She totally broke the mold in a male dominated industry back in the early 80s. When most women groups were still singing of unrequited love she turned that upside down by breaking the boundaries of putting her sexuality out there and was a huge influence on womens new self image to be the dominant and take control in their relationships I think many young women take this for granted now 😎🎼

@@katevalentine7075 Did publishing photos of her genitalia advance her career or inspire young women to be entertainers? Or did she inspire others to become raunchy? I think she has shown that what Billy Joe Shaver sang in a song is true that "simplicity don't need to be greased"! She could have done this solo but why not let someone add some fill in melody?!

@@katevalentine7075 having "control" in relationships does not work, having things be equal does. Women are not oppressed and never have been (unless the wanted to be). Housewives as they were known loved to be home raising the children they loved while dad worked and was paid enough to support them financially. Womens Lib ruined that ideal for everyone, another liberal ideal failed, as planned. Todays narratives about the past is so skewered it uneducates us. The 1920s single Black parent homes were around 20%, then after social programs of the 1960s that number went up to 80%! Who does the oppressing? Democrat leadership and now we have it in full throttle...look out! They want you poor, needy and in search of help which they offer up in exchange for your vote. THAT is oppression!

When my son was 10 years old, he would wake up and before he even opened his eyes he would reach for his guitar and just start playing. He used to serenade me with Spanish style music before he went to school and when I told him to go wake up his sister he would enter her room and start jamming some crazy stuff. I remember her screaming for him to stop. My house was filled with guitars leaning against their stands. They all were works of art to me. And, the band always practiced at our house and they had an audience of one. Me😊 There's just something about live music and standing next to the lead singer and wondering where that voice was coming from. Sure, I lost a bit of hearing from the seven-foot-tall amps and I got to feed the band after practice. Some of the best memories of my life. I am my son's biggest fan. Sincerely, Carly

@@Hat5858 My son is a 6 ft 4 inch music-loving, hiking and camping man who played in a band that only did original music and he managed the band and got them into some really beautiful big venues. After that he worked for a company that booked the bands and worked out the pay they were going to get and made sure that their riders were done correctly. Then he ended up managing one particular band and going on tour wherever they went and making sure that they were happy and fed well and then covid hit and there were no more musical venues. And, in the end he saw the business from both sides. He told me that it's not an easy job to be a traveling musician in a band. Sometimes, I would ask him to get me tickets when a certain band I liked was getting booked near us and usually I would have just missed them but, my son would tell me who was extremely polite and nice. He also used to run those outdoor festivals that took place in the summer. He's not famous but, I can tell you that he still has every friend he ever made including musicians that he can call. I like to tell my son that he is the only person I know that could talk a bird out of a tree in the winter with an ice cube in his hand. 😊 Sincerely, Carly

I've never been a fan of Madonna's, but I loved her voice in this song. Because I don't really like her music, I never thought about how good her voice is. Now, I have a new appreciation for her. And I'm so impressed by her musicianship. I had noticed a lot of what Phil (or Fil?) said - how her playing kept the rhythm going and how she looked at Monty (I felt a little nervous for her there) and how she was able to concentrate on her guitar playing while singing. She could have had a safety net with another musician in the mix, but this pared back sound was beautiful. It was a brave thing to do, and shows how talented she is

“She could be playing this an easier way”… Madonna has never been known to take the easy path 😂. Her voice sounds beautiful here, though her phrasing and diction lack spontaneity due to the new tension of focusing on guitar and singing simultaneously. On that, she actually did learn some guitar in the late 70s when she was a drummer in a couple of bands. I think it’s admirably humble that she admits she’s starting again, because that early experience was not developed at all, and was really just youthful exploration. She did play drums at the bands’ gigs though, that’s well documented. Thanks again for another fair and respectful assessment of a very talented and hardworking artist and culture maker. She deserves it. She’s earned it. And way too many people denigrate her work just because they have some neurotic aversion to her or what she stands for. I’d LOVE a to see you react to either of these videos: Madonna VOGUE acapella. Which is a studio demo of Vogue with Madonna doing all her own layered backing vocals as well as the lead. It’s a great example of her song-craft because Vogue was written with Shep Pettibone, with him composing the instrumental and her writing the lyrics and vocal melody. There’s a perception of her that she’s not a writer, but the credits tell another story, as do her collaborators, who all speak in glowing terms about her lyric and vocal melody, bridge, hook writing etc, as well as her vision as a producer. & The Popcrush video Madonna’s Best Live Vocals

I remember when I took lessons about 20 years ago, my teacher recommended that brand because of its really great neck ... almost like an electric guitar's neck ... it's a bit narrower than most acoustics -- at least that's what he told me! ;-0 ... She wasn't bad playing those 4 chords... I was just waiting for a bridge that never came ... It was kinda getting monotonous being the same 4 chords over and over. But you're right, once you learn those first chords, you never forget them. My teacher also said that you can get into a car accident, get amnesia and forget everything about your life ... but you'll always remember those chords and your hands will know what to do (motor skills). I should start playing again to see if he's right! LOL!

Yeah I think her guitar playing in the late 70s/early 80s was probably at about at this level. She learned some basic chords so she could write songs. Same with her synth skills. Then, after she got big she hired producers and musicians to do that stuff and focused on the lyrics and vocal melodies. In the end, it was a wise decision because even though she made less money from royalties, she probably ended up with better songs from collaborating with more experienced musicians.

Amir Arif, people can dislike music because of their tastes - nothing to do with how young artists are idolised. That always happens, in every generation. In my generation, it was Madonna. I preferred listening to British pop and great singers like Tracy Chapman. I couldn't name you a single Justin Bieber song and I have no idea who Cardi B is. I'd even be hard pressed to pick out a Beyonce song. I'm not sure that my daughter is familiar with them either. But, then, do you know some of the bands or singers who we like? It was originally written by her brother in law Joe Henry and she turned into a folk/electro song. This was a stripped-down rendition, which I'm guessing was more like Joe's original version.

First thing I noticed is she’s strumming with her arm. She needs to loosen her wrist. But I will say for just learning and doing this live, she’s doing really well with singing while playing as a beginner.
@larrypower8659

One thing she’s doing well is getting to the next chord ON TIME. That’s not an easy thing to pick up right away. And she’s keeping her strumming hand in motion. That’s key. “The right (strumming) hand is the drummer!” I can hear my summer music camp instructor saying it over and over. The strumming hand is the time keeper, and that is one of the most important aspects of learning to play guitar. Yes, she’s placing her 2nd finger on the root G note a bit late but she is getting to that chord on time.

Even at the time this aired I was surprised at how on-pitch and relaxed her vocal was. She has definitely sung better and with more range/power than this and it's not a hard song to sing, but something makes me think that her focus on the guitar helped her vocally.

There are 3/4 quality guitars. I had real trouble as a beginner reaching,but your fingers gradually stretch easier. A good store should be able to help,or even suggest a model with a less chunky neck you can fit your hand round easier.

Yes you could look at 3/4 sized guitars, or try a full size and see how it is. A lot of players with small hands play full size guitars, myself included! I always suggest using light strings to make playing easier, 8's for electric strings and 10's for acoustic strings is a good place to start ☺

I was learning on what seemed like a huge classical guitar, in my mid teens. My teacher insisted that I cut my nails short so that I could hold down those thick strings on one hand and pick with the other hand. I'm only 5 feet tall now, so my hands were tiny back then. I wish that I had started off with something a little easier to manipulate, and that I'd stuck at it. Perhaps I could try again...

She CAN sing very well. I love her artistry though, because she is an all round performer, and with great versatility, as well as having lots of social awareness in her lyrical content. She sings live a lot in her shows. She lip syncs when she performs elaborate choreography, and she's also been using vocal distortion methods for effects, like another dimension of her performance.

Oh, she’s for real. I remember when she was on SNL in the ‘90s and sang “Bad Girl” with a live band while just sitting on a stool. Her voice had even improved by then; not so nasal. I don’t know if she took lessons, made a conscious effort to adjust her technique, or just what
@FindingMadonna
@FindingMadonna 3 жыл бұрын
@@hubbsllc I never considered her voice "nasal." It was high-pitched in those early years, but some of those songs were manipulated in the studio. You can hear in other songs like "Holiday" and "Angel" that she had a full range.

Most people do not play their G chord using third finger for the root G on the 6th string. That is definitely how I learned my G chord, the “old school” G, from the Mel Bay Method. (Yeah, I know. I’m old) A “modern” G chord is taught the way Madonna is trying to play it. Guitar is really about making things as easy as possible and Fil is correct about playing the G chord “old school” style. It makes that particular chord change more efficient and easier.

With al respect, I only like a few Madonna songs, and Tell me is one of those. (The others are True Blue, Cherish, Music, Ray of Light). Is it really true she just learned to play the guitar for this song? Somewhere on YT, I saw in a documentary she started in music in bands as drummer, guitarist (breakfast club, emmy and the emmys). Perhaps self-taught back then? Anyone knows?

That's why I always look to each of the musicians behind the singer. You find some real gems there. When Government Mule lost their bass player they wouldn't replace him for quite a while.
