Those water pump and timing cover bolts are all different lengths for guys like me who can’t keep track of things. Easier to leave them where they go as you take them out. Just orient them loose, in their original positions. (Or mark them with a paint marker 👌🏼)

Hey Brian thanks for part 2 ,i have followed your tutorial and removed both heads on my 4.7 without removing front the cover as i dont have a rattle gun yet and found 3 seats stuck to the valves. the pistons are good and the head gasket shows no signs of breakage. As i live in New Zealand parts for jeeps are expensive so i will go to machine shop and see what they can do. Your instructions have really helped me to tackle this project with confidence i have a manual to refer to but your videos allow me to see how its done so thanks again for your videos .

I did this about 2 months ago to my 04 with the help of this video. After a 1000 miles I can comment on a couple things. First the "waterfall" sound from the heater core is gone. Second I found the hard way to use genuine Mopar parts, at least the tensioners. I used aftermarket ones and had to change them out after a month the chains rattled so loud at cold start. I knew it was the chains seeing I put solid lash followers in place of the hyd ones and they make a distinctly different sound. Putting Mopar tensioners in quieted it down significantly on cold start, no chain slap at all. Still get a little lifter tick but as the engine warms it goes away and I will say the solids definitely helped performance at the top end.

I have worked on most anything that moves you do an amazing job. Bulkhead comes from the aerospace industry. Its a position that blocks off an area from another and has connection points that allows for throughfare of electrical, control components and hydraulics. The maintenance world is starting to come up with more common phrases across the board. Heavy equipment world has been using bulkhead for a while now as well. Just a matter of time before the automotive industry adopted it.

I've had a rocker arm come off on my dodge. It's pretty common actually. It happens from not changing the oil when you should. The valve lash adjusters get gunked up. You can either replace them or take them apart and clean them real well. I took mine apart and cleaned them up. And started changing my oil more often lol. Haven't had a problem since.

Hi there. Your videos are extremely helpful and I appreciate them. I am reinstalling the timing chains on my 2005 Grand Cherokee 4.7 do to a dowel pin on the passenger side cam shearing off. I have the timing cover and harmonic balancer already off. I rotated the engine so the idler pulley has the dot on 12 o clock and the crank has the dot at 6 o clock. Does that mean piston 1 is at TDC thanks.

To prevent the valve dropping many don’t have properly bled cooling systems. That pocket of hot air in the system creates to fast of a change in temperature between the aluminum head and the cast iron block then poof valve dropped. Same thing happens on the 5.7L Hemi

Great tear down.. Appreciate it..My story.. Old Radiator cracked, leaked all fluid, Cherokee 2000 4.7 over heated extreme, missfire & a P0307. Turns out no compression on #7. Spark has oil on it. Will mess a little more , but definitively don't want to go as far as you did without a shop/tools/ etc.. Without digging in, What's your opinion on oil on the spark? If not fuel intake leak, would it be necessary to strip it down that far? On the model in vid and mine, wouldn't I just be able to pull one side cover off and inspect? Not sure I even want to break the gasket seal.. Time for new car? ;-(

My 4.7 HO engine overheated and some valve rings dropped into one cylinder, but I'm worried that maybe the engine is damaged, though it turns over easily. The alu head also has a 0.015 inch warp. I've only worked on Chevy SBC engines before so this is a big step in complexity. Any advice how I should check the block, maybe for cracks in the cooling system?

Great video Brian. You do quality work. But what happened to the rocker arm? Where did it go? You said somebody was in there before but why would they take out the rocker arm without at least putting it back? What struck the piston? Another mystery.
@Bryan916
@Bryan916 5 жыл бұрын
No mystery here the valve seat fell out keeping the valve from closing all the way and sticking out into the cylinder causing the piston to strike it. I know someone was in there before because it was missing a rocker arm that clearly someone removed! I'm sure you can guess why they remove it!

@@Bryan916 I'm looking at an '02 Durango with good paint and body, clean interior and a very tired sounding 4.7. I have sourced a good reman engine, but they recommend replacing the intake in case there were any bits of valve guide that got impregnated into the walls of the old intake. I wanted to make sure that there weren't any bolt issues or sensor issues. Your different videos have really helped me learn a lot in a very short amount of time. You remind me a lot of Mr. Flockhart, one of my instructors at UTI. He took the time to not only show what to do, but also took the time to explain some of the hows, whys, and whats behind the steps and manufacturing process. Oh, that reminds of another question. When I was looking at some of the engines available, some were described as 16 teeth and others as 32 teeth. I ended up finding one that was compatible with the VIN code "N", and that's what I will be going with. Thanks for the help!

@Bryan916
@Bryan916 4 жыл бұрын
Doesn't matter if it's a Iron block! To much heat will distort any type of metal. You always have the Heads checked for cracks and have it machine true when doing a top End Job this is key to the Repair process! But honestly you can't heat up these 4.7 or the valve seats will fall out my advice to you is find a good Machinist have new valve seats installed along with the other machine work!

@@Bryan916 Thanks that's great! The two down-pipe bolts on the starboard side of the engine are covered by a load of pipes and stuff, do I have to strip all this off or is there an easy way to get to them?

I was attempting to do a compression test on my 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7l, but unfortunately my spark plug socket got stuck in the spark plug bore. I’ve tried to research what to do to get it out but everything I’ve found I either don’t have the tools or I just cannot do what they suggested. How would you handle that sir? Is it still ok to just begin to pull the heads out without compression testing?
@Bryan916
@Bryan916 2 жыл бұрын
If you know you gotta pull the heads any way, might was well start pulling them off. If you are not sure if you need to pull the heads and still trying to find out what's going on then I would work on getting the socket out!

@@Bryan916 my girls truck overheated, broke down, and now it will not start. I already replaced the radiator due to a huge hole in it and it still won’t start. At this point I’m honestly just assuming the truck blew a head gasket based on what I looked up and also what multiple mechanics and friends told me. It does crank and the starter is working fine, no clicking noise or anything like that. It just sucks cuz I wanted to be forsure before I started. I did try to run the diagnostic but that socket got stuck and i really have no clue how to get it out. Too much other components in the way as well. I didn’t want to just jump into but damn lol. Thanks for replying!

Hi Bryan916 we are have a misfire issue with our 2011 jeep grand Cherokee. I know you closed your shop but do know any one locally in Sacramento that could help . Two shops are telling us just to replace the engine at 9k for the low compression on cylinder 3.

You can buy a junk 2011 and just drive both cars to a shoo and say hey ... Put this engine in that one and they will for like 3 grand.. And then you tow truck the parts car to the acrap yard.

valve overlap at the end of the exhaust stroke would make air come out the TB. Is there a timing mark on the damper for cyl 1?
@Bryan916
@Bryan916 5 жыл бұрын
Overlap is when both intake and Exhaust Valves are open momentarily. This does not happen on the compression stroke but on the exhaust stroke. Performing a Cylinder leak test, air would be escaping out the rear tailpipe as well and the T-body this would tell me it's not on the compression stroke but on the exhaust stroke, going back to the point I made in the video!

fire wall or bulk head,, i have always heard it called a fire wall by everyone i have ever worked with,,, the only time it gets called a bulkhead is by the collision estimating program, insurance apraisers ,(who have never actually worked on cars) , or their supervisors,,,and brand new grads from auto tech schools,,, i'm gonna guess that it's always been a bulk head, an engineer would probably call it that,, but as far as i see it, it seperates us from the "firing " motor, so we can be kept safe from catching on fire , hense , the fire wall , that was how it was explained to me by my first boss, Louie Gabriellie ,at maaco,,and he was orriginally a mechanic,, but lots of things have different names, like a jamacian would call the hood a bonnet,, and a trunk lid is called a deck lid,, etc, and so on

It's dumb ass ppl likethat that give good mechanics a bad name. People don't seem to understand that sometimes things that happen to old parts when repairing vehicles and if some brittle part breaks it has to be replaced

@@Bryan916 yup thats why when i was a mechanic i was the one doing all the engine jobs. i worked slow but we never had very many issues when i was done .. usually started right up . lol i used to be able to get the timing within a degree or so before i started them. but thats also why im no longer a mechanic. i never made any money doing it i was too slow. Flat rate can be brutal. but i changed 1978 Ford radius arm bushings in an hour and got paid for 4. that was a good day.
