He REALLY likes cymbals. And they're probably the most individually interesting thing on the kit, toms, snares, and bass drums can be really cool, but in general it's just very minor differences between mid-tier and high tier kits that only really start to matter when your listening for those differences. He's shown you can make complete crap drums work, but crap cymbals just don't, they really have to be a competently made piece of engineering for them to sound any good.

if anyone's wondering, an easy way to stop a crack from spreading on literally anything is to drill a big honkin hole centered right at the end of that crack, so the drill is taking half crack and half healthy material. That should give it enough relief to keep it in one piece until you get to removing the entire damaged bit.

right, i loan my drums out to a friend in the 1970s. and he cracked my 18 inch paiste formula 602. instead of paying for it, he took it to t he high school machine shop and drilled a hole right above the crack. the cymbal sounded dead and i was out of 90 buck for that cymbal. 90 buck was a lot of money in 1973, just saying. the moral of the story is, never loan out anything that is dear to you. just grow some and say no. if he is offended, then he was never your friend in the first place.

For steel race car panels, I'd drill a 5mm hole about 8-10mm ahead of the visible end of the crack. the crack will exist beyond its visible end and you want to stop it in its tracks, and give it a nice radius to spread the stress out. let it make its own way to the hole dont drill too close.

I tricked my boss into letting me work 2nd shift in the machine shop, so sometimes I do fun things with my dead cymbals. Wet grinders are great for getting those cracks out, and then you can hit it with a pencil grinder and finish it up on the buffing wheel or use a cratex buffing wheel on the pencil grinder for small holes. I've also experimented a little with rehammering and turning thicker cymbals down on the lathe.

I play crash cymbals on a drumline, and the senior who taught me when I joined broke two two cymbals over his 3 seasons on the line. One fascinating thing about marching crashes is that when they are worn and close to cracking, they’ll start to invert when struck too hard. When a crack would appear, he’d keep playing them until it didn’t sound good, then he broke the cracked portion off and declared them dead. He then used the two broken cymbals to display pictures on at his grad party 😂

I've got an 80's era Zildjian A Medium crash with a little triangle cut that sounds like nothing's changed, and an 18" A China Boy with a radial crack in one of the grooves that I did a slot cut on, and it sounds great! Just as China-ry as it was before, but a bit more trashy (and I think louder too). I wish I could have saved my 17" Z Custom Medium crash, that I drilled to stop a crack and it didn't work so I drilled it twice more (when the crack tree-branched off) and eventually it just lost a chunk that fell off. I loved that cymbal.

been repairing cracked cymbals for ages, my favorite way to do it is a drill press with a hole saw bit made for tiles. basically you can't "cut" holes, you have to "sand" or "wear" the hole/cut the lines. one studio record my old drummer used crack repaired crashes and ride. middle/throat cracks carefully repaired so as not to lose any edge wash/etc. like reilley's are the absolute best, it basically just changes the length of the note on an already very heavy/short noted part of the cymbal anyway.
