This alloy can also be used for an accurate bore diameter measurement. In certain cases, it can also be used to remove a stuck casing from a rifle. Most commonly used to determine the caliber of a rifle.

Excellent video. This is especially useful for used rifles that might have custom chambers or 'kit guns' that have odd/obsolete calibers. Another use is when your drilling gas ports in barrels, since the metal inside the barrel will help prevent galling as the drill bit breaks through into the bore.

You got your grooves and lands mixed up there at the end measuring tge cast. Grooves are always the larger diameter. You need to remember this is a inside casting of the bore. The 0.298" is the land or bore diameter. The grooves are what is cut from the nominal bore or lands hoke. The grooves would have been that 0.311" My guess is cerrosafe is likely 0.0005 smaller than actual. Plus you are using a caliper not a good quality mic to take those measurements. But for a 7.62x54r those would be to spec measurements and good for muzzle as nominal is 0.300" bore/land and 0.312"groove.

A fresh brew of coffee is at a temp of 160-170 degrees, just to give a idea of melting point of the Cerrosafe. A tip to help eliminate the bubbles that appear as imperfections would be to use a small vibration while having the bore clean and at about 130 degrees during the pouring. You could also determine your rifling of the bore if your into harmonics and accuracy of your round. I want to say that direct heat to the Cerrosafe will burn the Bismuth and produces the clumps as mentioned to avoid

Hi. Great vid , but two questions : - how do you remove the casting from the muzzle end ? (From a Winchester, for instance) - how do you force the heated Cerrosafe to stay at the top of the muzzle ? What do you use ? Thx in advance for your answer ?

Yet another good vid man-Hey, while I'm thinking about it, I've watched several of your cast rifle bullet videos, and I don't think I ever saw anything about light bullets in a Mosin...is it feasible to load a 7.62x54R with a 115grn .313" pistol bullet on top of some bullseye, red dot, or 2400? I found a few places that mention using them for subsonic loads, but caution against SEE...not something I want to experience. I'll also have 135grn GC to load up-any suggestions?

Do you like slugging the bore better with this stuff or with the lead ball? This looks like an easy way to do it.

why shouldn't you apply the heat directly to the metal? you don't want debris of oxides in the alloy?

@bhp1984 i went to college for millwright industrial mechanic and i have a vernier micrometer (measures an extra digit to the right of the decimal) that is mechanical and my teacher said that was the best because the digital ones are just too unreliable (prob had something to do with teaching us the basics too now that i think of it.) any hoo long story short i fully agree with you.

Love your videos, I'm a machinist and engineering student but just getting into reloading and gunsmithing etc. Just wanted to comment about referring to a caliper to "mic out" a measurement. Maybe I'm just a metrology geek, but something like measuring something like lands an grooves should probably be done with actual micrometers with a blade anvil. Get thyself a good mechanical mic and and tip set if you don't already have one. I prefer starret to mitutoyo and mechanical to digital.

That alloy is pretty cool stuff, never seen it before. How much does it cost, and does gun oil contaminate it? How fast does the gun oil ruin it if it does. That's not a mic it's a caliper, and you need to use it properly to get a good measure from it. Cool stuff anyway.

I've got an 1895 Winchester I thought (it was sold as) was chambered in .30-40 Krag...went to put it on auction and turns out the barrel isn't original...no marking whatsoever on it - when I get it back I'll cast the chamber....it'd be nice if it was rebarreled in .30-06 or 7.62x54R
