It should only take a few notes for anyone watching to realize they are watching greatness, whether they previously heard of Julie Andrews or the Sound of Music, or not. She hits every note correctly from the first instant; I've heard even famous singers kind of slide into the correct note when their first attempt isn't quite right. Her voice is full, steady, not shrill, no matter how high the note. Fabulous.

Her vocal range was amazing. She should have been cast in the Camelot & My Fair Lady films - she nailed the theater versions, but Hollywood wanted movie stars who either had to be dubbed (Audrey Hepburn) or weren't great singers (Vanessa Redgrave). They gave wonderful acting performances but Julie had both the acting & singing talent. Her astounding range is on full display & perhaps best seen in Victor/Victoria, a film where she sings as a female impersonator, hitting deep & high notes effortlessly. Thanks for showcasing Julie Fil - I gotta go dig out my musical soundtrack vinyls to relive those great performances. Cheers!

While Julie was not offered MFL, she WAS offered Camelot according to Julie. Because of all the “kerfluffel” over her not being chosen for MFL, Julie was concerned that if she accepted the role of Guinevere, it might seem like sour grapes or an “up yours” so she turned it down to avoid any repercussions or more Hollywood pettiness.

I was 8 yo and mom and dad took us 5 kids to see “The Sound of Music”. I didn’t really understand the whole story and the era at the time. Over the years I understood everything, I grew to love the story and music. Now, fast forward to late December of last year. I bought mom a DVD player and videos, she was 98 and in a nursing home, one of the movies was TSoM. Unfortunately I’d couldn’t get everything hooked up and working yhat day, two days later mom passed away on December 31. The movies I got for mom I gave to the nursing home hoping that the residents will enjoy them. Fiddler on the Roof,, My Fair Lady, The Music Man, The African Queen, The Ghost and Mrs. Murr and of course The Sound of Music. I had tears in my eyes giving them away and was choked-up I could hardly talk. But I’m going to pick up The Sound of Music and keep it. Thanks Fil!!!! Of Eliza Dolittle, "It is the definitive role for a woman in the musical theater," Julie Andrews told The New York Times in 1993. "It's terribly demanding. You're a screaming cockney girl to start, with all those rage-filled songs, followed almost immediately by pure singing, followed almost immediately by long scenes of acting. Maria Callas came backstage once and said she couldn't believe we did eight performances a week.”

I always get chills when hearing her... and then comes the lump in my throat and the tears in my eyes. Such a beautiful voice. Of course, I'd be remiss if I didn't admit that although I adore "The Sound of Music" and Julie Andrews' performance, my favorite song in that entire movie is "Edelweiss" which was overdubbed by Bill Lee for Christopher Plummer.

Julie Andrews is definitely a one off. I was taken to see Mary Poppins in the cinema when I was about 5 or 6. Sound of Music a year or two later. She always seemed to be full of beans. When I got older I had to laugh at quite a few things that I missed in Sound of Music, such as the young soldier singing to the daughter about how important it was that he was 'Older and Wiser' at 17 compared to her 16. lol

An absolutely fascinating discussion! ....In southern U.S. speech, you will often hear "I" as "ahhh" alone -- what Fil is saying is the first vowel sound of "I" Julie Andrews is singing.

When I was in my 20s I got free tickets to see miss Andrew's in concert at the Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami Beach. I was amazed but not impressed, she never hit it out of the park. At the end of the concert we all got up and left,no standing ovation. I felt bad for miss Andrew's.

And not to be forgotten, Mary Poppins preceded just one year before The Sound of Music. Julie Andrew's voice is of the beautiful sounds from my childhood and I will never be able to separate her song from my life. And as always I have happily spent too much time with Wings of Pegasus today. Thank you again!

I appreciated your musical analysis of Julie Andrews’ performance and vocal abilities-she is truly a legend. As you mentioned, there was so much to her voice in terms of her octave range, clarity, and delivery. I agree that she was a voice of a generation; there wasn’t anyone like Julie Andrews. Thanks for this great analysis, Fil!

Julie Andrews-one of the nicest and most talented people on the planet. She never pulled rank on a film set, unlike many American “Stars”. My experience was that the worst sort were minor TV stars who thought they were really “big” but in fact were nothings. Julie Andrews is a true Star of the highest order and a beautiful human being.

WHo doesn't love Julie Andrews? I loved My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, Victor/Victoria. She was recognized as a child as a phenomenal singer on November 1, 1948, Julie Andrews, 13, became the youngest solo performer ever to be seen in a Royal Command Variety Performance before King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at the London Palladium.
