Please note: This is a reupload of the original version with the railway scene cut out. Instead of that scene is an explanation of why it was removed and our stance on it.
Watch in 1440p and with subtitles for full effect
Join myself and Welsh Greg as we embark on a gruelling 6 day adventure in which we attempt across Scotland in a completely straight line. In Part 1, after a tricky first 3 miles we successfully scaled the Norbord factory fence without drawing too much attention to ourselves. Our aim now is to escape the factory, cross the railway track, motorways and abandoned fishery that lay beyond and reach the sanctuary of the north third forest where we can make a fire, dry off and if we're really lucky, tune into the Rugby. With a host of obstacles and various people up ahead on our line, it's bound to be tasty.

Although railways and motorways are inevitable and probably as illegal as walking through somebody's property, it indeed gives another feel. I'd say, for future missions, just tell straight to the camera that you are now going to pick up your secret jetpack or teleportation device and that you will see us on the other side. Make a running gag out of it and we as viewers can surely fill in the blanks when watching. But knowing about it and seeing it in action has quite a different feel about it in this case. Yearly a lot of people die by accident (kids really do play along tracks) or suicide in those places. The crossing itself isn't even as interesting to watch as the moments leading up to it and the hiding or relief after te fact, so I hope you can find a light hearted way around it! Good luck on your next missions!

filming illegal acts happens constantly on youtube with no further consequence, in case folks have never watched urban exploration, urban climbing, train surfing, graffiti or skateboarding channels. what tom did here was a single instance of a well planned crossing taking only a few minutes and bookended by disclaimers never to try it yourself. all i'm surprised about is that in 2021 someone was scandalized enough by a single track crossing to call the cops on them.

Trespassing is a civil offence in the UK. The worst that could happen is that the owners sue Tom for damages which would be pointless as Tom didn't actually damage anything. Even if he had bene caught doing it he'd have just been asked to leave (if he didn't leave then it becomes aggravated trespass which is criminal). Trespassing on railways is a criminal offence however and far more dangerous so I'm not surprised he was asked to remove it. Tbh I wouldn't be surprised if they asked him to still remove this as this was quite a non-apology

Everyone will have their opinions, it was a dangerous thing to do that could have had hellish consequences but you were both vigilant and accessed the risk to an extent - you weren’t pissing about on said railway. Tom, I think any straight line fan will be OK with future missions just 'pausing' when reaching a railway while you walk a few kms to the nearest bridge and back to the line on the other side of it. Completely reasonable way of making 'straight line missions' that more legit and setting a moral example. It's the exact same thing as turning off the GPS when you are camping. There´s also the point that if someone sees someone on the rails there´s a long string of consequences attached. Trains slowing down causing delays,leading to further delays, possibly thousands of people missing connections etc. blabla. Passing a major train line is more like running onto a runway than it is to cross a highway. I dont wanna be too anal either but i also get it.

"Oh, they're back." That had me crying 😂 Tom getting in some serious deep waters for this mission. It's admirable with that level of dedication, don't get me wrong, but I sort of agree with the authorities that the original vid would be an inspiration for some folks to try it out themselves. I know that Greg and Tom are responsible and _adults_ (with the added bonus of having a developed sense of risk and situation analysis ability), but it isn't certain that younger people have the same thorough thought process. On the other hand, I am sorry to see the original video taken down because Tom made it very clear that he and Greg didn't think it was an excellent idea in the first place and several times said not to copy their bad decisions. Overall, I think this re-upload with the explanation was a decent solution to a carppy conundrum.

I really like your straight-line series, but with your high profile I do think it's important to be responsible and set a good example. I am curious to see how you plan to approach this in future straight-line expeditions. Personally I wouldn't mind if you made an exemption for things like railway crossings, freeway crossings and such. You could walk right up to the edge, show that you *could* trivially have traversed it, then walk around to the nearest legal crossing without counting it as a deviation. It would take away a little, but I don't think it would hurt the essence of what you're doing.

I strongly advise against burning scrap lumber you find on your expeditions. It could be pressure treated and contain highly toxic chemicals that would be freed from the wood when burned. Older CCA wood for example contains lethal amounts of arsenic that would remain in the ashes, and the smoke and soot would be toxic as well. Very dangerous to people, and wildlife that may come into contact.

I can appreciate some of the comments - I'm old and gammy now, but used to do Geograph squares ( still on the all-time leaderboard ), and it took me to lots of places I would otherwise never go. Climbed lots of deer fences. got into tidal mud traps, on to MOD firing ranges ( tip - they knock off early on a Friday ) and strolled into an oil refinery as though I owned it. Remember feeling the possibility of unfriendly farmers, but less so if I was walking out of an area rather than just entering it. But I never got over a railway fence - not for the lack of wanting to.

I’m still shocked people actually said “with the pandemic happening and you guys touching (outside) fences and all”. Even during the earliest days of the pandemic, it was pretty obvious that it wasn’t transmissible via surfaces, not even to mentioned on single point on a fence on a huge ass farm. Kinda odd really.

People get fixated on the idea that they should be able to risk their own life, but it's worth remembering getting flattened by a train has a massive impact on a lot of other people. Family, friends, fans, the train driver, the clean up crew. I'd honestly respect the mission if you just went to the track, deviated to find the nearest legal crossing, and walked back to the line.
@chromasus9983

Indeed. It strikes a bit of a weird tone when Tom says how he wanted a line with excitement, but then says "oh, but the highways and railway tracks were not intended." It's always better to pick lines with more nature than civilization, I'd imagine. Something that has come to mind is that all the missions have been planned to be a horizontal line. That's perhaps easier on the GPS, but it limits options on the path quite a bit.
