@@fileinterrupted1787 it's an irritant so use gloves but aside from that it's perfectly safe for humans and animals. I'd recommend using the spray, mid july, late August and mid September. 3 sprays on any brassicas or other susceptible plants should keep them safe for the season :)

It was an ornamental plant. The correct mixing ratio can be found on the label of the product you are using. Even with one chemical the mixing ratio can vary based on the concentration of the product and the plant you are using it on.

If you know for sure that it is caterpillars then use BT. I get a brand called "Monterey BT " but Safer brand is also effective. BT is a LIFESAVER from caterpillars! Find out what is eating them for sure and then you'll know what to spray!

You should be able to spray anytime. The bacteria is not what kills the caterpillars. It is the toxins the bacteria produce.

Bt should not burn plants. To be safe read the label and see if it gives directions on times of day to use the product.

The horn worms usually don't eat the fruit but they will defoliate a tomato plant in a day or two. Other worms do like the fruit like the tomato fruit worm and corn earworm. All of them are effectively controlled by BT. I just watch for damage or the horn worms' telltale droppings - they look like small hand grenades - then spray. If I think there is only one I will just find it and pick it off.

The affect on the plants is that the caterpillar must eat some of the plant that has Bt on it. So you will have a very small amount of insect damage. once the caterpillar ingests the Bt it will almost immediately stop feeding and die. The Bt is a stomach poison to caterpillars. It does not have any affect on humans or other mammals or other animals. With any other insecticide you need to make sure you are applying the correct pesticide for the problem. Also, be aware that you need to be aware of what you don't want to kill. For example, if you are trying to grow milkweed for monarch butterflies don't put Bt on the milkweed. It will kill the monarch caterpillars.

It kills all caterpillars so you have to make sure you are not applying it to a plant being eaten by a "good" caterpillar.

Bt can be used on lawns to kill caterpillars. It will not hurt the lawn. Read the label for information about how much to use. The label may also say not to use it when the sun is shining to avoid burn. Always read and follow the label.

Carpenter ants are hard to control. The insecticide needs to be applied inside the nest. Baits can be effective, but they are of limited use. It is probably best to hire a licensed pest control company that has experience with carpenter ants. You can. The insecticide label probably has the amount you have to put in a gallon. You would just need to do some math to adjust that to the size of your spray bottle.

It depends on the product you have. The label will have that information. Often the amount will be based on an area, so you need to figure out how much spray will cover the plants in that area and mix accordingly.

It does. The great thing though is that caterpillars only seem to do one thing in life: eat. If the Bt was on the plant for only a few hours any caterpillar that has been feeding on the plant has ingested some.

From cucurbitan…..the bitter toxins in bitter gourds. It causes nausea, diarrhea and can kill humans. Look up bitter gourd poisoning. You will also get sick of it is not washed off properly because it can leach into the soft flesh of fruits. So don’t use it on tender skinned things like berries or beans or the foods you eat the skin of as a precaution. Soaking your veggies in water can leach a good portion of the toxins from the skins. Will it prevent bugs from eating it? Yes. Can it also make you sick? Yes. My suggestion is to plant your own bitter gourds and make your own without any processed chemicals. It comes from the juice and it’s so bitter that one gourd will go a very long way. Just make sure you wash the skins off and leave them to soak in some water until they are sweaty clean. You always notice a film on home grown veggies. Make sure they squeak. Remember that this is a poison, but a natural one used in nature to deter pests from eating the gourds when the seeds are viable. It’s the cold season now……go buy some gourds to use next year and save the seeds so you have your own supply. Good luck to you all as we try and provide the best for our lives and families. Remember that people lie…..it is just as toxic to humans as to bugs without precautions. Think of it like soap….because in some cultures it is used as soap. You must wash it off.

Bt kills caterpillars, but it does not kill other insects. Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) is a bacteria that produces a protein that is activated in the high pH gut of a caterpillar. The protein then breaks down the digestive tract of the caterpillar which causes it to die. There are several strains of Bt. Another strain is used to kill mosquito larvae. BT can be purchased at any nursery or big box home improvement center. It might be sold under a trade name so you will have to read the ingredients list. One common trade name is Thuricide.

To figure out how much to use read the label on the side of the BT bottle. Different manufacturers have different concentrations so there is no one set amount to use.
