Brothers build boreal utopia of open-roof cube cabins in nature

Күн бұрын

On a piece of land purchased by their grandfather in Charlevoix, Quebec, Jonathan and Simon Galarneau have built a dozen small homes with big views of the Boreal forest. Some are converted shipping containers, others are tiny cubes, but they all have large windows cut into one side so despite the long, freezing winters, one can experience the outdoors from inside a cabin.
The brothers designed and built the structures, with no design degree, but inspired by a father who always built things and who’d dreamt of opening a campground on retirement. After his early death from cancer, Jonathan and Simon began to build their version of a campground. Starting with a bank loan for a “private home”, the first structure was a two story loft with a full wall of window creating passive heat all winter.
Today, the brothers have built over a dozen structures for their Repère Boréal nature resort and expect to have about 20 shelters by year’s end.

I literally just got home from a 3 day weekend at this place with my girlfriend, unbelievable experience. Super clean, friendly staff, spa was amazing. Jonathan was great, helped me get my car unstuck from a little ditch I by accidentally backed my car into :P Thank you again Jonathan! Enjoy the wine, We will be back!

As a roofer I would strongly suggest making the next cube type homes with atleast some kind of slope to the roof to allow for run off, I have seen too many issues with flat roofs. Great video
@potatopotatoeOG

I was thinking the exact same. Especially with a glass roof. The weight will be distributed to the bottom corners of the slope if you're in a snowy area and rain will obviously run off. Cleaning Is going to be easier too just hoist the hose to the top part and watch the debris fall off

It had been named "Kentucky" long before we owned the cabin. The rest of us (my mom and 2 siblings) were quite happy to use the indoor toilet instead. He just liked the novelty unless there was 8 or 10 feet of snow on the ground. Ah...good times in the trees in the mountains.
