The Dewayne Wise homerun robbery to save Mark Buehrle's perfect game is definitely one to check out. Considering there have only been 23 perfect games in MLB history that catch was unbelievable considering the circumstances. The fact that he was just put in the game that inning as a defensive replacement makes it even more crazy.

The funny thing about that catch at the 4 minute mark is that Fenway was infamous for YEARS for the light set up making it very hard to see the balls in the outfield, leading to a bunch of outfielders losing the ball like that entirely, thankfully the changed the light set up this year to make it easier but it really was hilarious seeing that a couple times a year for as long as I can remember

The thing that's important to know too is the context of some of these plays. There are some perhaps less impressive plays that have been made but because they were in playoff games, particularly winner-take-all games in a series, they're super special. One everyone will talk about is Willie Mays' catch in the 1954 World Series. For starters, he had to run out to 420ft from home plate (an area that's a home run in most parks, but was in bounds at Polo Grounds). He then catches the ball over the shoulder on the run, and then manages to it back to the infield to make sure the runner on first didn't tag up. All this with the winning run in the balance in the World Series means a lot of folks consider it the greatest singular play of all time. My personal favorite (as a biased Twins fan) will always be Joe Mauer's catch behind the home plate netting in 2010.

An underrated catch that never really gets put into these videos is Austin Jackson's Willie Mays-style catch that preserved a perfect game (well, if a certain umpire didn't mess up a call on the last out). That Hal McRae catch is awfully special. The ball was curving away from him, which was why he had to contort himself like that. Every time I see it, I worry that he’s thrown his back out. Realize also that the ball comes off the bat spinning, often curving twenty feet or more from its original path. This is particularly clear in the McCrae centerfield grab. The Johhny Gomes twilight noncatch illustrates the difference between bad outfielders and great ones. The great ones know exactly where the ball is going by judging the swing and the sound and the initial tenth of a second of the ball's flight, and they run to where the ball will be rather than trying to triangulate its position second by second. That's how they can turn their back, run full speed, and then know when to look up to make final adjustments.

The plays in and around the out of play areas are particularly special because definitely "out of play" areas have to have the catch completed before the player slides or runs into the out of play area or it doesn't count. Things on the field of play but not part of the game (tarps, things ATTACHED to railings, guy wires, cameras, etc) generally have ball park specific ground rules governing live or dead ball situations if the object becomes part of the play. But the dugouts themselves are out of play, the top of the step leading into the dugout is in the field of play.

Excellent catches all within this set, gentlemen. My three favorites, all in World Series games: 1954: Willie Mays (Giants) robbing Vic Wertz in Game 1. Mentioned a lot here already. 1975: Dwight Evans (Red Sox) robbing Joe Morgan in Game 6. The most athletic moment of an all-time classic game. 1991: Kirby Puckett (Twins) robbing Ron Gant. Puckett then would win the game with a home run in the 11th inning.

@@DNReacts in 1951, Mays was called up by the Giants to their top minor league team in Minneapolis (the Twins were still 10 years away from reality) and in one 10-day homestand so dominated the opposition that he never played there again -- the parent club immediately called him to the big leagues, where he managed only ine hit in his first 26 at bats. Amazing catches, no doubt. I guess something to remember though when reacting to these KZfaq “Greatest (insert sports thing here) in History” videos is that old archival footage must be hard to come by because I feel like every time I see one of these types of videos, the “history” isn’t actually a very comprehensive look at a sport’s full history as they only tend to go back about 30-40 years at most. But all that just means there’s more out there to discover! 😁

They omitted the greatest catch in history. Journeyman outfielder Dewayne Wise, who was brought into the game for defensive purposes, saving Mark Buerhle's perfect game in the 9th inning, pulling a home run back with a leaping catch over the wall, juggling the ball on the way down. At that time, there had only been 18 perfect games in 120 years of baseball. The words, "The Catch" remain emblazoned on the wall to this day. Many of these "greatest" videos are compiled by young people, or people who have biases for certain teams, so they don't know or care about teams that are outside their scope or interest, such as the White Sox.

Dude could make a bunch of these plays look easy and he'd regularly rob home runs. Look him up if you get the chance. He's DEFINITELY the best as far as fielding highlights in modern video era. Two notes one that one...Rose Griffey was at the game, after the catch the woman sitting next to her asked "Was that your son making that catch?" She replied in the affirmative and the woman said "It was my husband who hit it." Later in the game Barfield crushed one that landed about five rows deep in center, as he circled the bases he told the Mariners 2B "Kid would have needed steroids to catch that one".

The 3rd baseman catching the foul ball as he almost slid down the stairs? He almost went into the "dugout," not the bullpen as you said - I know- so many new terms to learn. It's a dugout because it is literally dug out - it's floor is a meter or so below the field. Probably done so to maximize sale of seats close to the field by lowering the roof.

Not sure how that video doesn't have this catch... I guess maybe because it was in the minors. Rodney McCray catches a ball and then runs through the outfield fence. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oJOGgMySrruoaH0.html

The video you guys reacted to felt light on actual "greatest catches in history" IMO. A lot of commenters have already noted some good ones (DeWayne Wise preserving Buehrle's perfect game, Jeter into the stands, Gary Matthews Jr., Willie Mays in the '54 World Series, Jim Edmonds, Endy Chavez in the NLCS, Trout robbing Hardy, Kevin Pillar, and basically Torii Hunter's entire career). Love the channel, keep 'em coming guys.

If your greatest catches video doesn't have Jim Edmonds, Andruw Jones, and Griffey Jr. its probably not "complete" This was pretty good though.

While a lot of great plays I wouldn't put any of these, with the exception of the David Wright catch, as the greatest catches of all time. Andrew Jones has more and better catches in a week than most of these. You can search for Andrew Jones Spiderman catch to see my favorite catch of his but if you just look up his defensive highlight you'll see a ton. Other outfielders with better catches than this video would include, Willie Mays, Jim Edmonds, Ken Griffey Jr, Tori Hunter, Kenny Lofton all have multiple great catches by themselves. Infielder catching line drives isn't that rare but they look really nice because of the short reaction time. Infielders catching pop-ups and going into the stands happens a lot too. I don't know that the ones in the video are even the best of that type of catch. This video needs to be rename to "Some really good MLB catches"

I know its a very subjective category, but the best catch I've ever seen was Gregor Blanco in 2012 against the Astros. He made a crazy diving catch in the 7th inning to preserve a perfect game for Matt Cain. Peep that one if you want to see the hypest crowd reaction too. Again it was a perfect game in progress. There's only 22 of them in baseball history. Cheers dudes! Thanks for the fun content!

A guy lost in the shuffle over the years, especially this catch, was Mike Devereaux. Devo gets probably about the same or more height as the one infielder, but the wall keeps him upright. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/opxzmade252omWg.html

This was a fun one because it included a bunch of catches I hadn't seen before but to be labeled as the greatest catches in history or of all time and to not include Willie Mays, Ken Griffey Jr, Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders, Kevin Mitchell, Tim Salmon, or Jim Edmonds is weird to me. Might have gotten a little click-baited here but none of these were slouches.
