Hi, I have a tip for knowing when your bobbin is low. When you wind a bobbin, wind 2 and put one where your spool goes. Use that to thread the top of the machine and it will run out at the same rate as the one in the bottom. You might need to put a spool or something on top of it, to keep it from jumping around. Thanks for your videos, I've been quilting a long time but I love your enthusiasm and it never hurts to see and hear someone else's point of view.

OMG... why didn't someone tell me about doing this before now. I'm in a Facebook group for quilters and sewers and people always complain about running out of bobbin on the most difficult part and not knowing until you think you're done and then you want to cry. So THANK YOU SO MUCH.

I do this as I always have more wound bobbins that spools of certain colors. Glad to know I am not the only one. I did recommend this on the QM's follow-up video as I did not see your post. I usually watch on my smart tv - great viewing, but cannot leave comments.

I am trying to understand this. If you do this, the top thread won't have near as much thread on it as a large spool or cone. So, you'd be changing thread very often?

I worked in the casual indoor/outdoor furniture business in the cushion department for 20 years and my boss taught me a trick about adjusting tensions I had never heard of in my previous 15 years in the loungewear and drapery industry. Take a scrap of fabric and fold it over to the thickness you will be sewing. The stitches should look the same on the top and bottom. If you have to adjust the tension it is opposite from the side that is not right. If the bottom thread is too tight or loose you adjust the top tension. If the the top is the problem you adjust the tension on the bottom. Even if you are sewing the same type of fabric you might have to readjust your tension. Some times bobbins wear out or become warped. And even thread on a cone can have a different twist to the thread when it is spun. Sometimes we would get in a case of thread that wouldn't sew in the needle without breaking so we had to use it in the bobbins. I hope this helps someone out.

Besides being cheaper than its Juki counterparts, this machine has pin feed which is patented to Brother and which helps for feeding some difficult fabrics such as velvet through evenly at top and bottom. That might not be so relevant to quilters, but very useful for garment sewing if you start getting adventurous. Great that you love yours!

My first machine given to me from my parents when I started Home Ec.in 1973, was a Brother. I still have it and it runs great!!! I LOVE BROTHER. I have had a Singer and there is nothing like BROTHER.I have a few and 2 Brother embroidery machines and 1 serger that is a BROTHER. I have an industrial super fast Bernina and have chosen the use of all my BROTHERS rather than it. It has not had much use for 25 yrs. I need to start using it though. But I was just explaining how happy I am with BROTHER. They should hire me to sell. LOL Deb in GA.

Hi! I just purchased this sewing machine and some of my subscribers have mentioned that you had one too, so OF COURSE I had to come over and check out your channel and sure enough, you had a review about the machine. 😊 Thank you for the review and I promise that I will read my sewing manual, haha. I haven't used the knee bar yet, because I'm going to order a sewing table, (the Gidget 2) and I figured I would put the bar on once I get it set onto its correct table.

I have had this machine for about 5 years and even read the manual and only learned from you about the presser foot pressure dial and feed dog height feature. As for bobbins I have always felt the same way, there should be an alarm, but now I thread 4 or 5 bobbins at a time. I have been looking at a Juki but like you I mainly straight stitch so I will save my money and buy more fabric, yeh

Great Review. Love the bobbin thread coloring trick and never heard about the color matching in all the other videos I have watched about this machine. I just ordered this today. Can't wait, it is supposed to be delivered Wednesday. I am hoping I am able to use the machine to free motion quilt a queen top that I have just finished piecing. I will be trying to get some practice in as I also put a Brother Dream Fabric Frame on layaway today that I intend to use with this machine. Tomorrow is my 66th birthday so I decided to treat myself. Thanks.

Great review and one that helped me to decide to ask for this machine for Christmas even though I have MANY sewing machines. Regarding the bobbin out issue, I have several OLD sewing machines (some vintage, some antique) and none of them tell me when the bobbin is running out. So I've made it a rule to always check the bobbin before I start to sew and, if necessary, put a full one in the machine when I start something new. Then I check it whenever I stop sewing. One other thing about the bobbin case, holding out the small lever will hold IN the bobbin (helpful when you are trying to tip it to replace it in the machine). To get the bobbin out of the case, allow it to retract flush. That's why you had trouble getting it out of the case (so you are NOT "butterfingers").

Ok, mine comes in Saturday I can't wait. I have a super king quilt that I've been fighting with on a small baby lock which is good for piecing. I watched many videos on three specific machines and decided on this Brother PQ1500SL. I've been sewing since about 5 that would have be 58 years.. most of my sewing was on a singer treadle/electric, so I should be able to slide right into this machine. Oh and I want to meet your wife, she must be one cool lady 😎. Thank you for your videos and input on this machine, can't wait for mine to get here.....I like to sew as fast as I ride 😊 and drive. 🙏 Blessings to you both!

Thanks for your review! I am looking to upgrade my Brother LX 3125 since I'm entering the world of quilting (previously just been sewing bags and costumes etc.). Finding a non-computer machine with a wide enough throat leaves people with few options these days. I enjoy sewing to get away from screens and tiny windows and error messages, all of that. I just want to create and be in charge of the machine, not the other way around. I also want to thank you for not being so consumed by what society says a man can and can not do, sewing/quilting is for every one, not just old ladies.

Great videos...thank you. Almost bought a baby lock jazz machine which is similar to this brother except it does not stop in the needle down position!!! Not exactly sure what their thinking is there but that was an absolute dealbreaker for me. Then I discovered the brother PQ 1500 SL and just had to have it. Here in Canada it costs $1400-$1500 but I got it on a Black Friday special for. $800. I love it so far but the very first thing I did was add a light to it. Sewing machine manufacturers really need to raise the bar with regards to the lighting. I think the knee lift is great… I use it all the time. Besides the very poor lighting, another issue is I find the automatic thread cutter cuts the threads too short, especially the bobbin thread. I did notice in your video that you only have two threads going behind the horizontal bar at the front of the machine when there should be three - not sure if that would affect the sewing at all. And many thanks to the person who commented on putting a mark on the bobbin thread so you all know when you’re close to running out. I am going to do that every time I wind a bobbin using a washable marker… Great tip

I have owned a Brother PQ1500S for about 9 years and it is my most frequently used machine for sewing (the only different feature you have in your PQ1500SL is that you have better lighting). This machine is a fantastic sewing machine! it is the machine anyone who does straight stitch only or free motion quilting will want to have. Once one starts using a machine with a presser-foot-knee lift one would never want to have a machine without one.This machine is so well made it will last for a long time. This is a machine loved by many quilters, garment sewers, costume shops, bridal shops. alteration shops, tailoring shops and craft sewers.

I just bought this machine for myself for Christmas. I have barely used it at this point because I just set it up last night however my biggest complaint about this machine is the light is terrible. Other than that I am liking my new machine. I took the knee lever off because I'm doing this on my kitchen table and I don't want to damage my table with that knee lover so I am careful about that. Thanks so much for the video!

Hi Mark, I am a recent subscriber, but I wanted to tell you that I learned to sew on a Brother machine my mother had. I still use a Brother machine . I made good use of it when my children were small, clothes bought in stores were way too big on my oldest son . I had to make most of his clothes since nothing fit him.When he was born, they cut preemie diapers in half to fit him. He weighed 3lbs 7 1/2 ozs at birth and stayed small . He is 42 now and weighs less than 100 lbs, still shops in the Boys department of stores.

I like your review. I also just got the same machine at an auction. I few things didn't come with it, but that's ok. I started using it right away for testing out. Wow, it sews fantastic, very smooth. I am making a quilt so I finished sewing all pieces together and started using the quilting free motion foot and long behold was having the bottom get all messed up like a birds nest. Could not for the life of me figure out what was wrong, dusted, cleaned and oil the machine, still same issue. BTW I have been sewing for 40 plus years. So I was taking it to a repair shop and they told me to feed the bobbin thread to the left, then we tested it out and sew perfectly. When I got home was doing the quilting again was sewing great then all of a sudden it was messing up like before. I turned the machine on to its side to thoroughly look at the bobbin area. There was thread that was behind the bobbin that I could barely see, took it out. Started sewing again, within a few minutes bobbin was messed up again. I had the feed dogs down during the free motion quilting, this is what I do on my other machines. So then I experimented on putting the feed dogs up and using the different thickness levers. To my surprise no more bobbins issues. Do you any issues with the bobbin when the feeds dogs are down?

They could add a “feet travelled” indicator. It could count up when you load the bobbin and count down as you sew. I like to load two bobbins at the start though, so I don’t know how the machine would know whether I fully loaded the bobbins the same :)

I see you have tall spools of thread on your machine. I have nearly 20 standard sized spools of beautiful, expensive Gutermann threads -- yes, I'm a thread snob. Will this machine accept standard spools also? ThanQ for your review! I enjoyed your video & love that you're a REAL MAN that also quilts! I have had lots of brother machines Love the brand, work horses. I make t shirt quits, do you have enough room in the throats for: size full, batting, backing, t shirts? Also, can you show how much room there is with a rolled up section. Hard to tell on camera

i just ordered this machine and as you said i was looking at the Juki but for the same quality I thought this was more affordable. Now i have seen this exact machine for $1100.00 at a sewing shop. So what if they train you on it and has 2 cleaning with it. I don't think the extra $600.00 is worth paying for. I hope I can get used to the manual tension. I now have a Singer patchedworks and it served its purpose. I am a new quilter and I cant wait to get it. I usually get buyers remorse but thank you for the review. i feel better.

I just bought mine a few weeks ago. It's has to be the best work horse. Only issue is the bobbin compartment. Once my machine was placed in sewing cabinet and bobbin needs replacing, it's a tight squeeze. My bobbin case actually slid into and under and behind my machine housing. It has a space where there should be none for bobbin case to slide in to. Took me an hour and some long tweezers with 2 way tape to coax it out. The bobbin area needs improving or I will have to lift up machine each time I change bobbin. Crazy

I felt the same way. Wanted a Juki but got this for 200.00 less and oh my gosh, this is an awesome machine. I was trying to free motion on my little Baby Loc Elizabeth. Not a good machine to do that with. That's better for garment stitching with its fancy stitches. Straight stitch is the way to go for free motion. And I'm cracking up what you said about the bobbin thread. I have the same issues. Sewed the whole length of a quilt binding and found out my bobbin thread was out. NOOOOOOOO! Did yours come with a felting gadget too? That's something I know nothing about. Your awesome.

The Quilting Marine It’s nothing for a quilter to get excited about. Oh my gosh. I never read that in my manual that you set the pressure foot tension to color coordinate with the markings by the feed dog lever. Apparently I don't read instruction either.

Right??!! I was totally lusting for a Juki TL2010Q, but today I've seen a couple of reviews of this Brother machine I've never heard of, which has virtually all the same functionality. As of Apr14-2018, the Juki costs Cdn$1200 vs. this Brother at CDN$728. Wha-a-a-a??!! That is a 65% difference in pricing!! No contest. Now I will start saving seriously for this Brother PQ1500SL, and have a feeling this will be my "reward myself" gift for 2018. (I just have a couple of goals to achieve before I feel I deserve it and can justify the expense). Then I'll be able to start seriously getting into free motion quilting, and I can finally FMQ my quilt tops and get them finished. Oh, I feel like a whole new world will open up to me! Thanks for this review, Quilting Marine. I'll have to Subscribe to your YT channel and check out some of your other vids. ~Diana from Toronto

It's $1500 in Canada. I do appliqué so not the best for me unfortunately as I need zigzag. But I do like the speed. It has no reverse so how do u back stitch on it? Love ur videos, keep them coming

Can you free motion quilt on this machine?

You can usually tell when the bobbin is running low based upon how curly the threads are after you do your stitch.

Agree, also the 'sound' changes. Just need to tune your ear to the machine and you will hear the difference. A bobbin sensor will increase the price of this machine. Have owned this machine for many years and it's such a delight to use. Makes the best buttonholes too!

I asked this on another of your videos but I guess you didn't see it. I see you have a taller thread-the black one cone shape. Is this used on your quilts and is it cotton? I would like to use the taller ones but was told they were for embroidery. I'm a quilter only. Thanks

Quick question, I find my Brother PQ1500SL is wonderful, but sometimes the thread seems to gap in tension at the large hook and at the small hook above the needle and comes tangled and unthreaded. I know it's a tension issue, but I can't seem to figure it out! Any suggestions?

Thank you for the great review. I was looking at purchasing to Juki 2010q - but its so expensive! I’m definitely considering this machine now. Does it have speed control?
@TheQuiltingMarine
@TheQuiltingMarine 6 жыл бұрын
The speed is controlled by the pedal. There isn't any switch to go from slow to fast. All in all it is a great machine for less money for sure.
