About 20 years ago, my wife came home from visiting her grandmother in the nursing home. She asks me, "Have you ever heard of Frankie Valli?' I was like, "Hell, yeah. Why?" She goes on to tell me that he was at the nursing home visiting a female relative of his. It was her birthday. He had the staff bring the piano in the common room and he did a solid 2 hours for those elderly folks. My wife said that they were loving it. He not only did his songs, but was taking requests like "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". This was unbelievable, this nursing home is not in Jersey or even close. It is in a little bitty town in Oklahoma. My respect for him got even bigger.

He really punches those notes dead on pitch. Amazing breath support and control. Impressive.

Frankie is one of those artists you can name upon hearing just( barely) one single note. That's how historically and unmistakably recognizable his voice is. What a great career he's had along with his fellow band mates. They are timeless. You explain the singing voice so well. Thank you Fil. 🙂

The Four Seasons were my older sisters favorite live band. For decades she followed them,one of the last things she did before she passed was to see them live at a local casino.it made the end of her life a lot more bearable.

I was in elementary school when these guys were really popular and every Friday we got to spend the second half of the day dancing in class. Our teacher was very much into music of all kinds and we would push our desks to the walls and crank up the music and dance. I can remember this song as being one that we danced to on a regular basis. I was in elementary school in Southern California and we spend our summers on the beach so the whole Southern Cal/West Coast sound was what we were listening to. Good memories. You are so damn cute, Fil. I know creepy coming from a 66 year old but still I so enjoy listening to your love of music in all its forms. Thank you for taking me back to a wonderful time in my life. Music always does that for me.

I remember when this song came out. It was pre Beatles and music was pretty dull at that time and no one had ever heard a voice like Frankie's. It was raw and gritty and the lyrics were almost naughty. We kids loved it. I wouldn't trade growing up in the Sixties for anything. What an incredible time to come of age.

Frankie Valli is a legend. If you watch the movie "Jersey Boys", some of the stuff might be exaggerated. But the barber shop stories are real. I heard it was in Bloomfield, NJ. Valli was there, so was Joe Pesci. Pesci was a barber too. I used to have a friend who got haircuts from Pesci. Small town boys make it big. An American story.

They had so many catchy songs. Loved them as well as Dion and the Belmont’s from that era

I took my father to see Frankie Valli on a tour just a couple of years ago, and amazingly enough he can still hit most of the notes perfectly well. Clearly there was a singer in the combo that was doubling a lot of his vocals in case he couldn't make it - he is over 80 years old now - but it was totally clear that he got most of it himself. The group still plays around 100 theater-scale dates a year, and it wasn't some kind of showcase that only brought him out for a little while - it was a full on concert that covered all of the hits over the years. Very impressive.

Really interesting. The very first album I ever bought was the 4 Seasons 1964 Rag Doll album featuring Ronnie, which I think was a #1 hit. It cost $2.57 and it wasn't even stereo, it was monophonic, which was fine with me as I didn't have a stereo, I was playing it on my parents' suitcase portable record player. I still have the album. I was into electronics and I finally bought a decent turntable and built a Hi-Fi amplifier, and I remember what a revelation to hear the sound of these bands in high-fidelity instead of coming from a tinny transistor radio.

I dabble in singing myself, and I can attest that going from chest to head to falsetto is very hard to do accurately and with a similar tone, so it does not sound forced or strange. I also love 'Sherry' from Frankie... thanks for the analysis as always Fil...

Was never a big Four Seasons fan most of my life until I saw The Jersery Boys in New York City about 5 years ago. What a great musical that was. If you get a chance its a must see.

Gee, no blocked video? AMAZING! :) I always loved his falsetto parts. All these 5' 5" dudes can really get up there. Brian Johnson? 5' 5". Dio? Frankie? I mean, so many tiny guys with high voices. Lou Gramm? The list is endless. Frankie had a weird sounding voice, tho. But so did a lot of singers. What mattered was could he sing or not. I think he hit pretty much all his notes right on the money. Although it's easier to hit like that when you don't do a slide from each note but still he was really accurate. Nice point about singing into a new key. Not the easiest thing to do. nice vid.

Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons was a group even my Mom like back then. to the best of my knowledge this footage was from the "Hullabaloo" television show that aired from January 12, 1965 to April 11, 1966 (with reruns continuing until August 29, 1966) and featured some of the most popular pop/rock acts of the mid-60s. a good one Fil.

I was lucky enough to see Frankie Valli and Four Seasons in Concert three times through the 60s-early 70s.. The first time was in 1967 in Washington DC. The concert was stunning and I was amazed about how authentic and great they sounded live, they were perfect. They were extremely entertaining, this probably isn't well know, but besides performing their music, I think they spent just as much time talking, interacting with the audience and just joking around with each other than actually performing their music, it was the perfect packaged performance, it flowed! The banter between the guys was awesome and extremely funny! One of the best concerts I've ever seen as far as total entertainment!

Until a couple years ago, I had an apartment not far from La Jolla Playhouse, where "Jersey Boys" premiered. The Playhouse owns a number of the other apartments in that complex, which they use for lodging their itinerant actors. Next door to me was one of them--I crashed a number of good wrap parties there! Anyway, I gave their shuttle van a jump start one day, and wheedled a ticket--pretty good seat, too-- out of them. Within the first five minutes I knew if I wanted to see this again I was gonna have to fly to New York and spend bongo bucks to see it on Broadway. The guy who played Frankie at that time was my neighbor. He met with Valli in Vegas and Frankie told him to speak as little as possible on performance days--EXTREMELY demanding role. He opted out of the show when they went to NY, and I think it was because he'd have to do two shows some days there. EDIT: I have no idea why You Tube ran a line through some of this. ??

Frankie VAlli is one of the best singers to come out of the rock era. Just about any rock music book you open up and they talk about the early sixties music, all you will read about is The Beach Boys and very a seldom word about the 4 Seasons. The 4 Seasons were the first self contained band who wrote their own songs and played their own instruments and were on their fourth number one hit song while The Beach Boys were barely hitting their first number one song hit in 1964. The 4 Seasons had already scored a number one hit song in 62, 63 and 64 as well as being the only band to score a number one hit song before during and after the Beatles. I am glad Fil "did" this one. Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons have a very large catalogue, lots of great music to listen too. Odd how I was listening to singers in falsetto (Bee Gees, Samantha Sang) and Fil just happens to do Frankie Valli. One vocalists from the period that I listen to (not falsetto) is Elaine "Spanky" McFarland (Spanky and our Gang). There is an outtake video of them doing "Sunday' where Elaine is able to simply turn on her full singing voice, in seconds. I know Fil says our singing voice is our speaking voice but this girl turns on an entire different voice. Thanks Fil.

Hi Fil, Thank you for your analysis, it is excellent. Great job. I always learn something new from you. Back @ 1972-73, I had the honor and pleasure of being a member of their band playing keyboards. Let me say that in the time I was with them, I learned a lot, not only musically, but professionally as well. My career eventually ended up doing, and still doing studio work/productions, all thanks to them, and the professionalism I learned from Frankie. The guys are top notch, and Frankie a very disciplined, kind, and fun person. While the rest of the group/band went along our day, Frankie was taking care of his voice, and very dedicated to it. A very disciplined person. He has an incredible voice. In rehearsals, he would sing off the microphone, and his voice was the same as on the records. What a talent !! Anyway, thank you for recognizing Frankie's talent and please, continue doing the great work you do.

Saw them last year in Florida. Put on an awesome show. Whole audience was dancing. Ofcourse he had all new backup singers and dancers. But his voice was still amazingly strong.

I think my favourite song for key changes is New Kid in Town by the Eagles. Somehow they lift it above the old Truckdrivers Gear Change epithet. Nice video. I'll always remember Rag Doll.

Great analysis as always. I was born in “60” so I heard a lot of Frankie on the radio when I was a child and always found his voice to be mesmerizing. With his tone and the way he could switch registers he reminded me of a parrot or a myna bird. A remarkable and unmistakable singer.

As a non musician kid in the 70s I was listening mainly to kiss but, soaking in everything else on the radio. It took a while for the Four Seasons to catch on, but once they did - with "Sherry" - they had a long string of hits (including three straight Number One hits beginning with "Sherry"). They were one American band who continued to do well right in the midst of the British Invasion.

Frankie Valli has such natural singing ability that his recordings are a clinic on how to appreciate the musical gift of the voice. I never made the connection between Randy Meisner and Frankie Valli but both artists have voices that create harmonies that you just know when their voices are in that harmony. I mean once Randy left the Eagles while their songs were fine Rany's harmonies not being present were noticed. Same thing with Frankie in that, of course, his solo voice was the thrust of the 4 Seasons but also as Fil points out Frankie masterfully sang harmony so well. What a voice Frankie has and had in those 60's records.

Never realized till I saw Jersey Boys that the Four Seasons were a BAND. Bob Crew and Gaudio wrote the songs and the band played them. Always thought of them as just a vocal group.
