What a journey you've had- and are still having. You seem like a very strong person. You'll get the hang of Vietnam. You've just been there a short while. Hang in there! Cheering you on from Norway!

In a similar boat as you. Viet Kieu Vancouverite from humble backgrounds. Worked hard, saved up money and realized as I was saving, the requirement for a down payment kept going up and up. It's disheartening. Decided to leave Vancouver as well but opted for Bangkok instead of Vietnam. There was just a lot more content out there about expats in Thailand that it gave me more confidence to take the leap even though I speak Vietnamese (worse than you though I admit). Anyways thanks for sharing your journey through it all. It's eye opening and I appreciate how vulnerable and open you are in sharing this. Keep it up!

Dịch: I hope you will understand this comment. I'm a Viet live in Saigon . I started to watch your video about 4 month ago. In this video, I want to tell you something. For the choice you made to life in vietnam is totally normal for vietnamese like us, I think your family have their own story that make them think the way they thought about your living here in vietnam. Right now, the mind set of vietnamese people is like "if you're a vietkieu, you're next level, and VIP to us", that mean you'll have more privileges than normal people. Often vietkieu will have the hightest job offer, being CEO, manager, basically knowing English give you a head up in the competition. So don't worry about how to get a job or money in vietnam. The reason that make you feel different than a white guy who want to live in vietnam is because you already know too much about vietnamese culture, you've live your whole life as a viet and you have family in vietnam, not because you're alone in this journey. You get too much help and infomation, so that make you lazy to feel around, to make discover on your own. Try living like tourist for a few months, go out and explore, enjoy your time in here. Nobody rush you to become a viet in vietnam, to become a Saigonese in just 1 or 2 month. Just relax. Send you all the best wishes, and hope to seeing you on more video from now. Chào mừng anh về Việt Nam.

You need to give Vietnam a couple of years more to know whether it will be home. I am hopeful for you. Truly I am. By then you would have some friends, got used to the mosquitoes, bathing four times a day; your Vietnamese would have improved significantly; you would already know where the water is and where your food should come from. Things should look up. Its early days yet, don't you agree? In time you will love Vietnam. 😊 God Bless.

Hey man, I'm really inspired by your motivation. I definitely think it makes it 1000x harder to make the move to Vietnam as a Vietnamese in terms of the pressure from family and friends. I've been wanting to take a gap year to Vietnam to study our language at a local Uni for quite a while, but a part of me always felt like I'd be judged by the Vietnamese friends and family for wanting to live there to study Vietnamese, cause "why didn't you already learn from your parents?" Your videos definitely motivate me to pursue the things I've always wanted to do. I hope that your inspirational attitude can be a source of motivation for you to continue with your dreams. Thanks for the video, cheers.

Honestly, I didn’t have the same experience as you despite sharing a similar background story and I can only read, not even really write. I’ve been following you since before my first couple trips back, I’ll be living vicariously through your channel so do keep us posted 🙌 my advice is try Da Nang after you get bored of hcmc

I was in way worse living conditions when I moved to HK. 400 sq ft illegal rooftop 3-bedroom subdivided flat with 13 tenants with no Aircon in my shared room. Even though that place was crappy I was happy as I was no longer in Canada. My friend also told me I need to "waste" two years of my life to get settled in HK and he was right. Pretty soon I got into the HK flow and it quickly became my permanent home.

Dear Peter, It’s An Nguyễn. I’m a child of my beloved hometown Saigon. Currently I’m living in the States. I spent my first over 20 years there, I truly understand and sympathize what you share with us. It’s hard to express everything in a minute. However, fleeing from home might be the only way Vietnamese people could think of to escape the misery, change their lives (đổi đời) when they feel themselves powerless, unable to fix the problems in homeland.

My mom's from there. She will finally go back and stay for a month. She hasn't been there since the war and she was about 12 years old at the time. I will travel there one day just to see it for myself since I'm half. I love to travel so I really want to see what it's like. I know everything has changed since my mom lived there.

He keeps going on about how white people are privilaged which is such are crude and reducative point of view. The only "white privilage" you're gonna get in Vietnam is a special menu in restaurants with everything double or triple the price 😂

Just be careful with those scam, they are every where and I lived in CA Orange County for 37 years and I am thinking to retire early as 50 years old and move back to Nha Trang and Pattaya to retire early and enjoy my life. I have life in America event I came here when I was 14 years old. Life is always on a fast pace and people are rude. Crimes and prices are increasing everyday. Just don't give up on your dream and choose the place to live and make you happy. Hopefully, I will get a chance to meet for a coffee in Sept or Oct of this year. Just be careful and make the best out of it. Good luck to you in Vietnam.

No matter of you was born in silver or plastic spoon. All babies have the same path is going to school, focus at your best , just don't give up. In Canada your parents can not abuse you in any ways. What made you dropped school ? Stop blaming, you love free like a bird you don't love following rules, timings, framed works? Writing is freedom, telling stories for kids, communication with kids in English is different from teaching English them.

Get mozzie spray if you got bitten so much. Letting yourself get bitten for a few days is crazy. You should feel grateful you have family in a strange country. Do more research next time you move. Take some Vietnamese lessons and stop telling yourself you don’t speak it so well. Make your content a bit less pessimistic and show us more of the positive thing you experienced. It’ll change your mindset. I’m sorry you were told to go home. But if you don’t know what you are doing in Vietnam, to those people may be Canada is better. You should also deal with your depression. I know it so well i hear myself saying everything you are saying in your videos. Gym and socialising is a good start. If you don’t have friends and feel lonely, we can be friends. I know there are so many kind and friendly Vietnamese people who would love to work with you, hang out with you and make your life here more positive.

3:22 why are you in Vietnam? This is true. I am a westerner living in South East Asia and Vietnamese have literally asked me: why are do you want to live in Vietnam? Why do you like Vietnam so much? Us Vietnamese want to move to a western country. To me I love South East Asia and I can only be happy in Asia, the West has lost its charm for me. Dude, where to buy food? How to buy food? That is basic common sense. One thing is true that the business landscape in Vietnam is tough even for Viet Kieus, therefore for foreigners as in westerners is way harder. There are some success stories but a lot of people have lost a lot of money. I also heard that the feelings of Vietnamese towards Viet kieus is a love/hate kind of thing. Make your money in a Western country and move to Vietnam, Cambodia or Thailand where the cost of living is only 20% of what you normally pay in a western country. A lot of people think you just open a business and start printing money… not true! You can easily spend 200K USD and you may never see your money again.
