Richmond is the Capitol of Virginia. Washington D.C. is north of Richmond. The "rich men" are the politicians there who pass the legislation that we all live under.

As a retired firefighter in the USA, I will add this. In the USA, every labor day, Firefighters across the US and Canada go to the streets to ask for money to donate to the fight for muscular dystrophy. It's called "Fill the Boot". A firefighters boot is held out so money can be deposited in it to be counted and turned in later. During my career of 33 years, I can tell you that the people who look like they need every cent that they have, always empty their pockets, car consoles, or any other place they collect money, and throw it in the boot. And any car that is definitely a car of the upper class, keeps their window closed and look straight ahead to avoid eye contact! And then drive away without offering up a cent. Everyday people take care of their own.

I did a lot of charity work with animals. Our local shelter etc., we typically saw the opposite. It's those that are better off that donate and those in the lower income class not so much. But, I understand that. I don't want anyone donating if they cannot do it. I'll donate to most kids charities also. I'm retired, fixed income so I'm more careful these days. I will always give to the local kid's charities and we have some good ones here.

I know what you mean as I live in an area with a lot of Tesla drivers with rolled up windows, while me in my 20 yr old Scion box are handing out whatever I have to almost anyone asking at a traffic light. My favorite is putting cash in your boots or toys in the toys for tots boxes by the Marines over at Camp Pendelton. I may not always receive kindness from others but really giving kindness to others is better for my soul.

When people have to spend every waking minute working to just get by, it makes it damned hard to even think about the "pursuit of happiness". The "New World Order" is doing the working class absolutely no favors. Oliver Anthony is saying exactly what the majority of the world is thinking. Great reaction.

The rich have been stealing from the lower and middle class in America for decades. Ever since the decline of the labor movement. No more pensions, expensive medical care, laying off tons of workers even though they are making a profit because their already-rich shareholders want even more of a return, it never ends. The greedy always want more. They are sick. "For the love of money is the root of all evil..." But the worst thing about it is the lies that some people believe and keep electing the same people. The lies that immigrants, or poor people, are the reason they are doing worse. When in reality it is the laws and loopholes that the billionaires pay lobbyists to bribe politicians to enact. When a large corporation loses too much money the government gives them taxpayer money but when the taxpayers lose too much money we are on our own. Tax the billionaires, regulate corporations, go to single payer healthcare, and give us back our money and our quality of life. On one side you have Jeff Bezos wanting to build rocket ships and on the other side you have hundreds of millions of hard-working Americans who want nothing more than a decent life.

Do we want the old USA back? How "old" do we want to go? Back to the days when gay men were tortured and beaten to death and tied to fences? (Yes, it happened, and not 100 years ago either. This was in the 1990s.) Women being the property of their husbands? Black folk getting lynched for daring to smile at a white person? Jim Crow? Slavery? Witch burnings? What part of the "old" USA are you feeling nostalgic for?

This song went straight to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 about four days after release. Craziest thing is that Oliver Anthony is the first person to achieve such a feat with no promotion or previous work. This song, borne of a bout with depression (Anthony's own words), is a once-in-a-lifetime anthem for not just us here in America, but around the world who are going through the same thing we are.

I think you might find it interesting that he and his wife just had their first child (a son :-) ) also. He has turned down millions of dollars of offers.... he wants to control what happens to his music. He also cancelled a concert when he found out how much the venue was going to charge people to come to his concert. He is still trying to figure out all this fame himself.... he has lived a life of struggle and has a heart for those who also struggle in this life. I truly do not think he and his wife will forget where they came from and will just appreciate whatever comes their way. Like he says- it was NEVER his dream to become famous or sing in big concerts. He loves people and the simple life

“I Want to go Home” and “90 Some Chevy” are both worth reacting to. Completely different vibes, with the first one similar to “Rich Men...” in the power of the message, and the second one is more of a love song. There are a bunch of other songs too and he has a channel on YT. He’s putting it all out himself and refusing to sign with big labels. Turned down $8million right after this song went viral, and is insisting on affordable pricing for his concert tickets. He’s awesome!

Which one of y’all wanna give ‘em the run down on Oliver? Let’s see, before this video came out, he’d never properly recorded anything ever, outside of his using a crappy phone. He never had an intention to “be a singer” in the way one who does, usually seeks fame and fortune. He was frustrated, 30 days sober from alcohol and just frustrated with the state of things here in America, and in the greater world at large. A man who was his friend and also worked on a channel for KZfaq out of Virginia, showcases local Virginian/Appalachian musicians. He approached Anthony wanting to showcase him as well, and feeling like there was something special about Oliver. Made this video in his backyard, put it out, and no kidding, the views were in the millions within days. Oliver, whose real name is Chris (Oliver was his grandpas name so he uses it in honor of him) said he hoped maybe a few thousand would hear his song. He and we could never envision his stratospheric rise, in 5 days. He’s been on Joe rogan since and that was his introduction to the world . He’s married with children and a pregnant wife. About three days after it came out, he did a show at a farmers market, where just the week before 10-20 people came to see him. After the song, thousands came out, he put on a free show.he’s turned down every record/hollyweird offer. It wasnt about the money, but thanks to that initial friend with the Virginia channel, he made bank. It was such a moment being in the zeitgeist watching this all go down. The world watched. The world cried. And here we are.

Beesleys, Timestamp 3:48-3:55, THAT'S the 1st Amendment to the US Constitution. If ever you come here, you need to get accustomed to it because REAL free speech becomes extremely heated and contentious sometimes. When we say there is free speech in America, we mean it, and we'll enforce it at the end of a gun barrel if necessary. He's just an impoverished peon from backwoods nowhere USA with a voice but if the Government went after him and people like him, that Government will be confronted with an army over 100MM strong with better firearms and more ammunition than our military has. If they didn't, you wouldn't have people like this speaking truth to power. And this is why we say, the 2nd Amendment defends the 1st Amendment.

I've seen people reacting to this video from the Middle East, India, New Zealand, Africa and most are flabbergasted, but MANY of them cry and say that they are going through the very same problems as we are, so you weren't far off, "soon-to-be Mrs. Beesley". BTW, I'm from America and I share all the same feelings as the others who've reacted to it. And, as said elsewhere, Richmond is a city in Virginia, just south of Washington, D.C. ... the source of political power in the States ... where the White House (and the President lives) and Congress are located, as well as where ALL politicians make/pass laws that "Control" the rest of the country to a great extent. Check out i want to go home and 90 some chevy! Oliver Anthony is such an amazing guy. He didnt want fortune and fame. He just wanted his music to be heard. He turned down millions and millions of dollars in record label deals because he doesnt want to be controlled and manipulated like 95% of musicians on labels are. He was a factory worker for several years, working hard for terrible pay, coming home and drowning his pain in drugs and alcohol. Then he pleaded with god to help him get sober and let his music be heard. Weeks later this song was released and it exploded because it came from the soul and everyone across the world can feel it.

I believe one of his friends heard the song and said that he had equipment to record it and they just did it for themselves. It turned into an anthem here in the states. I think you guys should do more music reactions

Great reaction! I had a debate one day with a very politically-minded individual at work. I am a deeply conservative (and very well-educated) young American living and working in the Silicon Valley (in the San Francisco Bay Area -- one of the most liberal parts of America). They kind of generalized me as a "typical conservative" -- which is stereotyped by the media. Yet, my story is the antithesis of the stereotype. I'm the son from a military family. Like my dad, I worked my way through university and graduate school. I did well in school and earn actual ACADEMIC scholarships -- but I paid the rest of my tuition. Despite working throughout high school and college, I also spent enormous numbers of hours volunteering with various mostly-minority communities to help them in school and the tedious and often confusing college application process. I've spent much of my free time traveling abroad in third world countries to help with everything from helping vaccinate indigenous communities (at risk from disease) to helping with infrastructure projects to simply digging water wells for tribal groups. I've actually housed illegal immigrants in my home -- those who had collapsed from exhaustion, hunger and thirst. I've spent enough money helping others that I actually went hungry doing so. Yet, in all of this, I am still a deeply conservative person. This is because I believe that many of the liberals in my country are liberals in idea only -- and fail at policy or actually practicing what they preach. In that debate with a co-worker, they got to the point of mocking me. So, I told them my story. After laughing it away, they said that I was merely trying to "sound like a liberal." However, I pointed out that conservativism in the United States used to be called "classical liberalism." It was the conservatives who outlawed slavery, provided jobs and outlawed discrimination. It was the conservatives who built policies that worked for the most people. The stereotype of racism, bigotry and hate is just that -- a silly stereotype and trope. Songs like this ring true. The politicians -- often funded by big business board rooms (including Silicon Valley corporations) -- are often "say'ers" but not "doers." It's all about profit margins. Capitalism works -- but politicians find ways to skirt the laws and shift jobs to Asia and other third world nations that will save money by skirting environmental and work safety laws. This is why people voted for Trump in 2016. It's why tens of millions might vote for him again in 2024. He's certainly a flawed man; however, he pointed out these hypocrisies on the campaign trail and in the White House. Trump still isn't my first (or even tenth) choice for president. However, the status quo is broken. I'd vote for anyone who is competent enough to fix the status quo.

As a tax preparer in U.S. you learn a lot about people from their charitable donations deductions. I've seen a teacher making $60,000 with $6k donations and a business owner making $600,000 with $600 donations. True story.

Richmond Virginia is a big city in Virginia and South of Washington DC ! The Rich Men He’s referring to in the song is the Washington DC politicians who’s running our country in the ground by getting richer off the job while the working class gets poorer. The political class he’s talking about is congressmen, Senators, and even the White House using their positions to get filthy rich while the working class Americans aren’t being taken care of. That’s what the whole song is about is the forgotten men & women of the working class.

Richmond is the capital of Virginia and was the capital of the rebellion during the US Civil War. Oliver Anthony is from southwestern Virginia, thus his perspective of Washington, DC being north of Richmond by about 100 miles. From a historical perspective, many of the major battles of the US Civil War took place between Washington DC and Richmond. The irony about this song is that both sides tried to claim this as their anthem, when Oliver Anthony said repeatedly that this song was non-partisan saying both sides suck. While I don’t agree with 100% of his points, he isn’t wrong on his overall point.

I genuinely love your optimism, and yes, there are many problems we could ameliorate, but rich people simply dumping money at social issues -- whether voluntarily or through taxation -- is not the cure-all that we all like to think.

He dropped two more original song right after this song went viral. Washington DC is north of Richmond, New York is north of Richmond. He is an independent song writer/singer, he turned down 8 million dollar music contract. He had troubles in the past with alcohol, mental health, and work injuries. Americans pay some of the highest taxes in the world and receive the least benefits from the government. As the worlds police force the American people pay for the world safety with blood and sacrifice. To be far to American celebrates they do give millions to charities. Keanu Reese was give his last dollar to the needy in past years. Charities in the USA are a scam. Thanks so much for your reaction, you are some of the most beautiful people inside and out, in today’s world.

His song hits home for me here in England .. coming from a council estate working class background im seeing lots of families choosing to either put their heating on or get their food shop in .. im seeing people go without the basic things and they are working also .. its not right or fair while our goverment is earning thousands just for sitting and attending discussions and still thinking they deserve their wages to be raised while they themselves dodge paying their taxes but if we did that for even the tinest amount we would be arrested. Im starting to hate my country .. not the people but everything else. Cant afford to get married cant afford to start a family so i earn money just to keep a roof over my head and that roof is a 1 bedroom flat that keeps on rising in price and is not worth it and then that money is gone. What type of life is this and who would want it ?

Actually, he didn't have the equipment. A local radio station loaned him the microphone and shot the video out on his property with a "real" camera. I put "real" in quotes because, up until the station loaned him the mic and shot the video with an actual professional grade camera, Oliver had been recording his songs on nothing but his cell phone.
