For those who read the info, bonus! Look at the Tower light on the right side, along with a crew riding it, you can see the light is red. This signifies there is an inbound current. when it flashes either red or green it means the water is flowing 3MPH or better! Green means outbound current, yellow means neutral current. Very important to know for the ships.

Having seen several of your videos in the past, I was finally able to experience the Duluth canal in person on May 17 and 18 (2024). We camped at the Lakehead Boat Basin marina about three blocks south of the bridge and toured the museum and watched the Stewart J Cort make its first run of the season into Duluth for fuel and ore loading, sporting a brand new paint job. The entire area is well worth the visit.

Awesome! I hope the whole visit was a great time! Catching the Cort was a huge bonus for you, normally this ship does not come to Duluth but 2 or 3 times a season.

Hi, Paul. Watching this it occurred to me that the economic impact of the bridge not being able to rise would be incredible. The closest Harbors that might be able to handle the traffic probably would be Thunder Bay, Marquette or Escanaba. All three have problems. Thunder Bay would have border problems, naturally. Marquette and Escanaba, while they could probably handle most of the shipping, have rail infrastructure issues. It's a good thing they got the bridge issues delt with. Thanks for the details you provided in this video.

There is another entrance to the south. The bridge is the access to the long peninsula that ends at the north side of the south passage.

Superior entry , which requires tourists to go for miles and miles along Moccasin Mike road, is next to several loading docks, The Duluth canal has more show biz appeal, horn salutes, Tourists, Announcers, popcorn, etc.

I believe they maintain speed so to enable proper steering. Yeah, sometimes they are really hauling, not sure what the speed limit is.

It seems the more familiar with the canal is, the ships cruise in a little quicker,
@PaulScinocca
@PaulScinocca Ай бұрын
I think the "speed limit" is under the terms of what is deemed safe by the captain. The fastest I've seen one cruise through the canal was about 10 kts.

Paul, have you seen the news about the ship Michipicoten struck something and took on water south of Isle Royal? There is Coast Guard present there. No one was hurt.

I read something from a knowledgeable local, who says there are shoals in that area, and it requires a ship to be very diligent not to stray out of the deep passage. This it was said will all come out when the ship bottom is inspected in drydock.

Turns out they didn't hit anything. It was a hull failure. 13ft crack a quarter inch wide. The loud bang the crew heard was likely the sudden crack happening. They're extremely lucky they got to port etc and the crack was not in a critical space. Unfortunately for a boat of that age, it doesn't look good for their future.

@@peterjensen6844 Yeah, I think she's seen her last voyage. When she left Duluth last month and the cameras recorded how she looked it was apparent to me that she'd seen better days. That ship was beat up!

Just curious, Do these ships have any type of braking system? Sounds like stupid question but what if there a problems with bridge upon ship approach?
@PaulScinocca
@PaulScinocca Ай бұрын
Great question. They can drop anchors, throw the prop(s) in reverse. The reason the do the 1.5 mile call for the lift, is precisely for that reason. If there is a bridge failure, at that distance they can easily turn off.

So how big of tide is there?
@kevinduveneck1504
@kevinduveneck1504 Ай бұрын
There really are no tides on the Great Lakes
@PaulScinocca
@PaulScinocca Ай бұрын
Not really a tide, they call it a seiche (a temporary disturbance or oscillation in the water level of a lake or partially enclosed body of water, especially one caused by changes in atmospheric pressure.), we are talking inches of water level change, more of a direction of water change from the harbor to lake.
