Hi Jeri! The maternal instinct is quite a force! We had a broody hen a few years ago. We set a couple duck eggs under her. We didn't have a rooster so ... Prudence was a proud mama...to a Peking drake. Prudence used to get so upset when her baby, which had no familial resemblance anyway, started swimming in the duck ponds. Prudence was desperate to keep her baby out of the water! You can't keep a duck out of water! After a while Prudence gave up and just looked at Dennis as a bit odd and his attraction to water was just a birth defect. "Nobody's perfect". All went well for about a year and when Dennis matured into a handsome and determined drake! He became amorous...much to the dismay of the hens in the yard. They were all Black Ameracaunas and he was a white Peking. He ignored the other ducks in the yard and chased after the chickens. They, needless to say, were not at all flattered. They would say, " I don't think so...you are short, fat, ugly, and your mama dresses you funny"! Bless his heart...I guess Dennis just died of a broken heart. Or maybe one of the hens had enough and offed him one night...But we have not given any broody hens a duck egg since. And I can't wait to see your new Hopalong Hollow Emporium!

There is a bumblebee hummingbird. I live in So California and saw a vagrant one from Mexico while I was hiking. It flew within inches of my face and I thought I was going to get stung by the biggest bumblebee on Earth. While still in front of my face, it turned sideways and I saw feathers. What a lovely surprise.

There’s very little that’s sweeter than mama hens and baby chicks. I’ve got a broody hen too that sat so faithfully and now we hear the sweetest little peeps coming from underneath her wing. As soon as we get near her she nudges it under and plops down to protect it. As if I could harm that precious baby! 😊

Your little hen and her adopted chicks are so sweet. I loved seeing them all huddled around her during the rain and one taking a step further. The Hudson Seed Company would be fortunate to have you art on their packets. They really should commission you!

That was me!!!!!😁 I knew you would love The Hudson Bay Seed Company - but I still really think you ought to submit some of your art to be put on one of their seed packets!!!! The Fried Green Tomatoes looked delicious! And I don't even like tomatoes!!! They are just too acidic for me (& always make my mouth break out in cancer sores!😕). I absolutely love growing them though & usually have so many that I can't find enough people to even give them away to. So I may have to try recipe this year just to make use of them. Speaking of recipes....I am really excited about your emporium & hope to see your illustrated Cookbook in there soon!!!!

I loved your little broody hen, Jeri! When I lived in Northern NY, I had a small farm that had a small horse barn that my eclectic mix of critters lived in, amongst them, chickens and turkeys. Well one day I discovered that two of the turkeys had stuffed themselves into a small horse trough and to my surprise a few weeks later what did appear? Not turkeys, but three chicks...a Barred Rock, an Americana and a mix of the two! It always amazed me that those huge turkeys never crushed those eggs, given the tiny bit of space they had. They made good mama's even if they were turkeys!

It’s so refreshing to see such beauty, and yo see and here the animals and birds. I can’t go outdoors where I live because of all the smoke. It’s even seeping into the house and it looks like it will continue for some time. I love the hen and her chics. She’s really taken to them, hasn’t she. So sweet.

Love the little chicks and momma too right to them. You garden is looking glorious. I could definitely hear the bees sounds so sweet. I just spent two days working in my flowerbeds in my courtyard in my pots so rewarding but now it’s so smoky here in Northern California can’t go out because of my ability to get asthma from the smoke. Love fried green tomatoes. Use to live in Kentucky and they were served in restaurants there. So good with cornmeal. The fried green tomatoes are so good!!

I love this and how you helped Demelza have her chicks. I think it is wonderful. ( I would only have preferred the sounds of her and the chicks over the singing.) Where I live I use music to drown out the noise of cars and shooting. ( I live near a shooting range).. Your natural sounds are the best... still I loved watching it.. Your home is amazing and all your gardens are truly a work of art as you are of course, a hard working artist for sure!

This is the stuff of dreams from the children's books I once enjoyed. And they offer a touch of magic, (which was taboo for me when I was mentally trapped in a well-known cult). Now that I'm free, i fully indulge that magic and can't imagine that for 30 years, I had to secretly enjoy these things. Wish I could fully blame the cult, but I ignored my own suspicions.
