Melissa/Missy and I were friends, in Leavenworth, when we were both 15. We were in the same performance group, the same youth group, and we were did "Godspell" together - she played lead-guitar, and I played the "floozy" character ... SO much fun! We knew, then, that she was going places. I got to see her again, 3 years ago, when she played at the Oregon State Fair ... I got to invite several of my children to meet back-stage, prior to the show. She's as real as she seems to be. Pure gold heart.

I have a 7 yr old daughter. Her mother, my wife, sings to her each night as she falls asleep. My wife went on a business trip, so I was obviously put in charge of getting my daughter to bed. For three consecutive nights I softly sang "Thunder Road" in its entirety to my daughter as she slowly fell asleep. When my wife returned from her trip, the first morning back while eating breakfast, my wife asked my daughter "Did Daddy sing to you at night to help you fall asleep?" My daughter replied; "No". He read some poem about a girl named Mary who wanted to run away from home because she wasn't happy and thought it would be better somewhere else" A 7 yrs old's interpretation of "Thunder Road". Brought a tear to my eye, but that's exactly what it is ...poetry.

There are a couple of even more, equally meaningful lines in this song. They paint a full canvas of the tremendious diverse and challenging life - the American/western life-style, a structure, I can still identify with today. They are about all the Drama, risks, courage, desires and determination, that does envelope itself tightly around the tough process of 'growing up and making a living in small-town US'. Its one more powerful ballade by Springsteen - - - texting about rather sad and desperate scenes, --> but in the end these songs rather seem to empower us more and accept that struggle and take up the challenge ... its ".. no time for loosers we pulling out to win!" It s indeed a song from a different time - no 'woke wise-cracking' or 'stylish Tik-Tok show off' come here into play. Rather leave me behind with a sad nostalgic feeling of the old times of 🎵"Those were the Days of '69 🎵". 😢

Melissa tells a story about that line in one of her KZfaq videos. She specifically asked Bruce if she could sing that line as she had just come out and thought the line was symbolic. Bruce agreed, but then during the first take, which was perfect, she forgot to come in, so they had to re-record the song. If you watch the video, she almost forgets to come in again, and Bruce looks at her and smiles, and then she leans over and makes a comment about how she almost messed up again.
@peibouls2 жыл бұрын
@@robbbbbie12 she actually forgets in this version too, but realizes it when he looks at her. She comes in late, and he holds the chord (I don’t know what note it is) until the word “climb”, where he changes notes again. I think the emphasis when he changes is his reaction a la “that’s it”. In my opinion, that actually makes this even better, because it shows two masters making music in real time. It’s those small hiccups that make live music awesome!

Born to Run concert at the Orange Bowl in Miami- the played for 3 hrs!! First time I smelled pot too.. asked my big brother what’s that funny smell and he told me to shut up and not breathe…. Melissa- saw her when she just started and she wasn’t signed by WEA yet. She played in Miami Beach at a club called Woody’s owned by Ron Wood… there were only like 7 people there and I was floored at her talent. Went back to my friends and raved about her and how we have to be her agent…🙄 I got the”what the f do you know about music” and I just said, enough to know that this woman is gonna be big, you just wait. Then I end up living next to an executive from WEA and they gave me her gold album! You know I threw it in their face and simply said, “we could have been retired by now…”but I did meet her in Miami Beach backstage and she was very gracious. 🌈💪 one of her best songs was a rendition on the piano of The Weakness in Me by Joan Armatrading- check it out!

The best - she played this on the piano from her home in California on April 12th 2020 - sharing some backstory to the lyrics 'So Mary Climb In"...watch Bruce chuckle ...Melissa is graciously doing a 30 minute nightly live feed solo 'concert' on piano or guitar - sometimes saluting other artists (Janis Joplin) but mostly her brilliant repertoire of songs. She is so amazing - I think she's up to show #29...and will keep going until this COVID-19 Pandemic of 2020 self isolation mandata is lifted --could be another few weeks ...or longer...STAY HOME and watch these amazing artists share their talent - for free - (virtual tip jars are sometimes requested from so give what you can). Thank you musicians all over the world - we so appreciate the music you are bringing to our lives during this challenging time. So grateful.

My dad introduced me to Bruce’s music when I was young and it took me until I was about 12 to truly appreciate his music . I’m 19 now and I’m still listening.

There are some musicians that simply transcend it all and are like magic in a bottle. The Beatles for sure....Bruce for sure as well. Nobody like him!

This particular rendition has become one of my favorite songs. When we look back at the 80s-90s, this'll be one of the stand outs.

It is indeed a fabulous version of this song. I go back to it often. You have great taste, taping it off the TV back then and treasuring it. Etheridge and Springsteen are both great and their voices go together perfectly.

Whern he does this live he just sings "Screen-door slams...." then the audience takes over and sings the first verse for him while he stands and conducts them. It's an incredible moment!!!! It's become a tradition at his concerts. Can't think of any other band where that happens. Melissa has the perfect voice to sing with him. Great stuff. Today's 'singers' should take note - THIS is what they're aiming at

I was at a Springsteen concert in DC (one of many that I have attended). Some people on the first tier unfurled a banner that said "lesbians love Bruce." He yelled back "I love you, too." A man and a poet of love of humanity. He has written and performed so many great songs. And Etheridge, "You Can Sleep While I Drive" is such a great love song. Love to them both. The best.
