That loud bang when everyone ran off the field was thunder! Bolt of lightning hit just outside the stadium

There's actually a very famous incident that led to the Vinditte rule! When he was in the minors he got into a standoff while facing a switch hitter. Both kept switching back and forth before the at bat in order the gain the advantage (pitchers want to pitch to same sided batters, hitters want to face opposite sided pitchers) and this went on for like 10 minutes before the umpires forced the batter to back down and they got on with the game. The "Vinditte rule" was created almost immediately to prevent this from happening in the future and how it's the standard law of the land for this hyper-specific scenario at basically all levels of baseball!

The Cubs jersey mixup was an accident. Lake changed into his "CUBS" jersey after the first inning to match with the rest of his teammates. There is a rule that all players have to wear matching uniforms, but because it was the same color and he changed as soon as he got off the field after the top of the 1st, I don't think any of the umpires noticed

Nick, you're technically right - lightning (and its subsequent thunder) does break the sound barrier, so you're hearing a sonic boom whenever you hear it - how close the lightning strike is determines how intense the sound is, and that sounded like it hit the actual stadium

The cubs jersey thing was an accident on Rizzo’s part. The cubs normally wear grey “Chicago” jerseys on the road. A few years back, they also had alternate road greys reading “Cubs”. They also sometimes wear their solid blue tops on the road too. It’s common for teams to have multiple uniform combinations like you guys mentioned. Only a few teams, (notably the Yankees) rely on only two: classic home white and classic away grey.

A foul tip is different than a foul ball. A foul tip is when the batter sharply fouls it into the catcher’s glove. If there are already two strikes and the catcher catches the ball he is out, if he doesn’t catch it it is just a normal foul ball. However if there are less than two strikes already and the batter foul tips and the catcher catches it, it is just a strike like a normal foul ball. The batter would have to pop it up and then the catcher catches it in order for it to be an out with less than two strikes.

One of my favorite wacky moments was when the Baltimore Orioles were facing the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre (the Blue Jays ballpark). It's a retractable roof stadium, but one time it malfunctioned as it was closing to due rain. It mostly closed. But the part that didn't happened to be directly over the pitcher's mound. The pitcher was dealing with a torrent of rain while everyone else was perfectly dry.

Back in the 1880s there was an ambidextrous pitcher called Tony Mullane who was from Ireland. This was before fielders wore the familiar baseball glove that we see today, and what he would do was he would face the batter with both his hands on the ball at the same time and then start a windup where the batter would not know which hand he was going to throw with until the ball was already coming at them 😂

That was lightning-when everybody ran off the field.

You simply never know what you might witness any given day when you tune into a game. One of the things that makes the game so great.

When running errors/bloopers happen and they have to review rules. Like with the base swap. It's drilled into you that unless you see the call, you're still in the game. And if the ball isn't dead, then you do anything you can to stay on the field. The legend of the first stolen base even had a moment like that. The guy just walked from first to second while the pitcher was on the mound. People laughed, then stopped laughing when he didn't go back to first. He demanded a rule check, ended up winning the base, and they had to change the rules to add stolen bases.

That’s one of the beautiful things about baseball- you still see stuff all the time that’s never happened before in over 150 years of game history.

Fun video to react to! There were a couple of moments I was expecting to see but weren't included. One would be the time when a ball literally bounced off of Jose Canseco's head and then over the outfield wall for a home run (look this up, it's hilarious). The other would be the time when I think it was Furcal at Shea Stadium who dropped his bat at home after putting the ball in play and the bat bounced off the ground and then stood upright with the knob pointing to the sky. It's one of those quirks like the ball getting stuck in the catcher's mask where you could run the same play a million times and never see it again.

In a White Sox game this year, the catcher failed to catch a pitch. It struck the home plate umpire square in the mask, knocking him out. The ball trickled away and the runner on 3rd base ran home and scored the winning run. You never know when you'll see something new at the ole' ballpark.

That guy who fell of the mound was Tim Lincecum, also know as The Freak because of his crazy delivery, something on the mound looks like it put him off balance or tripped him up.

These videos where they show the play in real time, then the replay a few times are my favorite. Really get to see the fun plays instead of zipping through or worse where you only see slow motion footage. Would love to see the rest of this series.

16:30 It's a home run if the ball goes*over* the wall having touched a fielder and not the ground, but the wall breaking like that is different. in this case the ball was still considered in play, but if the ball had fallen out of the fielder's glove I suspect the umpires would rule a double as that's what is called when a ball gets stuck in the fence or padding or, at Wrigley, the ivy.

Excellent watch! Nice to mix it up a bit. Just a note on the actual job of catching being one of the hardest jobs in all of sports. Catchers can take a hell of a beating back there from foul balls and misdirects. Not too mention all of the blocking, holding runners, nabbing stealers, and having a strong connection with the pitcher to be able to call the game. That highlight when the cover came off the ball--that was what we call a "literal metaphor". Sometimes when a ball is hit really hard, people will say the hitter (often "nearly") knocked the cover off the ball. And then there's that highlight, where a player hits a mundane ground ball that _actually_ causes the cover to come loose. Switch-hitters are far more common than switch-pitchers in baseball. Switch-pitchers are so rare in fact that they are considered a curiosity when they do appear. Switch-hitters are common enough that most teams have at least one. Switch-hitters often choose their side of the plate in response to the arm the pitcher throws with. Therefore, when a switch-pitcher finally showed up, it wasn't going to take long before a switch-pitcher and a switch-hitter had a standoff that necesitated a rule made for that specific scenario.

a foul ball that goes straight back, also known as a foul tip, even if caught, only counts as an out if there are two strikes on the batter. I think the idea was that, in pre-replay days especially, it could be difficult to tell if the batter actually made contact or not, and so they made it just be the same result in such cases.

For a year or two 2014-15, Cubs had an away jersey with the CUBS. Which they wore a handful of times. Their main away jersey is the CHICAGO

Usually the away jersey is grey with the city name, and the home jersey is white with the team name/logo. There are wild variations, though, since teams can sell more merchandise with more designs. So you'll occasionally see away greys with the team name, black or team color jerseys (astros orange, blue jays blue, red sox red etc). There will also be vintage throwbacks to teams that no longer exist and other things like special designs and patches for promotions.

Honestly the best thing about baseball is that something new and weird happens every week in MLB, so you should check out a couple more oddity videos!

Usually for home games you have the team name on your jersey because you're already in your hometown. For away games you usually have your city name on your jersey.

A second strike foul tip caught is an out but the catch rule says you can't catch the ball with other gear other than your glove, hand and body so you couldn't use your mask or hat to catch a ball.

You are really understanding the nuances of the game

1:22 - For context, the rule is that when 2 players are occupying the same base (during a non-force play like this one), the trailing runner is out. Since Braun was on first, the umpire correctly pointed directly and unambiguously at him and called him out. Now, this play goes off the rails when Segura, not knowing the rule (or just assuming it was himself that was out because he's the one who messed up), and not looking at the umpire, starts his trot to the dugout. When the first base coach tells him to get on first because he's safe, he does and he is fine to do that. What's worse though is, I think (hard to tell for sure based on the primary tv angle), that the fielder puts a second tag on Segura while he's off second but the umpire misses that because he is still signaling Braun out but nobody really catches that. The comment about Segura being able to go backwards is mostly correct unless he crosses paths with another runner but yeah, he totally steals first. 8:29 - If you're wondering what happened here, there is a relatively low roof at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg where the Tampa Bay Rays play. There's are even lower catwalks that encircle the roof that can and do interfere with play. The ball go stuck up in one here. They have very specific ground rules for it because it is so unique in MLB. In this case, it looks like it was over foul territory so it's a foul ball. Other situations could cause a ground rule double or even a home run (if it hits the correct catwalk and probably would have been a home run anyway). www.mlb.com/rays/ballpark/ground-rules 10:40 - That was definitely thunder from a very nearby lightning strike. 12:33 - So, on this play, Damo catches on to what one of the commentators asks if that is strike three because the batter with 2 strikes tipped the ball directly back to the catcher and it never hit the ground. Interestingly enough, there was a recent rule change about this. At the point of this play, the answer was no, it was just a foul ball because the ball wasn't tipped directly into the catcher's glove. The rule now is that, if strike 2 is tipped directly back to the catcher and it is eventually caught, the batter is out. The only thing I don't know for sure is if there is an exception for equipment like masks or pads. In this case though, definitely not out. 15:22 - Nick nails it, they probably brought multiple styles of away jersey on that trip and he had to switch to the other version for whatever reason. His Cubs one was probably lost or damaged. Teams these days have multiple version of home AND away uniforms. I'm just surprised they didn't have a backup he could use that was the same one they were wearing that day. Like Nick says, this generally wouldn't be allowed, even in baseball, but I think he gets away with it because it's the same colors all around. If they only had the blue jersey as a backup, that wouldn't work. 16:02 - This is actually what is called a catch and carry. Since he caught the ball in the field of play and maintained possession of the ball, the batter is out. However, since he then carried the ball out of play (beyond the fence) the ball is dead and the runners are awarded 1 base from the last base they legally touched when the player went out of play. The same rule would apply if there was a low outfield fence and he fell over it after catching it or he fell into the seats while catching a foul pop.

Teams can have multiple uniforms for home and road. Most are team name for home and city name for road, but alternatives are allowed. By the rules, uniforms must be, ahem, uniform among all players on the field, but most rules of that sort are up to opponent complaint. Umpires won't disqualify a player for such a mistake unless someone on the opposing team brings it up. This usually comes up for scorecard violations (something filled out wrong), but equipment violations (including uniforms) do sometimes come up, too.

That was entertaining. Some painful baserunning in there. Being a switch-pitcher might put less strain on the arm!

In regards to the foul tip into the catcher’s mask, it is not considered a catch. The rules state that a player cannot use any piece of his equipment, aside from his glove, to record a catch that would result in an out.

Teams have multiple jerseys. Standard and themed. Typically the home team wears the team logo or name like Yankees or Red Sox while the visiting team wears the name of the city like New York or Boston. But because NKB wants to highlight its uniforms to sell merchandise, they have a different uniform for each game of a series for both teams.

You never know what you'll see at a baseball game

The jerseys that have the city name are for away games. The nickname is for home games.

In MLB, the home team usually wears a jersey with the team knickname, while the visiting team wears a jersey with their city name on it. Tonight the Atlanta Braves are playing in Los Angeles. So the Braves jerseys will say "Atlanta" and LA's jerseys will say "Dodgers". The next time they play in Atlanta the reverse will be true: Atlanta's will say "Braves" and LA's will say "Los Angeles". It's possible that the equipment manager packed the wrong uniform, or the bag with the uniform was lost, and all they could have overnighted was a jersey of the right color but with the wrong name. There was a game in the early 2000s where visiting Virginia Tech had some of their equipment either lost or stolen while visiting Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech was wearing their dark uniforms (kind of an oddity, as GT usually wears white at home), so volunteered their white jerseys to the VT players. So the VT players wore GT jerseys with the "Yellow Jackets" covered in black tape.

That being said, while there were 2 strikes in that situation, I'm pretty sure that a catch is only considered a catch using the glove. For the switch pitcher the rule was put in place because in the minors the switch pitcher and switch hitter kept switching sides and there was massive confusion and then after that game they made that rule. To resolve the situation the umpires made a call that wasn’t in the rule book so they could move on with the game

Love the NHL videos. You guys should watch other dominant players from recent history; such as 3-time cup winner Patrick Kane who revolutionized stick handling (all the 25 and under players idolized him, arguably the best stick handler ever. David Pastrnak is an absolutely electrifying player. Draisatl, Mcdavid’s wingman, is probably the second best player in the league, he could lead any team. Three young Americans (22) are also creating a lot of buzz, they played together in juniors; Cole Caufield is a 5’7 elite sniper with the best personality ever, Jack Hughes is absolutely phenomenal, Trevor Zegras is ridiculously spectacular. They are best friends and play on different teams. You would also enjoy offensive defensemen such as Cale Makar, Rasmus Dahlin and Adam Fox. The #1 defenseman is the most important spot on any contending team and these 3 guys are just out of this world. You need to be able to play 25 minutes per game, 5-on-5, run the power play, kill penalties and play almost all of OT. They also quarterback the power play which is the main factor in winning games on most nights. They are defining the position at the moment. Just suggestions for you guys to better understand the game by looking at different players and positions! Keep the videos coming, cheers

Lots of players don't know the rule about who us out and who is safe when there are 2 runners on one bag. 2 things to remember here. 1. The original occupant of the base is always safe. 2. Whenever there are 2 runners on one base, they both should stay there until the umpire tells them who is out and who is safe. Segura didn't know the rule and didn't know how to handle that situation. That is a failure in managing; the manager needs to go over those situations in spring training. Clearly didn't happen here.

You should do a video that ranks the jerseys and alternates for all 30 teams. And maybe vote for what your favorite is.

The ball in the catchers mask is not a legal catch. Right have the baseball Wikipedia "If the fielder uses their cap, protector, pocket or any other part of their uniform in getting possession, it is not a catch. Therefore, a foul ball which directly becomes lodged in the equipment of the catcher (other than their glove) is not considered a catch and hence not a foul tip."

The ball getting caught in the catcher's mask wouldn't count as an out due to MLB rules stating that an out only counts when it's caught by the fielder's glove or hand. It's why the very few times where a ball went into a fielder's jersey wouldn't count as an out would be called dead. When it comes to jersey colors, the primary home jersey is white (sometimes with pinstripes) with the team's name or insignia on it and the primary road jersey is grey with the team's hometown on it. Most teams have alternate home and road jerseys with different colors and design, but white for home and grey for road is the traditional style. You guys should consider reacting to one of the biggest oddities in baseball history: The 1989 World Series between the Oakland Athletics and San Fransisco Giants where Game 3 was postponed due to an earthquake.

Technically, the ball in the mask is not a catch. There's a rule (i'm not gonna bother to look it up) that you can only use your glove or hands to catch a ball, no masks, no hats, no shirts, etc

The foul ball stuck in the catcher's mask was not a catch. There was a similar incident (which you might see in one of the later videos) where the ball managed to get stuck to the catcher's chest protector. The rules on catches near the boundary are much less punishing for the fielding side in baseball than in cricket. In baseball, the rule is only that you cannot have a foot touching the ground outside the playing area and you must have at least one foot on or over the playing area when you make the catch. If you catch it in play and then go into an out-of-play area (for instance, falling over the fence after making the catch), the catch still counts but the ball is dead and all runners advance one base if the catch is not the third out. I assume that's what applied after the Turner Ward (crashing through the fence) catch.

A CAUGHT foul tip is only an out of there are two strikes. Otherwise, it's just a strike.

Team name, home. City, away.

When a team plays away the use the jerseys that say the name of the city they are from. When they play at home they wear the jersey that says Cubs or Yankees and so on.

Your city name is across the chest of the away uniform and the team name is there on home jerseys
