I may not usually be a huge fan of Christmas music, but this one blew me away. An absolutely incredible showcase of what acapella can accomplish as a medium. Thanks to everyone who recommended this! Please, let me know who and what I should react to next as we journey through the amazing art of acapella music.
As always, make sure you check out the original video, and support Home Free with all they do • Home Free - Do You Hea...

You are not going to get yelled at by me, I am not a fan of Pentatonix either, but I am a Huge fan of Home Free and I have to admit also a huge fan of Austin. The arrangement of this song is mindblowing, Adam Rupp did the arrangement and he is fabulous. There is a rumor that his stuff is a little too complicated and the guys back off a little. I hope that is not true because I think we need some more songs like this. I loved your reaction and analysis, please more Home Free. "How Great Thou Art' would be great or "Take me Home Country Roads". They have a huge catalog of great song, many with lots of humor.

I love Pentatonix... they are an amazing acapella group. Voiceplay is amazing as an acapella show doing great covers. Home Free, to me, is simply an amazing group. They transcend acapella with what they produce. I think 75% or more of their songs, you wouldn't be able to say, were acapella if you heard them on the radio. For me, that's what sets them apart.

Oh, many Home Fries aren't Pentaholics, and vice versa, it doesn't mean we don't appreciate the talent the other group has. They are just very different in everything, other than the basic line up and that they are both acapella. Home Free uses their voices to sing instruments, while Pentatonix uses their voices to show voices. Personally I am not a fan of PTX style and tend to only get halfway through their songs before the arrangements become too much for me to enjoy it. Home Free is always on point. At the end of the day that is me, my personal point of view, and it is not something anybody else has to concern themselves with. We all have our different and unique views and interpretations, and that is what makes the world an amazing place and humans an amazing species. Great reaction, you pointed out things I have missed, even though I've listened to this hundreds of times, and missed things I have heard before. That is the way with Home Free's arrangements. :)

This is my favorite Christmas song from Home Free, though I do have some new ones that come pretty close. Austin's twang is genuine being that he was born and raised in southern Georgia. I enjoyed your reaction and breakdown of the different parts of the song. Adam did an impeccable job with the arrangement! If only he would arrange more often. I love all of the intricacies of the song. So many things to listen to, but have to hear it numerous times to catch it all the first time. I was totally blown away my first time hearing it years ago. It's always a favorite for Home Fries to request from reactors. You were correct about it being unusual for the beatboxer to be in front, but I think it was very appropriate for this one since he arranged. Plus, he didn't have to worry about spewing on anyone! lol I would love to see you react to one or two of their songs from their Warmest Winter album. In particular, "Snow Globe" co-written by Tim, and the title track,, which was co-written by Austin. One other that is not their song, but very cool is "Winter Song"!

When I saw that you'd reacted to this, I couldn't click fast enough! Adam did the arrangement for this. He's a brilliant arranger, BUT I've read that his arrangements are so intricate that the guys have trouble making them work! This song has everything! I was especially excited to see how often they would have you pausing with the "What was that!?" type of expression. And Tim...I had visions of him either melting the ice castle with his Dragon Breath or creating a cave in from his subterranean rumblings! Austin has been classically trained. I guess he worked really hard to lose his southern accent and then ended up with Home Free. Funny how life turns out! That funky guitar sound is Austin too! If you watch 9 to 5, make sure to watch the LIVE version, they do an awesome beatbox breakdown, showing that they can all add to the production beyond singing. I'm loving your reactions and how you break everything down. Thank you so much. Have a happy and safe 4th!🇺🇸❤

A note about the evolution of Home Free. The group began in Minnesota and was a typical versatile acapella group that did little country music. It was also not very successful. Adam and Chris Rupp were founding members. As group members moved on, Tim, a Texan, replaced the bass in 2012 or 13, and Austin, from southern Georgia, appeared a year later. When Austin came, they began to present itself as a country vocal group, and that helped them land a spot on the Sing Off TV show, which they won. Eventually Chris Rupp left to pursue a solo career, and Adam Chance, from Alabama, joined. The point is, the current success Home Free is enjoying is not in spite of but because of its country vibe. They can do any genre, and Austin can sing with formal pronunciation, but the accent in 'Do You Hear What I Hear' is mild and fits their image. Once you listen to more of their music, you will find that Austin can do about anything a tenor can do. He has incredible vocal control and flexibility. In fairness I have to say I was born in Chattanooga and lived in Nashville from the age of 2 until I was graduated from college, so I have had a lot of exposure to country music and to southern accents, so I may be biased. My favorite two female singers are both Southerners: Dolly Parton from East Tennessee, and Jessye Norman, from southern Georgia (like Austin).

For what it’s worth, you’re actually missing a LOT of the nuances that make this arrangement so awesome, simply because there’s too much to comment on in one video, and you’re stopping too often to be able to hear what is happening when you’re pausing. I think you'd enjoy Peter Hollens - He's made a lot of stuff with the Home Free guys, but also with other artists, he's like his own acapella group, he works a lot with layering of his vocals, often upwards 100 tracks, or more. This was arranged by the breatboxer/percussionist . I love Christmas music especially religious Christmas music. However, I have never particularly cared for this one. I love the lyrics but not the music .But this arrangement....oh my goodness. This is absolutely glorious! I never get tired of listening to it. Thanks for the reaction video. You caught a lot of the intricacies of the arrangement that most reactors never catch .

Same here. I've never liked the song "Do You Hear What I Hear" and then Adam does an amazing arrangement of it and the guys all do an amazing job performing it and suddenly it's my all time favorite Christmas song. Well, HF's version, anyways...

Love this so much. Cannot disagree with you more about Austin's accent, which I think only adds to the arrangement, but I agree it's a unique and beautiful arrangement. Great job Mr Rupp ❤

That drop you talked about so much is pretty much their style. It is on point and makes a dramatic punch to a song. This song has so much to it I have listened to it probably a hundred times just hear every voice. Try "O Holy Night". 🎶🍟

Late to the party - Christmas carol aside - this is one of my favourite HF songs. The arrangement is astounding and the different cultural music styles just makes it even more amazing - I mean then you just have how incredibly talented they all are...

An excellent analysis of a very complicated arrangement! I've heard their version of this song many a time, and I was still caught off guard by all the cool things you pointed out. I would love to hear your take on a new Home Free cover called Brothers in Arms. It's a beautiful song with a very interesting arrangement. It doesn't have a video as of yet because the album it's on was just released, but there is an audio version on youtube.

Thank you for your reaction sir! This definitely is my favorite accapella arrangement (arranged by beatboxer, Adam Rupp) I have heard, probably because my favorite thing in vocal music is percussion. With the line “Listen to what I say” HF member sings in a different octave going from bass to high tenor. Home Free and Peter Hollins are my favorite vocal artists. Other favorite Home Free songs are Snow Globe, Dive Bar Saints, Full of Cheer (originals) O Holy Night, Chris Rupp featuring Home Free “What Child Is This” HF Folsom Prison Blues, Some Girls Do, House Party or Butts remix. A fun track to listen for accapella layering is Peter Hollins/Tim Foust “Misty Moutains” cover.

Something No One has mentioned is that this video was shot on location (Ice Castle) in Minnesota when it was Negative 14 or so. The guys Were SINGING in that and still made the video look good. I couldn't even BREATH right at that temp.

Adam did the arrangement. Chris his older brother , the founder along with his brother Adam has since left to pursue a solo career. He told that at a concert I was fortunate to attend. Major granny groupie here. Drove to Alaska to see them.

Austin wrote Cold Hard Cash. A Christmas song that is so overdo. When was the last time a new Christmas came out. It’s displays Austin knack for writing and sing… and his humor.

Austin is from Tifton, Georgia and I love his Southern accent. He can sing without it. Check his solo Bring Him Home from Les Miz is you haven't already. He has a background of musical theater. He was working as a performer on a cruise ship when he first met Home Free who were guest performers. The truth based joke is that he had to get his "Georgia" back to join the group.

Ha ha! Finally! Someone else who is, “not the biggest Pentatonix fan.” I know, musically, they are incredibly talented, just not my cup of tea. I could sit and listen to someone talk about their technique and skill and explain the complexities of what they do all day. I definitely could not listen to them sing all day. Generally they get a pretty quick skip from me when they show up in a playlist.

LOL Austin is from South Georgia and while performing in Theater production performances on a Cruise ship in 2011 he met Home Free when they were Hired as Guest performers He let them know If they ever had a position open he would be interested in joining at that point Austin had trained the deep south twang out of his vocals well an opening came available when a member retired and Austin was added and the first thing they asked was bring back the twang *Chuckle * so you'll learn to love it.
