Our apologies for the lost footage. In the last 5 years of doing this it has only happened twice thankfully. Regardless, we only lost one day and we move forward. These late season mule deer hunts are a ton of fun and we're optimistic that we'll get into some good rutting action. Stick with us as we hope to fill 3 buck tags!

Before ONx maps were available we were hunting in the desert one year and it was foggy and overcast. We came up to this fence line that had no markings but thought it was for diverting wild elk away from the highway or some sort. We seen a herd of elk running with one that seemed to be wounded in the back so my buddy decided to shoot at it- luckily he didn't hit her because shortly after they passed a truck came up right behind them and yelled at us saying these are domestic elk! so luckily the bullet didn't connect. Very thankful for OnX maps !

Also this year I had two mule deer bucks. One maybe 185” the other was completely wrapped up in about 50’ of baling twine. I passed on the bigger buck feeling it was the right thing to do. My buck (which you could not see any antlers as they were completely covered in twine) turned out to be a nice mature wide 4x3. Did the right thing in my mind and still ended up with a trophy!!

Years ago after the season was over I was out on patrol and came across a blacktail forked horn (two point for you guys 😂). One of his back legs was shattered at the ankle. He looked for sure like coyote fodder. He could barely move. I could have legally put him down but for some reason I couldn't bring myself to do it. Two years later, during season, just up the ridge a couple hundred yards, I took a heavy antlered 4x3. You guessed it, same ankle, fused mass of healed bone. No doubt it was the same buck. They are tough and resilient.

I can’t believe a taxidermist would do something like that. They deal with so many different hunters you wouldn’t think they would take the chance to be so dishonest. Keep up the good work guys. Love these videos.

When I was young, maybe 13-14 years old. My dad and I were out hunting and were up on a ridge, we heard a shot on the next ridge over. We looked to see if we could see what they got. We saw two guys go down and get to this bear they had shot. We watched them for awhile and saw them cut off a paw or claws and take some pictures then they just left it there. My dad, knowing my grandpa had a tag, went and told my grandpa about it and they decided to put my grandpa’s tag on it and we packed it out.

I have a story! I was elk hunting in North Dakota with a cow tag and came across a bull that someone had shot in the back foot and lower jaw. It was a day or 2 from starving to death or dying of dehydration. After 12 calls to different local game wardens I finally got the go ahead to end its suffering. I was able to end its pain and harvest all the meat. The game warden came out and met us and gave me a salvage tag so I didn’t have to use my once in a lifetime tag on it! He also hauled everything to my pickup on his atv so we had zero pack out. I ended up deciding not to harvest a cow as I already had 2 elk in the freezer from that season and did not need more meat or have room for it.

I took out several people turkey hunting 7 or 8 years ago and had them all take their birds to a “friend” who said he’d have them done in a few months. All 7-8 people put at least half down, some paid in full. The only one who ever got a turkey back was a very large ex marine that pinned him against the wall and told him he’s going home with a turkey or money.

Hunting deer with my dad years ago we seen a bull moose with a front right broken leg, when he walked or ran he used his broken leg (elbow down flopped around). He had antlers that grew like a long horn from Texas on both side, maybe 2’ long. We had no tag and all we could do was report what we seen to the conservation officer.

Good call going after a wounded animal. Not a deer but focused on a Javelina that was wounded one year here in Az. Could have killed others but decided to keep after that one. Ended up getting a 10 yard shot on it and filled a tag. It had been shot just above the knee with a bow and the bone was shattered.

I would take an injured animal no problem. I think as hunters it’s the right thing to do. Taking care of our herds is a big responsibility. On the other hand, I’m not going to put someone down for not taking an injured deer. Everyone needs to make their own decision. Love the videos and thank you for taking us along.

I dropped an antelope of to be euro mounted. I asked for it to be with no platform just skull and horns. Cane back with a platform that it was glued onto. I stated that I specifically asked for no platform he found it in his notes that I had requested that. He explained that he tried a new gluing system on the skull and said there would be no issues and no money back for the mess up. I took it home, I lived less than 200yds away. When I hung the antelope on the wall as I stepped off the ladder the skull fell from the wooden platform hitting me on the head, cutting my forehead, then falling to the ground and breaking the nose off the antelope. I brought it back same evening, bleeding from my forehead and broken pieces in hand. He tried to tell me it was my fault and charge me for repairs. (I did not pay for.) Finally once he repaired it weeks later he glued it back to the wood platform. What a horrible experience. In regards to Casey's question. My wife shot a small 2 point on a rifle mule deer rut hunt as we noticed it had been wounded and would not make it. Upon harvesting he had cut his groin area. We would both make the same decision every time. Thank you HUSH crew for sharing your hunts. We truly enjoy our family nights watching the newest episode after dinner.

RE: Wounded animals - Western Wa, I lived on acreage and had blacktail around all the time. Brand new fawn (maybe 2 days old) and one of its front legs was completely broken, only hanging on by what seemed to be a little skin. I figured for sure it was coyote or lion bait & wouldn't make it. I didn't see it again .. until several months later. It's leg had healed with a large calcium deposit and it was limping a little, but getting around well and looked healthy. Tough animals, as we know. Bad taxidermy stories .. thankfully no.

My first archery bull ever, took it to a taxidermist and a few months later he posts that he’s going out of business and moving. So I hit him up, he said yeah i started on your elk but won’t be able to finish and I’d have to come pick it up and take it to another taxidermist to finish. I went to his shop, he wasn’t there, the rack and hide(inside a trash bag) was sitting outside by the front door, ivories gone, hide ruined, and skull cut flat so I couldn’t euro mount it. And he never gave me back my $500 deposit. First and worst experience lol

About 25 years ago I shot a double, mating pair of California mountain quail, in pristine condition. Took them to a local taxidermist, paid up front to have the pair mounted, was told it would be about 6 months. After 6 months I tried calling him on and off for over a year, to no avail. Finally swung by his shop to notice he was gone and closed down.. So pissed 😤

Nothing has personally happened to me, but my father actually shot one of the biggest deer he has ever shot; upper 160s whitetail and brought it to the taxidermist said waiting time was a year and needed a 50% down payment. well year after year he contacted the guy and never got a response. Finally he got a hold of him and the taxidermist responded with "I don't know where that head is." And still to this day, 10+ years ago his head is still gone.

I had a similar experience many many years ago when I lived in Wyoming. I had shot an absolutely beautiful pronghorn. My brother knew of a 'good' taxidermist so I let him take it. I waited 3 years. Finally my brother told me the guy admitted that he had somehow ruined the hide in the process. I'm certain the guy has it hanging on his own wall.

We had a driver come to us and ask us to put a down a deer that had been hit by a car. We knew we couldn't do that unless it was an antlered deer. . We found it later on and it was a buck with a broken leg. After talking about it we sent my son who was 12 years old at the time after it. He had never killed a archery deer. The buck was alert and my son had to stalk him several times before he could a shot but he made a sweet 30 yard heart shot and dropped the buck. The cool thing about it was my son had almost shot the same buck the year before. Super fun day and the none of the meat was bad. That buck was actually delicious.

Yes i have had a taxidermist steal our money. Gave him my sons largest deer along with my wifes first bobcat. He went out of biz about 5 years ago and we didnt hear from him about a refund or getting our stuff back. Two years later, I got a tip from a friend who said what town he lived in now. We drove 45 minutes to drive the streets in this town and found his house (we knew the vehicle to look for and it was a small town). SO....we got the antlers and hides back. Fast forward to this christmas and my wife shot a decent buck with a large body. we caped that deer and are using it for my sons deer mount this (2020) xmas. The original taxidermist did not refund us the money we gave him (50 percent of the total), and the bobcat and deer hides are destroyed. Cant replace the bobcat, but at least we were able to recover my sons antlers.

I live in tucson arizona. I took a 180" mule deer to a taxidermist named Clyde Weakly. I got my mount back a little more than a year later. He called and asked a week after I got the deer back if he could take him to a mule deer foundation dinner . I said yes and handed him over. A week later I learned his house burned down along with my mount. Clyde changed his phone number 3 times that I know of and I can not get access to his property. 3 years later I still have not got my deer back and am heart broken as this is the best deer I. I shot a trophy antelope years ago. 16 inches plus on both sides. Took it to a taxidermist. He said it was the largest he’d gotten that year. He said it would be done in six months. I then couldn’t get hold of him and found he’d moved to another part of the town. I went in and said yes, I’ve come to get my antelope. I noticed it wasn’t hanging on the wall but others were. He mumbled that he’d tried to get hold of me but couldn’t so he figured I wasn’t coming in so he’d sold it. After my initial shock I asked, who’d you sell it to? He said oh, some random out of state guy who liked it and thought it would look nice in his office. I got hold of the fish and game about him but long story short I never did get my trophy. Get a lot of reviews of past customers before you pick a taxidermist.

I agree Casey. I would have had the same plan. I actually have. I jave harvested a few does during archrey season here in Idaho for that very reason. Not sure what happened to the first guy that jad tried to harvest them but, I did what I thought was right and ethical. At the end of the day why waste meat even if it wasn't what I would have chosen to shoot.

As a matter of fact this same scenario played out just this year elk hunting third season in Colorado. Glassed up a lone rag horn limping heavily, favoring his left front leg. I assumed he had been shot. Buddy of mine was closer so he took it down. Come to find out his leg was busted, not shot. That leg and shoulder was damn pretty ripe. Ended up discarding the entire quarter. Took everything else. Damn good eating. We all felt good about putting him down. Being shot seems far more humane than being killed by a mountain lion or slowly and painfully dying of blood poisoning.

2013 I drew a branch bull tag for WA state. Found a 300 or so 6x6 that appeared to have a broken hind leg. Watched him for 2 days looking for a bigger bull, day 3 I harvested that bull, it couldn’t run, upon butchering it had been shot by a bow hunter. The bone had grown over the arrow, but I harvested him because I knew he wouldn’t make it through the winter. Meat was good, that’s my main reason for hunting. It also took me 9 years to draw that tag, so hopefully I’ll draw it again and get one of the bigger bulls in that unit. Thanks for sharing your journey

I had a whitetail once, in Minnesota forest land, follow my tracks up under my stand, walk 20 yards away and then turn and stand at a complete right angle from me. Perfect shot. He had one regular antler and one completely deformed, dwarf antler as though last year somebody shot him in the head. He wasn't getting any girlfriends. I put him down. He wasn't pretty, but he took the time to find a hunter to help him out of his misery.

I had a similar situation this year with a wounded buck. His front ankle was three times normal and non weight bearing. Took him with bow. Upon inspecting appeared to be bullet wound through ankle blowing out bone on inside of ankle just turning green with infection. Have photographs.

My concern with taking out a wounded animal is the potential there could be significant damage to a lot more than you can see on the outside. What if the meat was nasty or spoiling? I had a small buck in my scope that had a huge growth on his chest and I passed thinking that the meat may be bad. Let nature do nature.

I’ve never had that kind of problem with a taxidermist. I guess that is because I’ve never been able shoot anything that would not get me laughed at by a taxidermist! Hahaha!!

I have actually taken a buck before that had his left hind leg blown to hell from the knee down. It was a nice 5x4, but the sad thing was that I had to take him on somebodies front yard. The guy just happen to live right next to one of my father in laws wheat fields and I hadn't shot a buck yet at that point. I actually felt sorry for the buck, because who ever originally shot him made a horrible shot!

Last year I found a buck that had basically run himself to death from the rut. He'd caught himself in briars and vines and couldn't get his rack out. You can see the video on my channel.

40 years ago I tagged my first deer...a spike drop tine who was limping badly. I remember telling my dad I just felt bad for him struggling across the sage flats. Couldn’t be prouder, many deer later, of that little buck.

It has happened to me before the deer was already shot we waited to see if any other hunters would come looking for him we didn’t see anyone looking for a blood trail or anything so I took a shot at him not sure if I hit him or missed but I thought he went behind some trees so we waited and gave him time to sit then when we went to go look for him we could never find him

Dropped off a scrapper buck with slit ear. When I picked it up, no slit in the ear. Pretty sure the cape is from a doe. Buddy dropped off an antelope buck same guy never to be seen again.

I was hunting a bull only hunt last year in Idaho and found a paralyzed cow elk (from a poached spine shot). I went back and forth about what to do, then I shot her in the neck to put her out of her misery. I called the game warden, it took no less than six hours for them to get to me (I had gutted, investigated bullet path from the road, etc) and all the while feared I was going to lose my license in the state for three years. The warden showed up, I walked him through what I saw and why I did what I did, then he thanked me for not wasting the elk and took the meat to a local family in need. No license suspension, though I was sure I would pay for putting that cow out of her misery. Do what is right, but hope for the best.

I've had 3 animals mounted by a guy that did it in his garage for a fraction of the cost and time. The oldest one is 20 years old and still looks as good now as it did when I picked it up. Just amazing work. The key is to find one of those guys. I lost his phone number and have been unable to get ahold of anyone that knows him. There's no way i'd trust anyone with a huge deposit on a job that may be a year and half out. Way to much to go wrong there.

Funny you mention taxidermy issues. I'm currently fighting one. Killed a nice javalina in SW Texas Dec. 2017. Its now Jan 2021. Have paid $200 to date towards a rug with skull insert. Have called religiously, and always get the run around. Last 6 months, no response to my calls, emails, and texts. May take legal action on them. Let me know if you want the name of the taxidermist. Would be happy to throw them under the bus. They have a website.
