahead of anyone else in history that I think its a relatively safe view to hold

Fun Fact David Robinson was actually in the Navy but was too tall for deployment at the time because he was too large for the quarters on naval ships. His nickname is the Admiral because of that. 7’1 guys aren’t built for Air Craft carriers. They made for BBall.

The Naval Academy is one of the most selective unis in the US plus each applicant needs a letter of support from his or her congressman or Senator and each senator is limited to two recommendations per year. Anyway, David Robinson is also incredibly gifted intellectually.

Robinson was drafted in 1987 but didnt get to play for San Antonio until 1989 because he had 2 more years of commitment to the Navy, which he completed. He played 3 full years at San Antonio before playing on the Dream Team.

The opposing teams players were posing for pictures with them before the games began. The Dream Team consisted of 11 pros and one collegian. All 11 of the professionals have been inducted into the Basketball Jall of Fame

Yeah, going into 1990 there was a lot of controversay about how how international teams were using, 'amateur', players who were playing year-round, year-after-year, & meanwhile the US team was all kids who'd only playing together for a few weeks or month, & were college all-stars. So, going into the 1992 Olympics, the decision was made to allow pro-athletes into the games, & the US put together a team of nothing but the cream-of-the-crop players - NBA all-stars, from differents teams & different leagues playing together.

Let me tell you something Kabir, I am a 61 year old American who lives in Illinois, and I have been a Bulls fan my whole life. And just having MJ and Pippen on the Dream Team made them a sure bet to win every game by 20 or more. Then you add Magic, Bird, Barkley, Drexler, Malone, Stockton, etc. and it was unreal. It was the best basketball team to even step on a court. And I saw an interview with players from the team where they said they knew they would crush every team they played, and they had no pressure on them. The pressure on them was zero, because they knew that even if one of them had a bad game, the other superstars would cover for them. Hell, 3 or 4 of them could have had a bad game at the same time, and they would still win by 40, they were unbeatable. It was the 1 and only actual dream team.

And that first game started out just as it should - with a pass from Magic to Bird for the bucket. And I love that moment at 7:37 with Magic yelling, "Larry!" and passing it over to the Legend for the three. It just doesn't get better than that.

The final scores don't really show how dominant this team was. They begrudged the other team every single point and it's kind of a miracle that they scored at all. It was like they were playing guys like me. Streetball players at best. This was the single greatest gathering of basketball talent ever. No other team even comes close, even now.

Our house was full and you could hear screaming from the whole street, everyone was watching our Best Goats in sports history. We were so hyped and thrilled. One of the greatest moment in sports and we will always remember where we were when they played. ❤

I worked with David Robinson’s dad back in the early 80s when David was tearing it up in High School in Northern Virginia. I knew then he was a special young man and was going to be a basketball great. This Dream Team was, without a doubt, the best team assembled.

I met David about 10 years ago. Just one of the nicest guys ever. You never really realize how tall this guy is when you watch him on TV. I'm about 5"8 on a good day. He was almost as tall as me sitting. When stood, Holly shit!

Scotty Pippen was discovered as a walk on at University of Central Arkansas. That’s also where he had a huge growth spurt- growing 7 inches in college!

I remember reading about the Toni Kukoc thing. Jordan and Pippen wanted to make Jerry Krause, the Bulls GM, look bad for drafting him. They took out their frustration towards the GM on Kukoc and Kukoc had no idea what he did to make them just go after him so hard. He did join them eventually in the NBA and helped them win their final 3 championships.

The same thing happened with hockey. The Soviets used hardened professional players while the US teams were just college kids. That's why the Miracle On Ice sent our country into paroxysms of joy in 1980, a time when America wasn't feeling good about much else. It's also where the now famous "USA USA USA" chant was born. Right after these Olympic games, the team came flying through a private hangar my uncle worked at in Birmingham, Alabama. He had his little girl with him (my cousin), and she got to say hello to the team as they got off the plane. She was maybe 4-5 years old, and her daycare just had their Olympic games that day. She showed her medal to Charles Barkley, and he bent down and showed her his gold medal and said with a smile, "That's cool, I got one like that too." At least that's how my uncle told it lol.

The Dream Team has definitely been cited as a catalyst for growing the game of basketball internationally. There are so many more European players in the NBA today and some of them are true stars.

Chuck Daley, the head coach, assembled a team of the best college players on the first day of practice. All the Dream Teamers were nonchalanting it and the college team beat them (no, there’s no video). He wanted to make a point. He even benched Jordan in that scrimmage. Point made, they never lost again and still hold the record for point differential.

He didn't play Jordan because he knew Jordan wouldn't screw around and try to show off, he had a killer instinct and would play like his life was on the line no matter the situation. Daly wanted the rest of the team to play the same way. The next day, with Jordan, they blanked the same college All Star team with the whole team playing balls to the wall. Great coaching right there.

The 1992 Olympic Team was so awesome, it was such a joy to watch them playing. They were far ahead of everyone else at this time. Never before, never again played such a perfect team at the Olympic games. Because these guys played as a team.

I remember when they were assembled. Other teams that they faced were often in awe and would watch them warm up, and then they’d ask for autographs afterwards. They were unstoppable..

I loved seeing this. It brings to mind a cousin of mine who made it a point for us to watch those games together. It's a great lifetime memory. My cousin was murdered a year later after these games. I always remember him when I see the Dream Team.

What they didn't say about the 1972 game was that it was highly controversial. The officals seemed to be, many say were, colluding to let the USSR win.

Something to note is that Magic Johnson had gone into early retirement because of contracting the HIV virus, but had still been selected to represent the US, and came out of retirement to play. At that point, neither Bird nor Jordan had committed to join the team and it was Johnson's efforts to get both to play that made it happen. There are plenty of good stories that surround this team and their efforts to win.

This is not just the best basketball team ever assembled. This is the best sports team ever assembled in the history of competitive sport. 10 of the players on this team were on the top 75 players of all time list that the NBA recently-released. Out of the other two one of them was a Hall of Famer and the other was the best college kid available.

This team influenced the world and has had an enormous effect on the popularity of basketball in Europe and other parts of the world. So much so that now a days 4 of the top 10 players in the NBA are all non American. In fact the #1 player in the NBA is from Greece. And the last 3 MVPs are all international players..

I can only remember two plays from that olypmics but I can't remember the opponents. The first was Jordon on a solo fast break being guarded by a haplass opponent. Jordon was so quick and so powerful that the defender simply stopped and stared as Air completed the dunk. The seond memory was a fast break by Scotty Pippen with Jordon trailing. There was one defender who was trying to keep up with Pippen but was having no luck. Pippen drove toward the basket but instead of taking the shot he bounced the ball off of the back board and the trailing Jordon caught the ball in mid air while flying down the middle and made a dunk shot without coming down to the floor. Amazing.

Up until that year, the US had only sent college players while all other countries were sending pros. That's when the US got the go to use pro players and Magic, Bird, and Jordan spearheaded that team. If I recall, the coach benched Jordan in a practice game against the only team to beat them behind closed doors, which were the best college players at the time. I also recall Reebok was an Olympic sponsor and everyone had to wear the Reebok track suits. MJ had most of the team signed to Nike, which was why most everyone covered the Reebok logo on those track suits with the American flag.

Great choice once again Kabir. It is always fun for me watching the younger generation learn about the Dream Team. I had just graduated high school and was only a casual basketball fan, but the Dream Team was a phenomenom that transcended sports. Americans never got over being cheated in the 1972 Olympics by the USSR as well as the other more recent defeats so there was no feeling sorry for anyone. Combine that with the high tide of good feelings after the fall of communism. It was a unique Summer.

Pick 15-20 of the best footballers who ever lived - anywhere... at any time in history... Put them together. Unite them in focus and purpose. That's what the Dream Team was to basketball. Opposing teams felt privileged simply to be the object of their wrath. P.S. Charles Barkley is one of the great characters in American sport. He's genuinely funny. He was also one of the greatest Power Forwards ever to play the game - a huge accomplishment given that he's about 5"-6" shorter than the typical PF.

You may not recognize a few of the names on the Dream Team due to your age, but google them. Literally every player on that team was a legend. It was like the NBA hall of fame in their prime came to play at the Olympics.

Hall of fame coach Chuck Daly of Detroit Pistons had an amazing strategy to deal with their egos... He made them lose. He scheduled a scrimmage against all the top college players going pro the next year (Chris Webber). He invited media for it, but had them wait outside. First he had them play a whole game with no one watching. He told college guys before, "Go at these guys like your life depends on it." Then told pros, "Go easy, get used to eachother, etc..." It worked! The college guys WON and started talking trash. Then he opened the doors to have media come in, reset score to 0 - 0, and had them start another game as if the first one never happened. Dream Team obviously destroyed them, and everyone else from then on.

Before the actual games, when the team was first put together, they played a private game against a team of college all stars...and lost. It was a deliberate act on the part of Coach Chuck Daly. It told the team, don't take anyone lightly. After that, and with that one lesson drilled into them, they were never threatened again. Most of the team could tell you, no pressure at all. It was simply go out, do your best and let the world know who the real champs were.

The 1985 Chicago Bears had the best defense ever. And they won the Super Bowl that year 42-10. Most teams they played were lucky to kick a field goal, and very few even scored 10 points on them. And they had Walter Payton and the Fridge too. Payton was a warrior, he ran for all those yards every year with mostly bad offensive lines, and he only missed 1 game in 10 years because of injury. The players today can barely go a month without getting hurt. And Payton tried to go through guys, he wanted contact, so he could run you over. And he still never got hurt.

Kabir, you have to watch the induction into the NBA Hall of Fame of the entire 1992 Dream Team. It was awesome....and Yes. It is the Best Basketball Team ever assembled. AWESOME!!!

Unless I'm mistaken, after formation of the Dream Team and winning gold, the NBA began recruiting players from the national teams of other countries. There was rare talent being drug down by sub-par teammates. Teammates who were petrified by the prospect of playing the people they admired more than nearly anyone on Earth.

One fact I always found amusing is that this US team NEVER called a timeout for any reason throughout the tournament of the Americas and the Olympics itself. Pretty remarkable.

That team had won the Olympic gold as soon as the roster was announced. Jordan, Bird, Magic and more. It was like playing NBA2K against a 3 year old, but their controller is unplugged.

The only problem with the dream team is they liked to pass maybe too much, no one wanted to be greedy. When they put their foot on the gas, no one in the world stood a chance. Most of the games went, oh its kind of close in the first period, but then the Americans would sub in players as good if not better then the starters, and no one could compete with that. That's when the landslides started happening. Other countries could try to keep it close for 20 minutes, but after that, they just got wore out.

Up until the Dream Team the United States would go send the best college players from all the different colleges around the United States and they would play against teams in the Olympics which many of them especially the Russians were professionals that had been together for over 5 to 15 years so like sending kids to play against grown men. So the United States pick some of the best players in the NBA and sent them

Interesting fact. 11 of those 12 players are in the Hall of Fame individually (they are in the HOF as a team as well). The only reason it’s not 12 is they wanted to include 1 college player and they chose forward Christian Laetner instead of Shaq because they already had two centers.

In Barcelona, the best performing player on the Dream Team was Charles Barkley. The one that fell way off expectations was, surprisingly, Michael Jordan. MJ's best came out during practice against his teammates. I think he was bored with the blowouts. He looked lazy and his jump shot was awful. Barkley saved their butts as several of the players that were taken were aging or injured. Sir Charles, as he's known, was clutch in those games.

The gold medal match from this past Olympics was an absolute trainwreck. The USA women's team were giants amongst the undersized Japanese.

I enjoy some womens sports like Soccer and Tennis, hell even softball is ok. Womens basketball just doesnt do it for me. They are so much less skilled than the men and so much of the athleticism that really makes the Mens game exciting is just completely absent. Half of them can barely bounce a ball correctly. It looks like a Jr High game lots of the time. And im talking about the WNBA.

Maybe there would have been pressure, except Bird, Jordan and Magic are three of the most clutch players ever and everyone knew there was no way anyone would beat them. I watched with my family just like I watched the Miracle on Ice in 1980. In ‘92 before every game the only question was if they would win by more than 30.

Of course they were all aware of each other as competitors. But this is like one of those hypothetical questions raised at a party. "If you could assemble the greatest team of all active NBA players, who would you pick?" Imagine being put on a team where every other member was the absolute best at their position. Imagine the joy they felt practicing. It was awesome!

Apparently the best game never seen was a scrimmage the dream team had with team Jordan vs team Johnson. Apparently is was absolutely amazing with Jordans side squeaking out the win. I wish someone had taped it.

Trust me, these dudes felt no pressure...These were the most confident athletes in the world. The real drama would've been the practice sessions: all the trash-talking from nothing but First-Ballot Hall-Of-Famers????? Trust, the world was not ready back then for the best U.S had to offer (I'm glad other countries have stepped up their game to make international basketball competitive now).

Sir Charles Barkley was one of my all time favorite players who epitomizes effort and hard work on the court. His relentless aggressive style even though far smaller than most players at his position of power forward made him one of my personal favorites.

Kabir, I don't think there was ANY doubt in the players mind that they wouldn't win. It was only a question of what the winning margin would be. That team was so strong that Charles Barkley was their 8th best player.

I can’t tell you just how exciting it was. Didn’t have to be a hoops fan, it was electric. There seemed a universal kind of understanding by most people that this was the first, and probably the last time a team as purely great as this would ever be assembled again. Only other event that ranks similar is the last year, 90 or 91’, that Tiger Woods won the US Amateur championship. His persona, his charisma was off the chart. Electric! People who never watched golf or Tiger, were watching the golf match. Amazing.

yeah, some woman was wearing a dream team shirt with his face on it and still had to be told who he was LOL. Stockton was LEGIT. on my Mt Rushmore, he and Magic hold the spot for point guards together. I couldn't possibly choose only one of them lol.
