When the american girl said "When i hear chemist i think of like a scientist" Thats exactly why we (uk) call it a chemist, because in the olden days they used to make the medice right there in the store, they would mix the ingredients and compress them in a pill machine. Everything was made to order. so the person who made them was an actual chemist, they needed to know how to mix the different chemicals. But in more recent times we also call it a pharmacy, just due to the fact that most of the younger generations (2,000's and up) use a lot of americanisms from watching a lot of american tv shows and films

Maybe it’s a generational thing or a regional thing, but I’ve always called it a chemist in Australia, I really only started saying pharmacy in the UK and call it a chemist when I’m in Aus. I would call athletic shoes, runners. Sneakers for like your everyday shoes you don’t exercise in, and runners for the ones you do (but also just calling all sneaker type shoes sneakers or runners). Thong underwear is called a g-string that’s how you differentiate between a thong for your foot and the underwear.

As an Australian, I would just like to say, that most Ozzies would call a "drug store" a Chemist! only sometimes a pharmacy! What you call candy is called Lollies here, which refers to all types of lollies not just jelly lollies, but we don't include chocolate in the lollie category, it's separate, it's just called chocolate!- And what you call a thong is called a G-string here! so then there is no confusion between your feet and your arse! hahaha

We have absorbed many things from many different cultures. It is often said that we are similar countries separated by a common language.

I don't know if it's entirely accurate to say that in the UK we all call what was shown chips, these days I feel like a lot of us call would call those fries because chips are chunkier than that, fish and chip shops sell chips, not fries, mcdonalds sells fries not chips, and to be fair, given her hesitation, I feel like she wanted to say that too but realised it was obviously set up for her to say chips lol

In South Africa we also call both crisps and chips/fries "chips"; but to differentiate, we call the hot ones/fries "slaptjips" (pronounced "slup-chips") because ours are thick and "slap", which means limp or floppy. :) And we call cotton candy either candy floss, like the Brits, or "spookasem", which means ghost breath!

Linguistic evolution seems to be happening quicker through social media. In the UK, we never used to hear 'drug through the mud', it would always be 'dragged'. But, I have heard a few younger people use 'drug' recently, so it's obviously slowly becoming accepted in the UK too.

I think that Pharmacy is becoming the more common name in the UK rather than Chemist. It always used to be Chemist, but I think as some of the bigger chains put the smaller independent chemists out of business, the word pharmacy has taken over. The largest is called Boots, and it always used to be called "Boots the Chemist", but they dropped "the Chemist" from their name and these days they describe themselves as a pharmacy. They are probably more like US Pharmacies, so you can buy make-up, toys, gifts, sandwiches, snacks, drinks etc., as well as medicine and healthcare items.

In the UK it's either cinema, the pictures or watch a film, depends what part of the UK you're from, I grew up using going to the pictures. In the UK it's either call them sandwich, sarni or butty. In the UK we use chemist or pharmacy.

Those aren’t chips, I’m British, those are skinny sticks of fried potato, those are Fries... chips are cut thicker... so here in England we have McDonalds/KFC/Burger King serving Fries, the chippy sells chips, the thin slices of potatoes fried, crispy & sold in a bag of varied flavours is Crisps. So here in the UK we have Chips, Fries and Crisps, they’re all fried potatoes but entirely different.

Another word Australians use for trainers is runners too. Never heard of joggers. In the UK the drug store is called a Pharmacy/Chemist. In UK, I call McDonalds, Maccy D's, but others say Mickie D's. I am from the North East UK, county Northumberland/Northumbria. But was born and raised in London.

Subscribed Aussie here, have been enjoying your content now for about a year. I agree, we are all unique in some areas but also similar in others. Australia is sort of in between American and the UK, maybe a little closer to the UK, but also we have our own spin on things too.

[ UK over 50, thinks why ask millennial's!? ] I would also call those French Fries. It is down to thickness. It there is no soft middle it's not a chip! 'Flip Flop' is from a brand, hence the US and UK agreeing. Which is technically a sandal in 'English'. Track-suit bottoms would be of old. 'butty' means literally buttered bread. A 'burger' is not a true sandwich in the UK due to the lack of butter, we call them 'burgers' no matter what McD's put on their menus! On the chemist thing, our chemists DID have to make their own medicines [ press pills, makes tinctures etc ], hence the name stuck. The picture of 'sweets' includes lollys or lolly-pops. [ anything sweet on a stick is either a lolly-pop or an ice-cream in the UK ]

Trolley can mean multiple things in British English. A cart, Mens underwear, To be off oyur trolley means you are doing something crazy. So a man pushing a shopping cart in just his underwear in the supermarket, Could be described as that bloke pushing the trolley in his trollies is off his trolley! We also have trolley bus which is like a bus that gets it's gets power from over head cables. This is different to a tram which runs on rails, a trolley bus has regular wheels and tyres.

Hello from The Atherton Tablelands, Far North Queensland. It's up a mountain range behind Cairns (which is pronounced like cans of drink). Life in Cairns is like living in a sauna. Without air-conditioning it's a form of cruel and unusual punishment. Up in the mountains we have a much cooler climate. We also have rainforests, waterfalls and rolling green hills. There plenty of places to see and things to do. But if you're visiting I'd recommend hiring a car. Because as a country area public transportation isn't the best. Also because it's a popular tourist destination, book ahead. But as Aussies the locals are friendly and we love our tourists, especially international ones. Also when people mispronounce Brisbane as Bris-Bane it grates on people's nerves. Like nails on a chalkboard (blackboard). It's not the bane of our existence, just call it Brissie like the locals. I was born in Brissie and lived there until I was 13. While it's true that you can buy alcohol at our pharmacies, they do sell our favourite jelly beans. Star burst did try selling their's in Australia, but they failed miserably. We call that type of underwear a G-string. Also, no matter what type of meat you is in it's still just a burger. We'd only call it a chicken sandwich if it was between two slices of bread.

In the olden days when I was in Primary school we called it going to pictures or picture theatre.Service station comez from 50s and 60s.when an attendant woukd serve you the petrol( gas] ask if wanted to.check oil and water plus tyres.They often had a mechanic workong there.Often would clean your windscreen.Women used to prefer.Thise service stations are gone but still call servixe station or Servo.

I'm Irish, I'll tell you what we pronounce differently....... 6:24 - Runners 7:06 - Tracksuit Bottoms (generally) 7:30 - Garage (ga-ridge) and no it doesn't get confused with a garage for parking or for fixing cars, context is key. 8:05 - The Pictures or Cinema. Pictures comes from the early days of video, Moving Pictures, I think that's were Movies comes from as well. Why do Americans say "I saw Spiderman in theatres"? Why is it plural? How many theatres did you see it in?!!. 9:18 - Phone or Mobile.......the other is house phone or landline 10:24 Isn't a Trolley a Tram in the US? Why does she called it an above ground train? I'm thinking San Fransisco trams, a single carriage on tracks. I could be wrong. 11:55 - We say fringe. The reason you say bangs is because if you cut a horses tail straight across it's called a Bang Tail. Someone on Reddit told me that a few months ago and it's the only explanation that makes sense.

The chips thing depends on how old you are and where you live. I have rarely heard them called hot chips but I am also not surprised if they are called that. When I lived in China we put photos of potato chips and potato crisps (the thin slice) on the menu so people could point to what they wanted. I just called them by their Chinese name as that wasn't confusing at all.

The Royal Navy has picked up much vernacular and transported it to far flung places. Sweets, candy and lollies in the RN are called nutty. Lolly is a term to describe condensed soup. So condensed it is hard. Stores for years. Mixed with water, it makes a broth fed to sick and injured sailors. By a surgeons assistant called a Loblolly boy. I can imagine this going to Australia with the convict ships and over time evolving.

NZ - chips and chips. We understand context. Flip flops / thongs - jandals. Brand name, if i recall. That pretty much became the item's name.

In the uk we would say home phone or landlines.

Aussie would call the knickers G-string not a thong. My understanding the term thongs is accurate to the definition of the origin of the word thong. Lollies is the all encompassing term used commonly. If you were being super specific the hard boiled are candies sugar or candy and soft might be called jellies. Chocolates can also be included when being broad.

A thong in Oz is called a G-string or a G-banger for its slang term.

Late to the party again but I've just recently found your channel and am catching up on videos. The term thongs for flip flops is probably a generational thing in the US. In the 60s we also called them thongs. Then when the under garments known as thongs came along, they began to be called flip flops. That's all I call them now. Sandwiches, at least in my area, are called sammies. Also, I think it's pretty standard just about everywhere in the US to call a bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich a BLT.

When i fill my car up with gas it is not always petrol I am putting in - it is often LPG (auto propane). My car is dual fuel so I can have a tank of LPG and a tank of petrol.

Technically British English is at least 3 different forms of English. You have obviously English that is spoken in England, Ulster English that is spoken in Scotland and Cornish English that is spoken in Cornwall, England. The main differences between these forms of English are mainly differences in words and influences e.g. Cornwall has more Celtic influence than the rest of England and Scotland has little to no Norman influence as the Normans never conquered Scotland.

In Leicestershire in the UK we call a sandwich a cob, though only certain types of sandwiches. I've adopted the Australian Maccas, because I think it sounds better and Maccies sounds childish.

"Chips" is reserved for actual chips, thick chips, what was shown would also be called "fries" over here. And a sandwich is also called a "butty", as well as what she said. There are multiple names for a sandwich, depending on where you are in the UK. I, personally, would say "butty" before the word "sarnie" would come to mind.

Not many people have home phones/landlines anymore so we say that a lot less.
