Brock, what makes your videos so real are the small things that don't go according to the owner's manual. Seized up bolts, sockets stuck, zerks that don't cooperate. Until I found your channel, I was certain that I was the only one having to stop and run to Harbor Freight, Tractor Supply or even Home Depot for that missing whatchamacallit. Many times if I go once to those stores I have to go a second or even a third time. Thanks for keeping it real for this tractor newby!!

Brock, I’m glad to see some of the tips I’ve shared with you have helped you out. I left a comment about how to change the oil in the gear box. I was just talking to a friend of mine the other day about how every time I start a new project or maintenance task / modification. How I always have to stop what I’m doing and spend more money to get the right tools if I don’t already have them. I now fully understand why the old timers have amassed such huge tool collections in their lifetime haha. I guess I’m old according to your daughter even though I’m only 35 years young. Jason

Brock, I'm not old...I'm only 60! It's all in the mind (and the muscles and joints the next day!!) Viva Naproxen!!! I have done the all jobs you are doing and while gratifying when you're done, what a pain when you're solo and needing to get to work with the brush mower!!! Don't forget to lube the actual PTO telescoping shaft...metal on metal. It's a pain because the plastic shaft shielding ought to come off, though you can fudge a lot just by coating up the smaller diameter shaft well and sliding it in a few times to distribute the grease. Now you've done it all...it does get easier the next time.

Yes you should grease the metal slide but not the plastic slide per the operators manual. It also says you should grease the shaft where the driveline slips over the gearbox shaft. So when the sheer pin breaks there is some lubrication to let it spin and not burn up the shaft. I believe a snap ring keeps it in place when the sheer bolt breaks. You may have mentioned that but I didn’t hear you mention it. or maybe yours doesn’t have a snap ring like mine does.…
@RockhillfarmYT
@RockhillfarmYT 2 жыл бұрын
Mine does not have a snap ring. I did grease that shaft but I didn’t mention it. I forgot to grease the two pieces of the PTO shaft so I need to go back and do that. I wish there was a way to add a clip into a video so it had all the information Thanks for the tips as always

I do some pretty extreme "hogging" on a 1200 acre hunting lease and I've gone through my share of stump jumpers and blade sets...and I can say without a doubt, those are some of the worst looking blades I've ever seen on a brush hog!! I keep mine sharp for a cleaner cut on the pasture grass, but more importantly, a sharp blade is going to slice through grass/brush quicker and be less stressful on the tractor and the gearbox. Also, I find it easier to drop the stump jumper when replacing blades...not only does it make replacing blades easier, but taking the stump jumper off occasionally prevents it from seizing up on the shaft because eventually you will have to take it off!!

Found you researching slipping my slip clutch, thanks for walking us through it! Just a "tip" for you, Lock N Lube makes a pretty cheap kit of a bunch of different style extensions for getting hard to reach zerks and grease points that don't use zerks at all. You just attach the regular Lock N Lube tip to each extension so you don't have to remove it. I found it very useful for situations just like this.

I'm 35, but feel 80 most days. My 3 year old LOVES your working videos as well. Few service tips from a guy that logs an average of 600 hours a year with a bush hog in tow. Run the brush hog a little before you change the oil to get the oil hot, so it drains WAY easier. Let it sit for about 5 minutes to settle before draining the oil. I honestly prefer to tilt it back by picking it up with the F.E.L and letting it drain from the level check hole. I typically pour a cheap bottle through to flush everything, then put good oil in. Probably not needed unless you torture your equipment. As far as sharpening goes, I'll put the edge back and touch up the chips seeing as I'm typically cutting major brush/overgrowth. If I'm cutting a field I'll sharpen them, then grind from the bottom at a slight angle to put a sharp edge on the blades. That way it's not right on the bottom of the blades for a bit of protection. It seems to hold the edge longer that way as well in fields/light brush. You can also raise your guide wheel 1 or 2" to tilt your blades. It's easier for the bush hog to throw materials out the back, takes less power to cut with, and is really good protection for it seeing as it's just the tips/leading edge of the blades hitting stuff. I'll have a video up soon explaining why I slant mine so much. I even run over some cinder blocks for proof it works... yeah definitely just didn't see them under the grass, but it shows it works nonetheless. 😂

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it doesn't make much sense to tighten the slip clutch bolts to the same tightness you found them in if the clutch wasn't working with those settings. After all, the clutch should slip BEFORE breaking the shear bolt... no? What makes more sense (to me) is to shoot for the 4mm dimension called for in the manual, which is also 0.157" or 5/32" of an inch.

Thought the same thing. Technically you can flush after draining it as much as possible instead of total removal of old oil by siphon or draining. The way you did it is better but many gearbox won't allow you a straight shot to the bottom of the housing with a siphon tube, there's obstructions and sometimes no bottom drain........ therefore flush and go is the proper procedure. Oil analysis will confirm this was done properly if you wanted to take it that far. Well done 👍🏻

Good video! Can you list the part# and what you paid for the new blades? And hey, I'm not "old"! :-))))) 53

@RockhillfarmYT 2 жыл бұрын
I would call 53 a young man but my daughter would not agree. The blades were $117. I just told the parts counter at Deere dealership the model number of the bush hog and I never looked at the part number number

The person who designed the grease location on the shaft at the mower should be taken out and flogged. That is the biggest pain in the butt to get to. They know the area is tight and that the shields are there.....can you tell that is my biggest complaint with my mower. Also, it depends on how you define old. I wasn't around when Moses parted the Red Sea, but I am old enough to have been alive during the Vietnam War.
