CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Sam (Tobey Maguire) asks Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal) if he slept with Grace while he was fighting in Afghanistan.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Jim Sheridan's film, adapted from Susanne Bier's 2004 movie, concerns Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire), a Marine who receives orders to ship out for yet another tour of duty in Afghanistan. But before he leaves his supportive wife, Grace (Natalie Portman), and his two elementary-school-age daughters, Sam picks up his black sheep brother, Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal), who has finished a prison stretch for robbing a bank. While overseas, Sam's aircraft gets shot down and he's thought dead. Back home, irresponsible Tommy gets his act together in order to be an anchor for Grace and the girls, and the two grow emotionally -- though not physically -- close. As the family finally begins to make peace with their grief, soldiers rescue POW Sam and he returns home. Sam's experiences overseas have caused him such emotional turmoil, he has a difficult time adjusting to civilian life, and soon his fear and paranoia manifest themselves in the form of jealousy for his brother's relationship with his wife. Sam Shepard and Mare Winningham co-star as the brothers' father and stepmother.

“I could forgive you.” He says it like it’s a warning. Either tell him now, and he’ll try to see something in it, or let him find out on his own and deal with whatever comes next. Tommy tried laughing it off at first, and that is literally the biggest red flag there is when someone is lying. Laughing and turning your head away are the 2 most direct signs of lying.

Women are interested in reassurance and safety of their lifestyle, silence isn't the way there. it's painful to watch Tommy laugh. His reason, while disappointing, is understandable. He must feel awful to some degree because him and grace started to go down that path. A kiss while not as serious as sleeping with each other still meant something to a degree, and Tommy treated it like a joke. Sam was, at this point. completely understanding. I imagine sad, despite that very sweet smile, but understanding.

On one hand, we can assume he is very skeptical about his wife and brother because of how long he was gone, supposedly dead, seeing their expressions on the ice and is now doubting the honesty in his relationship (because he's gone crazy); or we can believe that Jake did sleep with his brother's wife because of what the movie entails from the scene where they kissed. That seen shows us they had interest in one another. However, besides all that, because he didn't say, "No, I didn't," or something of the sort when asked if he slept with the wife, I believe he did.

I like the fact that the character finds a reason, focuses on it and explodes. A very, very good actor because you don't need a lot of Sam's words to understand what's going on with him. He finds an "excuse" to affirm his presence and show what he really feels in him.

Tobey Maguire is supposed to look awful in this scene... During his captivity his character was held in a dark cramped hole in the ground, starved for 4 months, and was beaten/tortured. On top of that, he was forced to kill his brother in arms because he couldn't bear to go without seeing his family again. I believe any man would look terrible after that.

SpiderMan was the best, yet worst thing to happen to Toby's acting career. SpiderMan put him on the map, but at the same time that role didn't utilize his acting skills in the slightest. He has so much more potential with these kinds of heavy hitting dramas.

Went through this with my brother once, when I got out of jail. You notice people moving differently and it’s almost impossible to ignore. Almost 10 years later, I never found out if it ever happened or not.

That "I could forgive you", gave me chills! I love actors that can portray so much of a character that you just all of a sudden are thrust within that very situation with just dialogue an a expression that seems completely contradictory to what that character is saying. I didn't even finish the clip but I had to write how much fear Tobey put me in-in a second with which I took as a threat. Great Mans!

I would have told him NO when he asked if I slept with her. And then asked him what is going on in his head. If he would have said no after he asked the question, it probably would have been different. Tommy and Grace never slept together, they only kissed; nothing more. They told Sam the truth but with all he endured, the truth was not enough for him. It’s a sad movie because soldiers actually go through this in real life. But it is a film. Thanks for uploading.

Kingslayer They clearly had sex. A movie doesn't need to visually show you to understand what happened between two characters as long as you pay attention to the dialogue and acting.

I always thought that Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal would be perfect as brothers. Something about them, one just reminds me of the other. Like, they don't exactly look alike, but there's just something there that makes them feel like there are similarities between them. So I found it insane that they were actually casted as brothers in a film literally titled Brothers.

You can tell he's looking for reasons to leave his family and go back to war. He's punishing himself for what he did when captured but at the same time he feels that what he did was in vain because he may have done it just to come back and find his family was better off without him.
