A vid taken on a sunny day at Didcot now. This features a wide variety of traction-08, 37, 47, 50, 60, HST, DMU & a class 165 Turbo on Inter-City, Network SouthEast and freight workings. The pair of 50s were on a railtour. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

Great videos mate! I was born in 1996 which I'm so gutted about. Grew up in South London with the SWT slam-doors, but sadly didn't get to be around HSTs much when I was very young. And when I was old enough to start spotting, the Valentas were already on their way out! Feel like I've just missed-out on a glorious couple of decades for BR.

It was a good catch (although i did get all the HST power cars on vid!), and to get it powering away rather than storming along at speed, you get to hear it this way.

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus There's still a few MB190 generating units knocking around. The same V12 version became popular as a backup generator with the MOD, and British Rail computer centres. I did a quick search there's currently one for sale with only 1350 engine hours. We can only dream that the 125 Group will be kind enough snap it up. They should have one of each engine type.

Some nicely varied action. Very much the last days of the old school DMUs, though those Met Cams didn't look too bad in NSE version 2. That HST at 1:20 must have been one of the prototype re-engined cars; Mirrlees, were they? Great sound from the HST powering past at 9:48; that must have been a CrossCountry one with a buffer fitted power car.

Nice to see the Mirlees 125. I designed the governor/engine control system for them. There were four of them. I traveled about on them very much in the early days checking that all was working ok. I lost touch with them after a couple of years so I never did know how long they were in service. At the time of developing the system BR were promising lots more if these were ok but I think it was just an exercise to put pressure on Paxman to sort out their engine problems. The drivers seemed to like them as they could pull away a lot quicker.

It was a power car that had been converted to run with MkIII sets and a 91 at the other end. When the 91'a first worked on the East Coast they ran to Leeds and the MkIV coaches+DVT's wern't ready in time so the 91's worked with a certain number of HST power cars which to this day still run with their buffers! Some are at work on the MML, ex Grand Central ones.

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus The MIrrlees units sounded pretty good, as your video shows. They weren't as reliable as the old Valentas, and were 3.8 tonnes heavier. 43167-70 were the first WR HST power cars to be re-engined with the VP185s - 43167 was transferred to the ECML in 1995 I think, and it lost its VP185 in 1999 for a standard Valenta unit. Thanks for sharing this video - they were good days indeed. SUBSCRIBED!

@2.03 43011 Before it was written off and scrapped after Southall in 1997 sadly one of three Class 43's to be scrapped the other two were 43019 after Ladbroke Grove two years later and 43173 following the tragic level crossing collision at Ufton Nervet in 2004 that claimed 6 lives including the driver Stanley Martin to which 43139 was named after in his memory.

Great film again Soi, when the railway was cared for, and before the GW was desicrated by that farce of an electrification, grossly over engineered and mismanaged thanks to the incompetence of Network Rail, a company that seem to only be good at letting the lineside and permanent way go to wreck and ruin with Buddleia.

I assume you mean a conventional loco hauled train? It goes back to the dawn of railways, a locomotive at the front and wagons or coaches behind. The Inter-City 125's did away with this by having a power car at each end and unit trains have had this cab at each end system since the early days of London Tube trains. As time has progressed traditional loco haulage has disappeared and saves the need to run round locos at the destination point. Although there are still push-pull loco hauled sets, a loco one end and a driving van or coach at the other, run on the same principles as a unit train.

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus ohh thanks . I think I sort of get it now . Still a little confused . So they drive loco's from the back sometimes ? Up until the last 20 years were DMU'S and emu's with cabs at each end , not powerful enough for long distance high capacity trains ? Like now , there are the all sorts of hybrid D/Emu 's that they use for long distance .
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 4 жыл бұрын
@@muk8804 Inter-City trains had an engine at the front & coaches behind. At the terminus another engine was needed to take the train back again. Then the Inter-City 125 came along with a power car (engine with cab at one end only) at each end of the train. These were unit trains, the power cars can only work as part of a 125 set. The train is through wired so the driver at the front controls both power cars although sits at the front. Some IC trains have a loco at one end with an un-powered driving van (coach with driving controls to work the engine at the other end) at the other and again saves having to need another loco at the terminus.
