Flic en Flac has to be the tropical beach destination of Mauritius. Long white sandy beaches, great swimming areas, plenty of places to have a picnic, the shade under the trees or in a small kiosk, hundreds of street food vendors, and dozens of restaurants, not to forget the ample accommodation. When you think of Mauritian beaches, think Flic en Flac.
Head over to the big city for the hustle and bustle: • Port Louis, Mauritius ...
Coming from the northern beaches of Mauritius, we are very discerning in our beach tastes, but Flic en Flac really surprised us. There really is no real comparison to Flic en Flac, when it comes to a beach holiday. We walked the full length of the place, and we could find fault in it, in fact, we kept asking why the second most popular tourist destination in Mauritius is better than the first, Grand Baie. I am sure that will change soon.
We started out walking down the middle bit as we easily found parking straight up, but there seemed to be tons of places to park. Our first great find was the barbeque areas, Grand Baie, pay attention. Some of the barbeque areas even had grates, all ready to start the fires. And they were right next door to a lime kiln. Beautifully preserved, with an unusual shape that Riki likened to an old fashion honey pot. I am still not sure how they got the lime and wood in the top.
After pointing out some fancy restaurants we stopped for some street food. We got a chicken donut, yes I didn't miss type. It was a ring of chicken sausage that had been deep-fried in an egg batter and was surprisingly tasty. Riki also got a chicken samosa, her gauge on how good a place is. She rated it good, but the farata we got was out of this world. Cerf, that means deer or venison, perfectly slow-cooked in a simple gravy it was so soft and tasty, I could have eaten ten, well it was quite large, maybe five. I am defiantly giving that an old-school Bryan Discovers Food 10 out of 10 must eat.
The more we walked along the road, the more diversity in restaurants there were, everything seems to be covered, Chinese, Mauritian, Italian, Indian, Rib joint, fine dining, casual bistros, and even a nightclub complete with a champagne lounge. Yes, we went in and sat on the throne and Riki even played the grand piano. It wasn't all food, there is plenty of beachfront accommodation where ever we looked, and a quick check on Airbnb shows the price started at 25 dollars.
Back to the main beach area with kebabs, fruits, fast foods, and even towels and inflatable animals for sale. There are even more kiosks and sun tanning areas, and it look like this was the best place to have a swim. We couldn't find the toilets here, but there were plenty of others all the way down to the end, so maybe we just missed them. I treated myself to one of the greatest beach pleasures, a fruit cup with chili. We were then off to the marina area.
Calling it a marina is a bit of a stretch, it is more of a place to moor boats. We showed some of the scuba diving centers and I helped reunite some day-old chick with their mom before we head off to the secret beach of Wilma. The perfect place to come if you have your own food, we didn't see any vendor. It is nestled between two 5 star resorts and we got a good look at the Hilton from the beach, there was a security guard watching our every move. They have a big traffic center, but it looked more like a bus terminal and it seems that the center of the island has access to Flic en Flac by bus.
A short stop to point out even more accommodation places and we were off to another apartment to rent, and the home of poor Anna, as Riki likes to call her. The old chimney of the Anna sugar estate. In fine condition and performing her retirement duties as a lawn ornament. Our last stop was baobab street, more impressive houses that are completely overshadowed by a huge baobab tree in the middle of the road.
Flic en Flac is the best beach destination in Mauritius. It is a place you can spend an enjoyable day, a great weekend, or even a bucket list tropical vacation. Flic en Flac should not be missed however you want to enjoy it.

This was my hangout beach growing up as I only lived like 25mins drive away, went camping there with friends so many times. Loved it cos it's never as busy as the beaches up north. It's changed so much now, lots of new tourist apartments and condos around.

Flic en Flac is where we hope to be in November. Not a bad British accent Rikki. Are the Resorts open to general public for meals on the beach? Are they walking distance? I am trying not to get too excited just in case the virus stops us. Thank you so much for sharing ❤

As usual totally enjoyed both of your ‘discovery’ of Flic en Flac. Have fun, you rock ! 👍🏼🇲🇺 For a bit of history of Flic en Flac before it began this jungle of restaurants, holiday homes and hotels: 1. The only restaurant in Flic en Flac was the Chinese restaurant by the angle. A few metres away on the road leading to before the bend was a police station and a Chinese shop, and a bus stop. That’s all ... at the end of the road was the ONLY hotel: La Pirogue, and the cemetery. Not one bungalow was built there. As a member of the swimming club, sometimes I chose to go there for swimming instead of Pereybère, but the quality of the sea bed was of no comparison. Everywhere was planted with casuarinas, and beyond La Pirogue hotel was almost wild like a small forest patch. Nobody swam on that side. The development of what you know as Cascavelle was sugar cane field and beyond it was the point which joined the Macchabé forest and nature reserve. There was nothing there, no morcellement just acres of sugarcane fields, apart from Casela. All the hotels built had to clear a lot of rocks to make way for the beaches we see now. On a sweet note: the phenomenon of pickled fruits (confits) sold across the island and now a must have on beaches originated in Port Louis Chinatown. There has never been any pickled fruits sold in the countryside. People would prepare their own fruit salads from home when they go to the beach for a picnic. The first beach where a seller of confits appeared was Mon Choisy, and from there it picked up. Pereybère was a No-No zone for any street foods. There was only the Chinese restaurant there, and for very long they stood strong as a lobby not to have any sellers on the beach. Similarly, roti and dhal puri selling is a very recent phenomenon (2 decades +). They existed only in Port Louis, Flacq market, And Triolet. Now you find roti sellers on all the public beaches. The lime kiln on Flic en Flac has always remained pristine, but I was shocked to see it turn a dumping ground. A few more bins should be put on the beach for picnickers to use. A monument cannot be used to dump rubbish. Maybe you can pass such civic messages discretely in your videos, since you are so popular now. Monique Koenig ( Friends of the Earth) used to look after these kilns but now she is no more and no one bothers. All the best, continue your journeys and make the world discover all the unknown places to one and all. Thank you for the great job 👍🏼

Thank you so much for the great comment. I really enjoyed reading it. The real history is so often lost in the progress and as it doesn't seem as important as wars, the best bits get forgotten. Thanks again and I will use this information in future videos.

Flic en Flac happens to have the longest wave in the Southern Hemisphere which has resulted in putting it on the world map for surfers. The rip and curl is non stop. Is also the second longest beach with the lagoon offering a live coral reef and no dangerous current.

Another question, are the locals allowed to go on the beach in front of the resorts. Flic or Flaq has massive public beach, but nice to know if we would be able to go to the resorts beaches. Also could one eat like buffet breakfast at the resort or is it only for resort guests?
@BryanDiscoversWorld
@BryanDiscoversWorld 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, up to the high tide line. Most of the resorts do offer dining to non-guests. Not sure on the breakfast buffet, but probably. With some, you can get a day pass to use all their facilities.
