There's one cool variation: night time flyovers which drop paratroopers carrying light markers and flares into a pitch black stadium are stunning. The 3-5 flyers may loiter and circle a bit first before descending. You hear the plane and slowly the paratroopers appear with halos of light and land on the logo at midfield. One of the guys usually delivers the game ball to a waiting referee. The rumble of the plane subsides and you see 3-5 little fireflies way up in the sky. They turn into flying humans with lights and trails of fire and smoke sometimes.

I have lived in Fresno, California, for most of my life and my wife and I graduated from Fresno State, as did our three kids. My wife and I attend anywhere from one to five home football games each year. We have a local Air National Guard fighter wing and a naval air station in nearby Lemoore. In spite of this, we don't have all that many flyovers. However, the paratroop drop is done for pretty much every home game. I prefer flyovers, but the paratroop drop is pretty cool.

My husband is retired military. He was in the Reserves. We live close to the base and they used to have Air shows. They were truly majestic and loud. It was done in a residential setting surrounding the base. The base is now partially closed so no shows anymore in this area. But it was exciting because we got to witness them practicing right over our homes and then we would head to the base on show day. The noise is still with me today. That last airplane, it goes by in the blink of an eye. It’s an out of this world experience. The military, for many of us, means we remember those who have gone before and those who serve now. The shows are exciting but mean so much more. I always like seeing the ones over Buckingham palace for special events. So meaningful. Hi Millie’s Mom. Good job.

I'm a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy--many, many years ago. Every year, the United States Military Academy at West Point (Army), the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis (Navy) and the United States Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs (Air Force) play each other--each academy plays one of the rival service academies at their home stadium and the other academy at their home stadium. There was no greater experience than when we (the United States Air Force Academy) would play the rival service academy at our home stadium--Oh My Days--the flyovers were incredible. We would have virtually (if not actually) every type of aircraft in the United State's Air Force inventory fly over the stadium--fighters, bombers, cargo aircraft, reconnaissance, and trainers--everything. It was mind-blowing, and sometimes, window-blowing as some of the aircraft would fly so low and fast that they actually shattered our dormitory windows--it was absolutely awesome.

I absolutely LOVE flyovers! Don't know if it's because I'm a disabled Army veteran, but it just does something to me emotionally. Tears streaming down my cheeks have absolutely nothing to do with sadness. It's more joy and pride in our country, thinking of the sacrifice that so many made in the name of freedom, and appreciating those who fought so others could live in some semblance of peace. The awesome power of those machines is incredible! THAT'S why I love flyovers. 🇺🇸❤️💙

I lived in Virginia Beach Va by Oceana Military Jet base and had fly overs all day long. You cannot hear even when a single jets flies over, let alone a formation. We were lucky to see the Blue Angels many times. Best airshows in the world. Certain planes fly over and your car's GPS goes out and needs reset.

I love the fly overs. I was raised on Air Force bases all over the world. I sleep better with night sounds from the south and jet engines. The patriotism that comes to the military brats is totally ingrained in us. We have sent parents off to war and when we got older and married military also, we sent spouses off to war. We know how to pray and to thank God for protecting our loved ones. Sometimes we loose our loved ones to the wars by death or the psychological effects. My Dad was a WWII, Korean and Viet Nam vet. My husband was Viet Nam era and Gulf War Vet. My Daughter is current day conflicts. She has been in for 20 years now. But these are not our only warriors. I have straight line warriors since before the revolution. So my heart sings with every fly over, every National Anthem and every Pledge of Allegiance. And I would give my life for my country because America should always be Free.

Being a Kansas City Chiefs fan and a resident of KC, I was touched by a particular flyover before a game with the Raiders. "On Sunday, October 13th, 2013, forty-nine homemade Van’s RV aircraft entered a tight formation and synchronized their flyover to occur at the very end of the national anthem. Not only did these pilots pull off a fantastic formation flight, but each plane left a pink smoke trail in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month." There are a few videos of this and I think you would enjoy seeing them.

Even at airshows, we have a separate plane do a flyover at the beginning! It's one of those things that, along with the flag, give you a reminder of what the anthem is all about, it's not just an old poem somebody wrote, it still has real meaning to this day. One of the cooler "flyovers" I've seen was at an airshow at an Air Force base and instead of having jets in the air waiting to fly over, they had two B-1 bombers take off during the anthem. Flyovers are always great but when there's 8 afterburners crackling in the background it's even better

Thank you for taking notice of a special tribute our military performs for our citizens and friends. I can say when I hear our national anthem it triggers a lot of emotion in me and if our birds fly over I will shed a tear of pride and joy and get a lump in my throat. When I hear our anthem I think about the men and women who are standing guard at the wall standing in harms way. I think of all who served and fought in the past and especially for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. May god continue to bless our great nation and the nations of our friends around the globe.

Then when they sang the Anthem we would do a flyover for them. They loved it. We did a lot of flyovers for different events, July 4th, Memorial Day, etc. We loved doing it and most of the time it was a complete shock to the people on the ground!

And I guess there are military planes that fly near the Capitol to an airbase about 30 miles from us.. Love the pap-pap-pap of the helicopters. Another super event we were able to see was the launch of a space shuttle from Cape Canaveral in Florida. That really shook the ground. There is also a big screen movie theater/cinema near us, where they showed a film of the takeoff of a shuttle and the camera must have been almost on the service structure. The sound was awesome. Hope you are doing well and getting enough sleep. Enjoy Millie’s mom. Thanks.

My father was in SAC, so I grew up near air force bases. The roar of jet engines on full military power still gives me goosebumps, and I'm in my 70s.

Yayyy!! I love Sally so much!! The best flyover I’ve ever seen was in Oakland, Ca before an A’s baseball game just after 9/11. The only time I’ve seen a stealth fighter in person. Watch Moneyball. Great movie and I was at a lot of those games. I’m a San Francisco Giants fan but I lived close to the Oakland A’s colosseum and whenever there was an extra ticket from my friends I would go to the game.
