Thanks again for reacting to this! As Americans, we really do love our flag. In many schools, you have the American and state flag outside AND an American flag inside of every classroom. Many students still start their days or their weeks with the "Pledge of Allegiance" (although it isn't mandatory). It isn't that we think that America is perfect (far from it). However, we are a nation of immigrants. Most of our ancestors (and even many of us) left their homelands to come to this nation that is ever-seeking to be a "more perfect union." No matter if you're a Republican or Democrat, conserative, moderate or liberal, most Americans believe in collective liberty. We believe that our freedoms are innate -- something that we are born with and the Constitution is created to solidify this -- placing limits on the national government and its politicians from infringing on those liberties.

Well said! And, when I was in school, the Pledge of Allegiance was definitely mandatory. Public school. I remember one kid getting sent to the principals office for not putting his hand over his heart after being told to. We really really really do love our flag. I think it’s partly because most of us have some military family, or military history, or I have come here, seeking a better life. As a result, that flag means a hell of a lot. It’s something people fight for, people, die for, and people leave their homes to seek. As an American, I just want all of those people to get what they deserve. The last thing I want is for someone to come from a war, torn country, and experience anything less than freedom

Not only does the flag have such a strong meaning behind it with that story. The colors of the flag have meaning: Red: Strength and valor,White: Purity and innocence, Blue: Vigilance, perseverance, and justice. This story is a little exaggerated, but 90% true. This conflict happened during the war of 1812. It was only 16 British ships at Fort McHenry, Baltimore Maryland. British were also fighting in France against Napoleon. There were no women and children there because it was a military fort guarding Baltimore Harbor. Only 4 Colonist were killed during the shelling. Francis Scott Key was there to negotiate the release of one Doctor. We still hold this as the birth of American Patriotism.

I’d say this version of the story is only like 10% true. Other than that Key was inspired to write the song after observing the flag following the bombardment of fort McHenry, pretty much all the rest is pure fiction. No hundreds of ships, no ultimatum regarding the flag, no piles of bodies supporting the flag (in fact only 4 deaths in the fort at all).

Agreed with Adam. Barely any of this is historically accurate. Adding to the glaring issues that he pointed out, there was also no cargo hold full of prisoners for Key to relate the happening of the battle to (which he couldn't even see from where he was; he only saw the "red glare" in the sky). The only woman at Fort McHenry was the wife of the commander.

In the theater before the movie starts, all stand for the National Anthem. The story about the Anthem i dont think many are aware of. It was actually a poem with several verses and later music was added as it became our Nation Anthem. If you want to hear in my opinion, the best rendition was when Whitney Houston sang it at the openning of the super bowl in 1992 during Desert Storm.

I remember a kid at my (public) school who was suspended for refusing to say the "under God" part of the pledge, even though it wasn't in the original pledge (it was added shortly before you started going to school, actually). Still boggles my mind.

I can't bring myself to open it yet. I still find it hard to believe he died within a few weeks of sending it to me. All 7 brothers are gone now. Just the 4 girls. Me being the oldest. Two things I noticed that I didn't catch the first time you reacted to this. First the narrator says "the colonies and mother Country". This battle was in 1814, The United States had been a free and independent Country for 38yrs by that point. Second; He calls the fort Fort Henry. It's Fort McHenry. (edit) A statement about talking to prisoners was in error and removed..

I was just about to comment about the video having the wrong name for the fort when I saw your comment. It is indeed McHenry. Another minor mistake they made was in he second line of the song. It should be "What so proudly we "hailed".......... The lyrics on the screen had the word as "held", although it does sound like the singer actually sings the correct word.

You are partly right and partly wrong. Key was not aboard a British prison ship during the bombardment, but he was aboard a British troopship anchored 4 miles away. He had been sent to try to negotiate the release of one civilian captive and was detained when the bombardment started. His vantage point to see what was going on, especially during the night, was certainly less than ideal but when dawn broke he was able to see that the flag was still flying over the fort and penned his poem. It's a little unclear, but I don't believe he ever set foot in the fort in the aftermath. Some propaganda, some truth.

As a wounded Army veteran, I prefer the true story. And the truth is that we were smarter and tougher than the british, and we had the high ground. The bombardment lasted for 27 HOURS. We did not sit there overnight dying holding the flag. We were too busy shooting back. We fought, as warriors, in glory. We fought so effectively that Only 4 Americans died at the battle for Fort McHenry. There were no women or children, because we no American warrior would put their family in harms way like that. The song is about the fresh clean new flag that we raised that morning, as a big middle finger to the British as they sailed away. This was the glorious Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812.

I just wish this video wasn’t the one going viral instead of the real history. This one is so ridiculously exaggerated as to be mostly myth rather than history but it’s gotten so widespread that many people think it’s the actual history and never bother to look up the real history that it’s based on. There is a kernel of truth behind this story as Francis Scott Key did write the lyrics after observing the flag following the bombardment of Fort McHenry. But the accuracy doesn’t go much beyond that. The British didn’t have hundreds of ships attacking the fort, they had 19. The fort didn’t have lots of women and children inside, it was primarily a military structure and women and children would have been mostly in the city of Baltimore instead. The British didn’t issue an ultimatum regarding the flag, though taking the fort was a critical strategic point that was necessary to either side to have a chance at winning the war. There weren’t piles of bodies supporting the flag, in fact the ships couldn’t get close enough in the harbor due to some defenses that had been set up and so were unable to do much damage, in fact only 4 men inside the fort were killed at all. The flag that Frances Scott Key saw in the morning also likely wasn’t even the one flying through the night, they usually raised an oversized flag in the morning for reveille in place of a smaller battle flag flying overnight.

I always flinch a bit when I see the British flag at some of your ceremonies (thinking of the Queen's funeral etc) and the flag is put onto the ground - I get that evidently that is a form of respect - but in the same situation - while the flag carrier may bow his head - and any other flags ie: State, may be lowered - none especially the American flag would ever be placed on the ground. Even if you are flying the flag at your home and it gets tattered and worn out - you NEVER just throw it in the garbage - you can either give it to the American Legion or other military to dispose of properly which is burning in a respectful way - or yes you can do yourself but again, in a very respectful way.

Most Americans were not taught the reason/purpose behind the lyrics of The Star Spangled Banner. We were taught it and memorized it, but did not know the story behind it. I am 70, and we used to sing it at school and recite The Pledge of Allegiance. I always knew it was wrong to ever let it touch the ground, and saw movies with scenes depicting efforts to keep it off the ground. For pride, it was assumed. After seeing this, I now understand why The Flag to be kept flying and off the ground is so important - its more than just patriotic pride - its the notion that if allowed to fall to the ground is like capitulating to personal surrender of the liberties and freedoms we enjoy as Americans. Not perfect, because people are not perfect, but we continually strive to maintain those ideals for everyone. Appreciate your review.

No one died holding up the flag, and there was no cargo hold full of prisoners for Key to relate the happenings of the battle to. The British made no ultimatum, and didn't even mention the flag. We have actual eyewitness accounts of this, and the story in the video is almost completely made up, as I said. No one should be okay with historical revisionism, especially on this scale. The Star Spangled Banner became the official national anthem in the early 1930s. There were several other songs in competition before then. The event at Baltimore and Fort McHenry did happen. The fort did not fall, there were 4 casualties. The official flag was raised in the morning which did signal the fort had not fallen. Key wrote a poem set to music later.

Thus is why we don’t allow the flag to touch the ground and it must be lit up if flown at night, so it is always visible. Additionally, when the flag is removed from a pole, casket of a vet, etc there are distinct folds to represent very specific things. Also, our MIA/POW tables have reasons and positions for everything on them. We taught our Girl Scout Troop what they are, how to properly fold the flag and even though it was a troop of 2nd & 3rd graders to start, they were taught this and a flag ceremony was a part of every “formal” activity we had. Glad you enjoyed learning a bit of our heritage and shared your thoughts on it

The Star-Spangled Banner, or the Great Garrison Flag, was the garrison flag that flew over Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor during the naval portion of the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812. It is on exhibit at the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution. Seeing the flag flying over Fort McHenry on the morning of September 14, 1814, after the battle ended, Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the poem "Defence of Fort M'Henry". These words were written by Key and set to the tune of "To Anacreon in Heaven", a popular song at the time, by John Stafford Smith. In 1931 the song became the national anthem of the United States.

This video has many historical inaccuracies. It is unfortunate that it is making the rounds of KZfaq reaction videos.

Unfortunately, it's a great feel good video, but it bares no real truth. I will be called anti-American for saying this because in today's America facts have no real bearing on anything. If people see it on KZfaq it's taken as fact. It only takes a few minutes to look this battle up to find out the truth but that's too much work for people today and doesn't make for a great story. I love America and am as patriotic about the flag as everyone else. I also hold the truth in just as high regard. I don't need history to be twisted to make myself feel better.

@@Timbothruster-fh3cw I can tell you point by point the errors in this video. First, it was fort McHenry not fort Henry. The revolutionary War had been over for 31 years, we weren't colonies anymore. Francis Scott Key wasn't there to free all the prisoners on a 1 to 1 basis. He went there to negotiate the release of a single man. An elderly rich doctor named Dr. William Beanes. Scott Key never went into the hold of the prisoner ship and never talked directly to any prisoners. The negotiations were aboard the H.M.S. Tonnant a ship of the line, not a prison ship. They were also aboard the H.M.S. Surprise which was only built 2 years before in 1812. It did not become a prison ship until 1822. Well after the battle of Baltimore and the war. Francis Scott Key was not aboard a British ship the night of the bombardment, they were on an American truce ship lashed to the British ships. The one prisoner they negotiated for release, Dr. William Beanes, had already been released and was with them aboard the American truce ship that night. The entire British war fleet was not there and it was not hundreds of warships. It was about 20 ships and they weren't all gunboats. Most were troop transports because they brought some 5,000 to 7,000 landing troops to land and march on Baltimore while a separate landing would assault and capture fort McHenry. There were no women or children there. The only woman who died was bringing the men food. Some say she was the wife of an officer. I'm not sure, I've never looked more into that claim. They would never have told Francis Scott Key their plans to level the fort. The British had no plans to level the fort. They wanted to capture it. The British sent out landings of soldiers to attack and capture it. There was more to the battle in the days before that night than just bombing the fort. The entire action took place over several days. The bombardment was only to cover the landing troops and soften the defenses. Not to level it. The British ultimately really wanted Baltimore and fort McHenry would have best been left intact so they could use it to defend Baltimore in the event they captured Baltimore. Francis Scott Key was aboard an American truce ship the night of the bombardment. He was not relaying and reporting what was happening to the prisoners aboard the British prison ships. He never went aboard the prison ships. George Washington did NOT say, "The thing that sets the American Christian apart from all other people in the world is that he'll die on his feet before he'll live on his knees." The earliest this quote has been found is from The Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, circulated by anti-Franco counter Fascists. The flagpole never received any direct hits never mind "repetitious" direct hits as the video claims. It was destroyed many years later by a lighting strike. The flag was not in shreds from battle. It was never hit. That night was bad weather so they had a smaller storm flag flying which would have been rain soaked and not able to fly enough to be hit and shredded. The large flag Francis Scott Key most likely saw was put up that morning and could not have been battle damaged as it was not flying during the bombardment. It was only damaged by souvenir hunters many years later which leaves us the "shredded" flag we see in the Smithsonian. The British guns were not aiming at the flag, they were most likely aiming at the cannons on the redoubts. There were no bodies holding the flagpole up, it never received any direct hits and nobody was running out and holding the flagpole up during the bombardment... it was 87 feet tall. The whole garrison couldn't have held it up if they wanted to. There was only light damage to the fort from the rockets, mortars and shelling. The worst damage, which caused most injuries and deaths, was when the fort's powder magazine was hit directly and exploded. Only 4 people died and 24 were wounded inside the fort the night of the bombardment. None were near the flagpole. NOTHING in that story is true. It is all a bunch of far right evangelical christian propaganda (lies) to promote christian American exceptionalism. The events happened just not anywhere near the way he describes.

One of my favorite things we did when we were kids was going to Fort McHenry, which was where the battle took place, at the entrance to Baltimore harbor.

The name of the fort is actually Fort McHenry. I lived within walking distance of the fort as I grew up in Baltimore, in the 1940s and 50s. This was during the War of 1812, and took place in Baltimore Harbor.

Most of my ancestors were early colonists from England & Scotland; a few from Ireland and Wales. My parents on both sides were very proud of their British/American ancestry. Many of our ancestors also fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and every other war our country has taken part in since. A lot of Americans share the same ancestry as mine to a greater or lesser degree. We're proud we won our independence and also proud of our ancestral roots.

As were mine. Both sides of my family fought in the American revolution and the War of 1812. All of my ancestors came here before the 1800’s.
