This rifle is ideal for a new hunter who is looking for a light, fast and accurate semi-automatic rifle. But it does come with a price, it's not a cheap rifle but you'll never get sick of looking at it or shooting it. Update: 02/21/2018 You can watch my hunt vid with this BAR at • Running whitetail hear...

I can say that when you hunt with a rifle with a wooden stock they get scratches and dents, the first couple really standout but after that it just adds character. I have one of my favorite browning rifles that has a stock that looks like a beat up old fence post.

Yes, the BAR is a great gun! It is the only semi auto to be able to shoot the .338 Magnum (which is a necked down .458 Magnum) which testifies to it's strength. I prefer the older Safari grade BAR's as they are the classic guns. My brother has the 7mm Magnum Safari and is very happy with his. You made a good choice with the .308 as it's found everywhere and kicks far less than the 30-06 but both are very accurate. If you sight your gun in 2" high at 100 yards you are good at any deer aiming dead on up to 200 yards and no need to adjust your aim if shooting for the lungs. Most of all you didn't get caught up in the Magnum league and bought a very efficient caliber to reload ... which may be your next step in shooting.

Other way around, you can use 7.62 in a gun chambered for .308, but not .308 ammo in a gun chambered for 7.62: www.6mmbr.com/308Win.html .308 Win vs. 7.62x51--The Straight Scoop Before we go much further, we want to address the oft-posed question "Are the .308 Winchester and 7.62x51 NATO one and the same?" The simple answer is no. There are differences in chamber specs and maximum pressures. The SAMMI/CIP maximum pressure for the .308 Win cartridge is 62,000 psi, while the 7.62x51 max is 50,000 psi. Also, the headspace is slightly different. The .308 Win "Go Gauge" is 1.630" vs. 1.635" for the 7.62x51. The .308's "No-Go" dimension is 1.634" vs. 1.6405" for a 7.62x51 "No Go" gauge. That said, it is normally fine to shoot quality 7.62x51 NATO ammo in a gun chambered for the .308 Winchester (though not all NATO ammo is identical). Clint McKee of Fulton Armory notes: "[N]obody makes 7.62mm (NATO) ammo that isn't to the .308 'headspace' dimension spec. So 7.62mm ammo fits nicely into .308 chambers, as a rule." You CAN encounter problems going the other way, however. A commercial .308 Win round can exceed the max rated pressure for the 7.62x51. So, you should avoid putting full-power .308 Win rounds into military surplus rifles that have been designed for 50,000 psi max. For more information on this interesting topic, read the following articles: Gun Zone's 30 Caliber FAQ; Cruffler.com Technical Trivia, June 2001; and last, but not least, Steve Redgwell's .308 vs 7.62x51 Analysis, which really provides a definitive explanation. Reloaders should also note that military ammo often is made with a thicker web. Consequently the case capacity of 7.62x51 brass is usually less than that of commercial .308 brass. You may need to reduce recommended .308 Winchester loads by as much as 2 full grains, if you reload with military 7.62x51 brass, such as Lake City or IMI.

I’ve always wanted a BAR since the day my buddy said on the way into the woods one morning “You always hear these stories about guys who shoot a doe and the two bucks that are chasing her……that will never happen to me.” Well 40 minutes later I hear Boom!……boom!…… then he texted me and said “I shot a doe and a big buck that was chasing her and there’s another buck there too but I’m all tagged out in bucks.” I texted back “Shoot it I’ll tag it.” Seconds later ….boom! I’ll never forget that day ….he was jumping up and down like a kid in a candy store…..he said “I was just telling you this will never happen to me.” He kissed his rifle , A Brownjng BAR IN .270 and said “Man I just love this rifle.” Right there I knew I had to have one. I’ve since bought an extremely beautiful Browning A bolt medallion in 300 win mag but it is just too pretty to take in the woods although I’m a firm believer in use it like you stole it so I still hunt with it but I try to be really careful with that beauty. So last year I finally scored my dream rifle , a plane Jane 80’s model BAR IN 300 win mag. I plan on mounting a one piece rail mount and a Leupold VX-5 XD 3-16x44 for this seasons rifle hunting. I usually take most of my deer during archery, mainly does unless I see a big buck I just can’t pass on but I know where a big monster buck is from last season in a very private, non hunter spot and I plan on getting him this year with the BAR.

My first rifle was a BAR in 7mm Mag. This choice resulted in me becoming an expert when it comes to ice packs and topical anesthetics. Surprisingly, it also started my love affair with the quality of Browning rifles and shotguns. My only regret is getting it in 7 Mag instead of a less powerful cartridge.

This video was so pleasant to watch. I really appreciate your authenticity. I purchased a BAR in .308. It is the 10 round detachable box mag with the 18 inch fluted barrel. I hope I get the same accuracy you get. Did I understand one of your other comments correctly that you installed a barrel stabilizer on your BAR? I know guys who do that with the mini -14 but I’ve never heard of it for the BAR and I didn’t see anything unusual on your gun. Thanks for the great video! May God’s hand be over you and your family.

15 or so years ago I saw one on the dealer's shelf.i held it and I ordered one in 308 and I got it in 18.5" barrel. I bought a additional black composite stock along with the walnut stock.i put a X-ring on it and it will shoot 25 rounds at 100 yards all inside a 2" circle. Think about what I said all 25 rounds inside a 2" circle dot target. Take your best bolt action and fire it 25 times all at a 2" circle. If all 25 shots go inside without any flyers then you have a great bolt action and it's got accuracy as good as a BAR short track 308

Everything browning does in 30 caliber is 1-10 except there 308..the 308 is 1-12 twist.that must have to do with its crazy accuracy. The 1-12" twist in 308

Those are proper wear marks. It would be so much nicer looking. I have a walnut grade stock with wear marks and it’s my favourite rifle. I love the wood on. David SK Park I have done it on a couple of rifles but not a semi. I’m not sure what it takes to get the stock off of a semi. All I used was a varnish remover. It is a lot of work. We also used steam to get out any dents in the wood and we used checkering tools to redo the checkering. After we removed the varnish. Its shooting holes that touch each other at 25 yards but its super hard to zero with hammer and punch. Its too hard to get it bullseye at 100 yards so i might go back to the scope . I wouldnt mind to get a full length rail and a red dot sight. Id use it as my bush gun since i got rid of my 303 british. The 270 win. I thought it was the other way around too. But I double checked. *Just for reference: (from Wikipedia) The .308 Winchester and military 7.62×51mm NATO cartridges are similar enough that they can be loaded into rifles chambered for the other round, but the .308 Winchester cartridges are typically loaded to higher pressures than 7.62×51mm NATO service cartridges.[14] Even though the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute (SAAMI) does not consider it unsafe to fire the commercial .308 Winchester rounds in weapons chambered for the military 7.62×51mm NATO round.*

I guess my question is, was your uncle an accurate shooter? When I bought that beautiful old Browning rifle in 243 it had an old red field scope on it and it looked good. I waisted about 2 boxes of ammo and almost excepted this rifle shooting 2.5-3'' 3shot group at 100yard. But I decided to invest $200 on a scope and $10 on a barrel stabilizer and now it shoots under 1" at any given day. I think you should mount the scope, make sure everything is torque down properly and shoot a box and decided if you want to invest on a new scope. But honestly, I trust old rifles more than old scopes. God bless brother.

@@ar21angler76 It's complicated process, but simply put: New guns have duty material and grease in the barrel and you need to clean them before you fire it, and you want to clean them as you fire it for about first 20 rounds to give proper and even coating inside your barrel. My simple version is I clean my barrel first, clean barrel after every shot for first 10 rounds with boresnake, and clean after every 3 shots for additional 12 rounds and I'm done. Barrel break-in use to be very important but with modern barrels it's less important, and many gun manufacturer's still recommends them, but I have seen noticeable difference. Have fun n God bless.
