Dustin Poirier defeated Conor McGregor by knockout in the 2nd round at UFC 157, and even though the Internet is circulating memes of Conor sleeping in the Octagon after taking some damaging punches from Poirier, the conversation in martial arts circles has been about how Dustin used a technique from the godfather of mixed martial arts himself, Bruce Lee.
When we talk about martial artists who tap into their inner power, I don't think anyone exemplifies this more than combat sport athletes competing at the highest level of professional sports. We've talked about Bruce Lee in previous videos here, but in this video I want to talk about Bruce Lee, the UFC, and how Dustin Poirier used a Bruce Lee technique to beat Conor McGregor.
So maybe you heard about this fight not long ago, but Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor squared off in the Octagon at UFC 257 for a rematch. The first time they met up 7 years ago, Conor knocked out Poirier in the first round. From there, Conor built up this rep as the knockout guy. In his words, he made heads bounce off the mat. There was the knockout in 13 seconds against Jose Aldo, and at this point, the rep took off. People were saying Conor was like the embodiment of Bruce Lee's teachings and Jeet Kune Do inside the Octagon.

I like this channel, but this is silly. Low kicks are a major staple of Muay Thai which is probably the most common form of striking in MMA. That is why the weight is distributed more on the rear leg than in other kickboxing styles, to avoid that damage. Anyone who has been kicked in the lead leg with their weight on it by a Muay Thai kick knows how devastating it is from even an intermediate level striker.

I think Poirier went to the archives of an old forgotten temple and discovered the elusive counter to boxing: the legs. 😂😅 but hey it's just my spin on this. lol you are probably right. many got there legs destroyed like that and carried off on a stretcher.😅 uh hum!

I really enjoyed your last video of beating Connor McGregor with Bruce Lee JKD leg kicks. Like yourself I too live a life with the spirit of a martial artist. At my age of almost 54 this month I grew up watching Bruce. I read most of his books, The Tao of Jeet Kune Do was a life changing book for me. I started out in Kajukenbo, learned to kick from Taekwondo, and later learned white crane Kung Fu and then Tai Chi. I’m not a competitive fighter but my core value and spirit is that of a martial artist. Quietness with peace.

I've been doing Jeet Kune Do for the last 10 years now my brotha and yes that low kick called the Jeet Tek was borrowed from Wing Chun and a mixture of savate, however, the footwork is what separates it. Jeet Kune Do footwork enables you to get a faster release and more power in it, and that's the difference. Dustin Poirier used Jeet Kune Do concepts like you just said, but he wasn't using Jeet Kune Do techniques in that fight with Conor. If he was, he would of got Conor out of there even quicker.

I mean I’ll agree with the one of last things he said, because it isn’t wrong, he used jkd concepts not techniques. Similar to if a Muay Thai fighter dropped some Muay Thai concepts and adopted boxing ones, eg no longer caring about being upright and unmoved like in Muay Thai , rather focusing on ring control and pressure/aggression like is favoured in boxing. Porier was Using the jkd concept of intercepting attacks with a low kick, using it defensively and offensively, of course it was the Muay Thai technique for the low kick not the jkd style low kick though.

Good analysis. Jeet Tek and the Savate kicks aren't just about stopping forward momentum and removing a good strikers ability to make contact; if applied appropriately some of these kicks are about locking up an opponents base so they can't really move at all. Mentioned kickboxing, kickboxing at one time at least, inherited the Teep which many seem to be limited in thinking it's simply to stop forward momentum and deny a strike, but the way I was taught is the most effective teep applies the force in and down into the pelvis which for a brief moment locks the opponents legs into place. Against an opponent whose hips are lower this is straight forward to apply, against an opponent whose hips are higher it's a pulling motion on the femur with the teep and by an expert it can actually be as low as directly above the opponents grounded knee. That provides the opportunity for a counter strike on their offense IF you are quick enough and have good enough balance. You can see the refinement and application of this principle in Benny Urquidez fights where he utilized this with a flurry of quick combos. Worst case of "dead leg" I've seen was Rick Roufus in two fights actually, the first against Changpuek Kietsongrit. Kietsongrit completely destroyed the legs of Roufus and rendered him incapable of maneuvering at all therefore incapable of striking at all. The other I think was an exhibition fight, I don't remember his opponent but I remember them showing his legs after the fight and they looked scary and I thought at the time didn't he learn from the Kietsongrit fight. My opinion, checks are very under utilized in competitive fighting, especially the UFC. And most people don't even realize that there is an instep kick that is actually a check which is the strongest check I've ever learned of. People who discover often dismiss it because they assume it's with the actual instep or arch of the foot but it's not, its just to the front of the heel and so the force is literally working against someone's entire leg and bodyweight on one of the largest sets of bones in the body. The practice for getting good at it is to focus on index training with the lower leg, essentially training to place the heel on contact points as quickly and precisely as you can. So long as checks are not incorporated, we will see fights end because people aren't protecting them from kicks.

@friktionrc
@friktionrc 2 жыл бұрын
He never said (or insinuated) Bruce Lee was the first to kick the legs in a fight. What he said was that Bruce Lee took specific parts from other martial arts and created his own version...in this case, the low kicks from Savate. Bruce Lee took what he felt worked for him from loads of different martial arts...including fencing....I.e the explosive power as a fencer lunges at their opponent. What Bruce Lee did do, was bring Chinese Martial Arts to the western world, when before it was largely a no-no for it to be taught to non Chinese, and as such not many folks in the wider world (so those from a non Martial Arts back ground) would know about Kung Fu or it’s different styles. What Bruce Lee also did was bring to the forefront the idea of training in multiple disciplines and not just collecting belts and rigidly following each style but actually taking bits from each martial art and see what works for you...after all we’re all different both in size, speed, how much punishment our bodies can take etc so why should we all train the same way. The current addiction of MMA is an example where exponents especially at the pro level have a mixture of ground game (so wrestling/BJJ/JJ) as well as stand-up game (MThai, Karate , etc)....Again Bruce was not the first person on the planet to train in a mixture of martial arts, but he was one of the first bring this idea to the fore-front because before he came along, very rarely would countries openly teach ‘outsiders’ their own art...unless there was a specific teach willing to do so.... So in short if it wasn’t for Bruce Lee, the concept of ‘cross training’ in multiple disciplines wouldn’t be as prevalent nor as acceptable as it is now. And this is all before we get to his training and diet regime. When he was training and developing JKD he also paid attention to what food he ate, how it affected his strength and speed as well as creating special weight /resistance machines that until then, was not given more than a passing thought....Sport specific nutrition etc was still a new tangled idea back in those days with little to no proper scientific evidence...aside from eating salad, most top sport stars would go out drinking and binge eating junk lol....Lee realised the benefit that a healthy and proper diet had on his martial arts training and fitness levels. I’m not saying he never popped pills...he was a hot headed punk kid back in the day, but as with all of us, we mature as we grow up and we leave that young crazy sh*t we did as young kids behind and that’s what can be seen when reading and understanding stuff like “Tao of Jeet Kune Do” and “The Art of Expressing The Human Body”. Bruce Lee never said ‘do what I do’ ....instead he always taught ‘do what works for you’

Have to grant your good description of Bruce Lee incorporating Savate. Sounds innovative... but not without comparable tactics from Wing chun,,, as you note. A Wing chun side kick is typically meant for the damaging technique. As for the principle of 'interception...' Wing chun heavily promotes the principle throughout its striking... perhaps shared as you say with Savate.

On Poirier's low kicks... MMA wised up to these eons ago. For the most part, low kicks were made popular in kickboxing contests,,, where Muay Thai competitors use low kicks as staple of their style. And for precisely the objectives you state. MMA transferred low kicks from the cross-pollination with Muay Thai training... as traditionally competition karate kumite generally prohibited low kicks. Exceptions to this rule count Kyokushin among it's numbers... where low kicks were actively employed during kumite. Regarding MMa, Bruce Lee was no where to be found in this process... surry to say. Cheers.

That jeet tek you speak of is absolutely correct. Bruce Lee looked at savate as a method of kicking he incorporated into jkd. The jeet tek he uses in from wing Chun yes. The stance in jkd is heavily influenced by fencing. So the idea of using the jeet tek ad an offensive move for us is not the focus. We use it a a means to stop an opponent in there advanced to set them up for a serious side kick to the mid section. Success jkd student who understand the true concept of jkd kicking master jkd foot work. Look up octavio quintero fenceing with the feet. His foot work and skill with jkd kicking is one of the best. That jeet tek can neutralize a forward advance with a follow up strike. The follow up strike would normally be a quick round house to the inner part of the thigh or side of the knee to prevent motion of that leg after the jeet tek to the knee cap of a hard side to center mass to sent that opponent flying. The jeet tek is our straight lead with the foot. Get in with a strike and follow through immediately. The main difference in our jeet tek and wing Chuns is that we use it as a stop and wing Chun guys use it as a set so bring down an assailant by stepping of to the side and hitting the person in a way that obstructs the foundation to stand. Truthfully both are great. In fact Jessy clovers non classical gunfu uses the jeet tek in a similar way to wing Chun. Jesse's art is his interpretation of his practice of Jun fan gungfu with a heavy implementation of judo heavily focusing on trapping to take downs. I personally like both very well.

Wing Chun does have a side stance in the gwan also the sidekick is used more than a couple of times first seen in Chum Kiu which is all about the bridge, so there you go... Before I started training Wing Chun I started sparring from a side stance and then a bai jong which we have in Wing Chun and is easily done sideways.. When I sparred I always started bladed and then very soon would change to square when entering.... And sure any long time Wing Chun person has heard of Pan Nam sounds like an airline...

Just finished this recap fully Prince. . this is good dog. Excellent breakdown.. indeed Prince, I haven't heard of Pan Nam Wing Chun before (if I'm spelling it right).. that's what's up tho. the jeet tec kick is powerful. . way of the intercepting foot, sts. LMAO!... indeed, I've practice the jeet tec alot on mook jong training I did before, on a tree I used as a jong, light poles & walls. It's very affective. years ago I was chi sao & light weight sparring w/ my man down the way & I used the jeet tec alot on his forward motion. I caught him right in his shin & he was like 'yo man'. LMAO!.. he wasn't used to that type of move.. indeed that's real how Bruce broke it down as like a 'foot jab' off the persons left lead. Dan Inosanto used to teach to switch up & know how to move off both leads. dig?.. I dig your interjection & insight on it too tho.. indeed that constant blow to the leg & damaged tissue def gave way to "dead leg" & took my man under. . so the Jun Fan technique is the jeet tec. ?. nah that's genius on my man's part. . that was very tactical strategy that took down McGregor.. indeed I agree Prince- any form of martial science or even in MMA can be useful & applied to anyone's overall training. . no doubt bro.. this is a strong one here baby 👊🏾!..

There is a difference in The art of Martial art movements in comparison to What is real and what is fantasy.There are many movements in so many martial arts that will not survive effectively in the street or Octagon. This is the truth behind Bruce Lee’s research for the true effectiveness ,as to what works and what doesn’t. He Bruce Lee’s philosophy was carve away the unessentials and use what is useful. I believe Judo is effective as well as BJJ and Jun Fan kick boxing. If you have a force of Iron Mike or Evander Holyfield coming at you, I hope one applies what is effective to make all the difference. Bruce depicted Karate as a comparison to swimming on dry land. I believe he was correct. Practice what’s effective and what feels good to survive against an attacker anywhere at any given time. I believe if one thinks about it, they will come to a reality based decision on the non effective and the true effectiveness of Martial Arts!

While I do like and agree with most of your videos. But those kicks are more like Muay thai low kicks which are thrown with more power both to intercept and to chop down/damage the oponents legs. poirier was inspired by Ong Bak i think LoL.

Now don't get me wrong. I'm a big Connor McGregor fan. But like what Marvin Hagler once said? It's tough to get out of bed to do roadwork at 5am when you've been sleeping in silk pajamas.

Just kinda sad to learn that the whole impression I had of him - a guy who beat anyone he ever fought - was wrong because he never really fought anyone.

Bruce Lee was deeply juiced n drugged for which he could never get to a real training to be a champ either in MMA or Thai boxing. Yes, this dude had talents n skills to develop but his indiscipline life n drug addict would impair his chance to fight in a sanctioned championship as he could not develop a stamina for a 30 minute fight. Another flaw was his slimy bone built which clearly indicated he had very limited capacity to eat huge and devastating kicks n punches thrown by the calibre of Bukauw. And His totally void background of MMA ground game would make him an easy target for the like of Khabib who would slam him down n treated him wt special ground n pound that would put the slimy body Lee into a total sleep n a demeaning demise once n for all. Keep it in mind, this dude called Bruce Lee was only good in the movies whose fighting choreographs written by him played out vs prof. stuntmen who were paid to dive to give Lee a spectacularly good n flashy look. Octagon n Thai Box rings are other stories. These sanctioned fights despite having referee n rules are extremely dangerous n highly risks as proven by the number of calamities n fatalities recorded through out the history of combat sport. Again, Keep it in mind this dude called B Lee is only good in the movies. In a real 30 mins fight he would not have much chance. Yes, u can simply conclude that in terms of real fight, he is just a cult myth. Nothing more.

Does it matter? When you listen to Dan Inosanto, Bruce trained both. In the Wing Chun that I was taught, the kick is supposed to destroy the leg. My teacher didn't say "see this kick, this is a Wing Chun kick. You can only kick like this!" I was studying to do stunt work, so I was also learning Wushu. My teacher said learn to add those wushu kicks to my Wing Chun. Don't get so caught up on the words. It's the principle that matters.

@@Meatisfood well it supposed to mean intercept the other person attack..its not how you learn the technique its how you apply it on real fight...it also helps you to become one with urself so you dont go away from your defence lane...if a martial artist or any martial arts practitioner does not become one with himself theres no point in learning from scratch if he forgets how to apply it in real life situation
