Someone else may have mentioned it, but this song was written by Vince Gill & he sang it originally. He wrote the song after losing his brother, as well as a good friend. I'm really surprised you haven't heard it before. When Ralph Stanley passed away in 2016, Vince attended his funeral and sang this song, accompanied by Patty Loveless & Ricky Skaggs. It is such a beautiful song & Home Free does an amazing job. Darren Rust is HF's regular producer. You see him in some of the videos. He's a singer himself & has been with a group called The Blenders for a number of years.

My dad has stage 4 lung cancer. He's a retired USArmy chaplain and is still working as a chaplain at a local hospital, mostly with cancer patients... he can relate with them like not many chaplains can. When I hear this song, it feels like a precursor to his funeral. It does tend to bring on the tears.

@@officialmortiusI'm guessing you don't know this since you said you didn't know the original. This song was written & performed by Vince Gill for his brother when he passed away. Frankly, I'm astounded that Vince can even sing this since, like you, when I listen to it I get very emotional and I'm not sure I could ever sing it, though I really want to. There are a few memorable versions available on KZfaq, the official video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bNCIpdBysKimhIk.html which is beautiful, Vince performing it with Alison Krauss, & Ricky Skaggs kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hN12nLp0utHPZIE.html which is beautiful as well, and Vince performing it with Patty Loveless @ the memorial for George Jones, where Vince couldn't hold it together kzfaq.info/get/bejne/opdhoqanp97SgWQ.html which is sad and beautiful in its own right especially the guitar solo he uses to gather himself, sort of, so he can finish the song. And, no, Amazing Grace is not part of the original, I believe they used that to replace the guitar solo in the original. Even if you don't react to these, and it would be amazing if you did, please take the time to watch them. :)

Yes that was (Adam) Chance doing that bass, during Amazing Grace. You know this but it's worth stating over & over, (Adam) Chance coming on board in May of 2016 was the best thing to ever happen to Home Free. Chance's ability to do a credible baritone...but hisability to be able to confidently carry that bass while Tim goes higher gives them so much better dynamic range than when Chris was with them. Chance has made them and their sound COMPLETE. Have you heard their collab with Peter Hollens on Amazing Grace ? I have it in my Will that version be played at my memorial service ! even if you've seen the videos before, I'd love to hear your breakdowns & analysis of many of Home Free's videos. Have you heard their version of Auld Lang Syne ? I've played it at midnight New Years Eve the last 3 years....it's outrageously good ....not beatboxing so its like this basically 5 part harmony...also have your heard them do "Helplessly Hoping" it's the most beautiful 5 part harmony ....your ears will love you for hearing that ! More Home Free...a new sub...but also listen to some Straigh No Chaser & Voctave....they are excellent too

They technically have 4 tenors, Rob, Tim, Adam and Austin (sometimes Chance too). 2 basses and baritones, Tim and Chance. Super bass man Tim Foust. And 5 beat boxers, their 9 to 5 live version. The drum kit swallower would be Adam Rupp, founding member of HOME FREE, who also has other tricks up his sleeve (birds, insects, harmonica, and so many more), try Man Of Constant Sorrow. Any video you do you'll find things that will surprise you. Tim with his 5+ octave range, has been known to blow speakers and have ceiling tiles drop on his low notes. To hear how high Tim can go I recommend his video of GreenSleeves with Peter Hollens. Austin their high Tenor has a very impressive high voice (Country Fried Pop Medley). You just heard Rob with his vocals in this song, he can be very bluesy in his vocals. Adam Chance, their baritone has a very smooth delivery and can do the bass line when Tim is in his higher register, Sea Shanty Medley is a good one or Some Girls Do.

I would have loved for you to have been my professor. You definitely know your stuff. Please do more Home Free. I love Pentatonix, but Home Free may have them beat by a slight margin. Yeah you pause alot but the deeper analysis was cool and you always scroll back to ensure you don't miss anything. Better than some reactors that are more interested in looking at themselves in the digital mirror or commenting over the singing. I don't come to reaction channels to hear music I'm sure you're linking the originals in the description. If a person wants to hear the song without interruption they need to go to the artists page. People also don't understand copywrites claims and fair use analysis. Keep doing what your doing bro. Ok, as for the cover. The song was written/recorded by Vince Gill after he lost his brother. It's become a staple send off song in the country community for the dearly departed. Amazing grace wasn't in the original but does sample nicely here. I'd encourage you to check out Vince doing this song live at Carnegie Hall with Allison Krauss and Ricky Scaggs.

Love that you go back for the good bits. Just love it. And with HF it is the whole experience that floors us every time. This is a regular part of my listening rotation while I'm working. I loved watching you hear it for the first time. Tim started in high school as a tenor, then his voice dropped his senior year. He worked hard to keep the tenor registers. He has said the 5-octave range is about 10% natural voice and about 90% work on his part. Definitely check out some of their other original work, such as Dive Bar Saints, for Adam Chance ("Chance") on lead, and "It Looks Good" for Tim & Austin on lead, with a video featuring the respective wives/girlfriends of Tim, Austin & Rob (the tenor with the full beard). Those are both originals For another blow-your-mind cover of traditional gospel, try "How Great Thou Art".

I loved your reaction and the input on what you are hearing from your experience as an acapella singer. I'm here to learn and experience what I've already heard many times in new ways. Keep it coming with Home Free! It's hard to recommend what your should do next since I have no idea what you haven't already heard, so just pick one. The Home Fries will be here whichever of their songs you choose to react to. Great reaction!

New subscriber, came for the Homefree reaction and hopefully more. This is a beautiful rendition of this song. You should check out their cover of " How great thou art" for some amazing harmonies. Or for one of their quarentine videos check out their cover of " When a Man loves a Woman" in this one Adam Rupp their beatboxer/ vocal percussionist does an amazing job, as always. Thank you for your emotional reaction.

It's a moving song for sure. Amazing Grace was added in the arrangement by Home Free. You should also personally check out their live version of this where they were singing it at the Ryman in Nashville for a large country music network... and it sounds just as good as the video!

That is what good music does for you. It adds the emotion that drives the the message home to the heart and even the soul. Thank you for your observations on how they accomplish that. I know how it makes me feel to see these guys' videos, but to understand the work and choices that go into it just makes it more satisfying.

Good reaction Your strengths as a reactor in this is your knowledge of acapella we have many other reactors we can watch who can listen with us with less pausing but with less knowledge to share on the subject. There are not many who can fill this niche. Just provide a link to the song you are reacting to in your information for those who need it uninterrupted and be yourself. I just subscribed.

If you haven't heard the original, I'd definitely recommend that as well... Vince Gill ft. Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs - the Official Video. I've heard it hundreds of times and still nothing tops that version for me. Their 3 part harmonies are incredible and bring me to tears every time. As for the meaning of the song, Vince started writing it after the death of fellow country music singer and friend Keith Whitley (the verse "You were no stranger to the rain" is actually a reference to one of Whitley's songs), and then finished it after his older brother passed away. So it has a lot of meaning for him and you can tell when he sings that he is pouring his entire soul into it, sometimes to the point where he is unable to get through it himself without choking up. Those are some of the absolute best performances of this song. Anyway sorry for rambling, I just really love this song lol

Every time I listen to Home Free sing this song I dissolve into a shivering puddle of emotional goo! (Yes, that's a technical term🤣) The original song by Vince Gill does not have Amazing Grace integrated into it. If you want to see an emotional video of this song, there's one of Vince Gill at George Jones's funeral. It will rip your heart out. It truly shows how much Vince loved George Jones. A few other Home Free songs with tremendous harmonies are How Great Thou Art, In the Blood, and Helplessly Hoping, which is absolutely haunting in its simplicity and makes you wish the song was at least twice as long. Great reaction! I adore it when a reactor is real in their emotions. I will recommend the song Mayday also, but PLEASE DO NOT react to it until you've got a good feel for the group! I promise that it's worth the wait! You'll appreciate it so much more, and you'll understand why when you do it! ❤

Tim’s 5 octave range is phenomenal. If you want to hear the other end of his range, check HF original song, Snow Globe, (co-written by Tim) or HF Mayday cover. Love Adam Chance’s bass notes and Rupp’s percussion in Mayday.

Surprise! Tim has a 5+ octave range, and Adam Chance has a 4+ octave range. You already know Adam Rupp (vocal percussion) is a freak of nature by his own admission, and Austin Brown and Rob Lunquist are both awesome tenors with completely different tonal quality that makes damn near everything perfect. The entire group is a pack of unicorns.
