This is a result of the utter gash recruitment policy that has essentially been forced upon the British Army. No longer is the British army portrayed as a way for young men and women to get away from rough estates, from poverty, from gangs, from crime and to essentially leave behind a life of no purpose to then become part of something more than themselves , to become part of a family maybe for the first time and to gain skills and discipline whilst serving the country. No Now the British Army is aiming the recruitment at people who have zero desire to serve and as a result, wondering why no one is joining anymore. I was in the para reg from 1997 to when I got MD’d in 2009. I am from an extremely rough state in Edinburgh and without the army I would be serving a very long prison sentence now for some horrendous violent crime no doubt as the people I was associating with and the things I was doing when I was 17 would surely have seen me on that path. The British army now in 2024 would not want me as I was then. There’s a lot of staff officers and civil servants in Whitehall who never really left university and I blame them for this current culture and also there is a distinct lack of maroon at the top, we never had these problems when General Sir Mike Jackson was god. I am a transsexual, I transitioned in 2011 and I am extremely happy. I also wouldn’t change anything about my past but recruitment for the army in particular needs to be aimed at the community I belonged to in 1997 not the one I belong to now. The enemy does not care how offended a person is on Twitter or what their preferred pronouns are. Also please bin Capita , they are about as much use as a chocolate kettle. Sorry for the long post. I just feel a bit passionate about this. Cheers 🍻

I fully understand that the military is trying to make basic training and military service more appealing and no one likes being shouted at but training in the military is not simply preparing someone to do a job. Soldiering is a very stressful occupation, particularly in a combat situation and one of the reasons for putting recruits under stress is to get them used to reacting and carrying out orders in highly stressful environments. Failure to do so correctly can get people killed, an outcome that is not present in any civilian role and no military commander will have time in a combat situation to ask and persuade reluctant soldiers to put their lives on the line. It is on these occasions when training and discipline come into the picture. These, plus the ability to react to orders when all hell is breaking loose is what makes an effective soldier. These traits will NOT be developed or inculcated by soft words and empathy.

We don't shout at our recruits. It's counterproductive. In training, in peace, you build the foundation on which the enlistees and officers need to operate in a conflict or war. There must be trust and flexibility between all levels and from the top to the lowest level in a war. We build this during their training. Does it mean they become soft or less capable?! Nope! On the contrary, the soldiers become confident, take the initiative, show respect for their leaders, and trust their orders.

HMS Raleigh 1998. No sleep whatsoever, around 4 hours a night. Kit musters. We messed up for some reason, they made us do a kit muster in the rain, beds outside middle of the night. Stressed out beyond belief. One lad threatened suicide if they wouldn’t let him leave. Lads offered certain instructor’s out with fists that sort of thing. It was like they took a load of lads from Borstal plonked them all together. Funny looking back, didn’t think anything of it being humiliated as a 16 year old from instructors who got off being absolute twats. Strict and I mean very strict. No smart phones, or mobiles so you can imagine the shite that went on lol. I guess they could get away with that sort of thing back then. If you were lucky you would get to spend 1 hour sat in the canoe for good behaviour 😉.

Rejoined as a reserve in 2017 and had to do their basic next to no shouting but bollockings when applicable. There's a time to get shouty and a time to teach good instructors have a mix of both.

My Cpl had toured Iraq, toured Afghan Op Herrick, I knew he knew what he was doing and he was an extremely good instructor like the other 3 section commanders. How on earth are you going to survive in a warzone if you can't even pass training! Training is a controlled environment and yes you can pull out of PT or an exercise and go and sit on the jack wagon but what are you going to do when you aren't in a controlled environment, the enemy are not going to give a toss. Most of the enemy don't have rules of engagement, they don't subscribe to the geneva convention they do what they like. Oh and let's say another thing, these poorly trained snowflakes will be to the left and right of you in this warzone, would you trust them there? Would you trust them to carry your ass 300m to save your life if they can't even pass out of training because they didn't like being shouted at, or they didn't have 8hr sleep the night before? Training is supposed to be hard it's supposed to be difficult, you aren't supposed to be having a jolly, it calms down more when you get to regiment when you have earned the right to have it more relaxed, when you have proved you can get through training. I really do hope the elite units (para's, ghurkas, royal marines) do not subscribe to this nonsense. Sometimes, you have to really have a look at what job you're going into, if you're going Infantry you need it to be tough, the other Remfs can do what they like and they already had it cushty anyway.

The Swedish military emphasizes a more supportive training environment. While discipline and rigor are still crucial, the methods tend to be less confrontational and more focused on teamwork and individual development. Shouting and aggressive behaviour by instructors are less common, as Swedish military training places a higher value on mutual respect and professional development. Screaming should be used correctly. Just screaming for the sake of it, as the Americans sometimes do, seems kind of ridiculous. It should be, as we say in Sweden, "lagom," meaning not too much or too little. But I mean, it is the military, not ballerina practice.🤣So being able to perform under stress and pressure is crucial.

Yes, it's widely known that the SF don't shout at people going for selection or once in the regiment. That's because their philosophy is that they want people who can self motivate. Bear in mind when you're talking about SF soldiers they are already at an extremely high standard even before they can get chosen to go on selection and they have already been in the military more than 2years. When you've just rocked up recruits need that short sharp wake up call to get their arse in gear, which comes from shouting.
