• Rudbeckia - black eyed...
Aechmea fasciata is known as "the beginner bromeliad" because of it's low maintenance nature.
In this video I cover how bromeliads grow in the wild, and how this knowledge can help you keep your "house bromeliad" as happy as can be!
I also cover propagation. A bromeliad will only flower once, and often around the same time, it will start to produce "pups" or mini clones of itself to carry on its legacy. I explain how to go about propagating these pups so that you can have as many bromeliad babies as you please!
Unfortunately I didn't have a visual for the pups - my bromeliad is taking its sweet time to produce pups. Each bromeliad is different, just like us! I eagerly await this stage, but for now, I will enjoy the wide-banded leaves and the spiky, unique inflorescence!
As always, thank you for watching. Tell your plant friends about me!
Love,
Plantspeak

My Mama plant initially created 3 pups. After they were removed and repotted, she's now got 5 more that I'm going to remove. 8 pups so far is incredible for 1 Mama. I purchased her last October.

Hi! In a perfect world I would have included that in the video. But it just so happens that i finally have a pup growing out of this plant ! It took a whole year but it happened. My goal is to make a video when I replant the pup when it’s big enough. I’m currently documenting photos of its growth. Thanks for making this request! And stay tuned :).

Oh great!! I’m glad the video was useful for you. How long did it take your pup to show up after the flowers emerged? I am STILL waiting for pups- hence the lack of pup photo presence 😂.

I filled the tank, changed out water, then it rotted out. Not fun at all. I'm trying the aechmea Perez, love it's black leaves.

Hi there! Sorry to hear . How often did you change out the water? And what kind of water did you use? What sort of soil or substrate did you use? I’m always curious!

great video! my bract was covered in spider mites - and I just removed (the bract was browning anyway) there are a few mites on the leaves - should i neem oil spray and put plant back to try to grow a pup or is the plant not going to make it at this point? thank you!
@plantspeak7117
@plantspeak7117 Жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you ! Good question. Spider mites are so tricky to get rid of sometimes. If you have other plants …. Definitely get it away from them because spider mites like to travel. I would recommend spraying it with an insecticide solution or a neem spray yes. And keep your eye on it , you might need to repeat spray. If the interior leaves start browning or get webs that would be the point (for me) to toss it. Outer leaves browning and drying up as pups are produced is normal! Good luck !!!

This is the same type of Bromeliad I have. I got it on sale at Pike Nursery. I wish I had watched this video first, because I thought the white stuff on the leaves was dust and wiped away some of its trichomes 😭 I hope I didn't ruin it.

Thanks for the video, I bought a plant without a flower, the flower has withered, and there are no pups, I think they took them in the flower shop, will the plant release new pups if it has already bloomed once
@plantspeak7117
@plantspeak7117 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it will release the pups after the flower is gone - be patient ! It can take up to a year for them to come out . I kept minimally watering mine and I also cut off my flower and I just got a pup a year later !

I had no idea i was supposed to like… keep water in the “tank”? I thought they didnt like water? Hm.

Hi👋. As long as the plant is mature and has that center tube, you can! Some people swear by it. But you also don’t *have* to. I’ve had one for four years now. The flowering stage is complete and I cut it off at the base, stopped putting water in the tank and it’s fine. It’s in a well lit but north facing room. It is just starting to push a pup out of the base.
