What I liked about Nirvana was under all the distorion, the dark, sometimes f*cked up lyrics, were some great melodic songs that a stuck me more than the other grunge bands.

I think a big part of Nirvana's success was due to Cobain's song writing ability. In addition to what turned out to be his natural appeal and charisma as a person and entertainer...

@@avalondreaming1433 I am sure they are good, but theres a reason that music is not popular anymore, coming from the current young age group its really just gooffy that they play dad rock, thats why you will not hear them on any radio station aimed at 35 and younger. They are not innovative and that is a huge problem, they are only appealing to something that has already been done, even if it is great

I first heard Teen Spirit while skiing in Montana. It was coming from an outdoor cafe about 200 feet below me. As the sound rose up through the spruce and pine, I thought, finally! Something truly different, real and honest. Too bad Kurt was such a troubled individual. What a loss. Thanks so much Fil for your usual insightful analysis. You never cease to amaze.

I still view 1990's grunge as that generations version of 1970's punk. Raw, unpolished - a rebellion against the over-polished, over produced music that preceded them. Although I thunk grunge had better written lyrics (on average) than punk.

Yeah, grunge was the soundtrack for the 90s. This stuff, like punk, pushed a movement, not phenomenal music. It's a creation of a new culture, driven by youth. Personally, I found nirvana to be a relevant, but just not my cup of tea. The unplugged gig on MTV was their finest moment as a band.

Something he got from Pixies. Kurt said he was trying to write a Pixies' song when he wrote this. They didn't come up with the "loud quiet loud" but they were one of the first bands to make it a major part of their sound

If my memory is still with it the nevermind album was their second release and came out I think in 1991 and it was the first time that Dave Grohl was featured as drummer, I was blown away by their sound and personally felt like this was one talented group that was trailblazing the living s*** out of everything that came before! And I'll be damned as they were loving every bit of success they were getting, it's a shame what ultimately happened but we are all people of imperfection♡

I think you nailed this analysis. I really got into grunge in my early 20s, especially Nirvana, after listening to hard rock and metal in my teens in the 80s. I think a significant part of it was, as a young woman, I just could not take any more "Cherry Pie". Not just the lyrics, but the videos too. Kurt Cobain, in particular, was so deliberately anti-macho (remember the floral dresses he would wear?!) and it was so refreshing. I think it also explains why a band like Metallica, who never got into the "Girls, girls, girls" shtick, continued to just do what they do and be very successful in the 90s and well beyond.

@@wingsofpegasus Since you are the first musician to respond to my comment (because you are wonderful) I have a query and a request. Do you have a list of guitarists you would list as "Must Listen To?" You toss out names and I sometimes feel a bit lost as this isn't my area of expertise. At other times I am so impressed that you know so much. Secondly, my late father had a theory about the musicianship of early rock artists. He wondered if the quality of their music had to be richer because record producing companies were somewhat hesitant to sign artists of this new genre. I'm not so sure.

I always caught that that TOTP were mimed but they looked good lol! I prefer Rockpalast and Midnight Special because they were really live or at least I know MS was, and Rockpalast's definitely seemed to be. Learned about a year ago that the first hit Nirvana had was a cover of Shocking Blue's Love Buzz! I do remember seeing them on MTV when I was a little kid but pretty sure it was this song I saw them do that made them big. That whole 'who cares' attitude, the rawness, power cords, anyone can just pick it up and play - all of that you mention sounds like some commonalities with garage rock of the '60s. The style or type of lyrics and atmosphere are different, but those other elements seem very similar to me after listening to your explanation. Interesting as always, Fil. :)

Even thought the music was different than what I grew up listening to, I loved it! Just all out jammin! They bought cheap equipment and beat the hell out of it! I remember Kurt shoving his guitar right into a speaker cabinet and through the speaker cone! The bass player threw his bass into the air. It came down and smacked him in the head. I was a teen in the 90s and saw all the grunge bands and alternative bands at the time, and yes it was a big middle finger to hair bands and polished 80s glam rock and it touched us as young punks, we were already listening to punk at the time, and these bands were, like the song says, "come as you are".. It was a time of be yourself, and there were so many of us that did not fit in. This spoke to us. It inspired us, and will always be the sound track of my youth, I was there, and it was some of the best times of my life as a young man and music lover. It was real it was raw, what more can I say, it struck a chord with my generation, we did change music, we change it all, although it seems mainstream music is feeding people fast food junk again, we did make an impact. Nirvana definitely set the stage of that to happen. No flashy solos no hair spray, no spandex, no makeup. Just good songs. We also smoked a lot of weed..

Great analysis Fil, this is one that I hadn’t seen until today. It spoke to me a lot. To me lyrics are so important. I listen to Bob Dylan during his transition from protest music to full blown rock and to me some of the songs from “Another Side Of Bob Dylan” (1964) are some of the best ever. One acoustic guitar, a nasal beat up voice and awesome lyrics as well as incredibly moving melodies to accompany the lyrics. And it was subversive for the time period. I think Butch Vig and Nirvana planned it out pretty well. They recorded Nevermind for much less than most major label records were costing at the time. The Neve console at Sound City (which Dave Grohl purchased when the studio closed) helped and the room was perfect for drums... It wasn’t intended that way... sometimes there’s a sag in the floor or something that gives that great room sound...

Fil, love your vids, your perceptions and observations are usually in line with my own. The "grunge" scene was not unlike the early Beatles or Stones of the 60's, the Ramones or Sex Pistols of the 70's, or the early metal of the 80's, very basic in it's presentation and sound but the deeper you dig, the more technically impressive they become. An artist you may find interesting would be Son House, specifically Death Letter Blues, the time signature and slide guitar work is impressive. The song was also one of The White Stripes staples during their live shows. Keep up the great work....

One is extremely talented if they can make full stops in their music from a very high peak, and Kurt does it often in his songs. I love those full stops.

Hi Fil. I love your videos. They are very informative and help me appreciate true musical artistry. If you haven't already, I would love to see you do analysis of Luca Stricagnoli. He is a finger style guitarist that uses multiple guitars or guitars with several necks. Your choice on which video to analyze. There are many impressive ones. Cheers! Tim

A few weeks ago in one of your Yngwie Malmsteen videos I mentioned that Yngwie was a terrific player but a terrible musician. Kurt Cobain is the opposite of that.

i gotta look for that. how could YJM be a terrible musician, beyond being YJM? ok, my way or the highway but still.

Yngwie is a typical artist good at playing music on his instrument. He is not good at creating amazingly beautiful tunes and sound with diverse colors compared to recent player like Misha Mansoor,Tosin Abasi&Reyes and even Julian Lage. You would find great numbers of guitarists learn their great techniques from Yngwie and Van Halen and then dig into depth in melody itself while listening to Allan Holdsworth,Pat Metheny,John Scofield,Wes,Joe Pass… That is the point. And don't get me wrong.I'm not saying Yngwie can't make beautiful melody. He is more like a pioneer started the shred-playing trend with typical classical sound than one of the greatest on complex-harmonic-playing stuff.

Spot on analysis of how people will like one type of music and the next is trash to them. I was the same back when grunge came around. I didn't like it much at all. Some was ok, but for the most part I didn't appreciate it until years later. Dave Grohl was and is freaking great! Fil Rox! Great as always!

Smells like More Than a Feeling or Godzilla to me. :D That soft-loud soft-loud soft-loud Kurt used to great effect as did others of the 90s alt-rock genre. I think Kurt took it from Pixies/Black Francis tbh. Black Francis is a singer who is interesting to watch sing. He doesn't move, ever. He sings loud and soft and emotes like mad, but never moves a muscle. i'd best watch this before I say anything else. :D ETA: This idea I got earlier that Kurt was influenced greatly by not just Boston and BOC (he had to be because you can really hear both of those songs in this one, or I can anyway) but also Pixies - I just went and had a current listen to Pixies' Debaser and am completely convinced they were a big influence on Kurt Cobain. You should give it a listen sometime and see what you think. Oh, you're right about the cliched nature of the 80s. Pixies were a notable exception. There were some things like them going on that were not like your average rock band, but they weren't real mainstream. I read about how Dave Grohl first practiced his hard-hitting style. It was with toms on his pillows as his parents couldn't/wouldn't get him drums. :D

Yeah, Grunge marked the true end of Rock and Roll as a driving force. It was dark and many drugs were consumed with tragic deaths following. Hip Hop took over from there and our days were over. A sad moment...

I'm convinced the guitar intro is inspired by Strauss' Blue Danube. I noted Heart - Barracuda sounded like it was inspired from Rossini's WIlliam Tell Overture in the Glen Campbell video. This is a popular thing. Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water famous riff was Beethoven's 5th played backwards (admitted to by Ritchie Blackmore). It helps build familiarity, fast, to help launch songs into the stratosphere of popularity. Great song. "Everybody's talking about the new sound, funny but, it's still rock n' roll to me." Nice lyrics by Billy Joel. I think it holds true of Grunge. Nice video! *Any chance for some Alice in Chains* ( *Would* song specifically, Rooster, or Man in the Box)?

Great comment. Sorta thought Smoke was inspired by Ramsey Lewis "Wade In The Water" (really just a jam with Ian Paice playing something 'different') and it was the solos for Highway Star lifted from Beethoven with help from Jon Lord. Really doesn't matter. Rock!!

'Just Powercords' - Kurt was an incredibly melodic songwriter - one of the best - listen to Smells Like Teen Spirit' played on the piano, it's a haunting, complex melody - the way it was played by Nirvana live was certainly influenced by punk and garage - but Cobain's songs struck a cord because he was such a good song writer.
