The song, the thought behind and the intricate details in the music video as well as the explanation video by Italian Army moved me very much. Incidents like the Sewol Ferry disaster and particularly seeing how the government and media dealt with it make me realise that humanity still has a very long way to go.
This was a hard reaction to film and I debated even putting it up since I'm acutely aware of the fact that we are talking about a real life tragedy here in which many people lost their lives or their loved ones. BTS honouring the lives lost in this tragedy won't bring those people back, but the music video and the song educate people like me who weren't aware of the incident and will be a reminder not to forget while portraying to the younger generation that the world can be changed through their efforts, that they can bring about 'Spring'.

I’m Korean, at that time when the Sewol ferry was drowned, all the Korea citizens were shocked about the accident and the way government treated it... Me and my family cried so hard when we watched news everyday. It still hurts me so bad.. The fact that they were mostly students, it really made all the Koreans so sad, that young kids died without knowing what’s happening. 304 out of 476 died.. Still here in Korea, in order to commemorate them, we have an huge annual memorial event in the day the accident happened. What’s most hopeful is that we never forget. And im happy that foreigners get to know about this and commemorate with us..

I was in Korea when this happened and again a few years later. It was so horrific at the time and as more information came to light, it just made things so much worse. I clearly remember during my second trip there, watching as the parents of the dead children marched on the streets, pleading for the truth to be told. I cried as I watched them carrying pictures of their now deceased children. All they wanted was for the truth to be told, for justice for their children. It is one of the most hauntingly painful memories of my time there. There is a reason this song has remained in the charts in Korea since it was first released.

I am a Korean who lives oversea. I happened to be in Korea duringSewolho tragedy. I could not believe. Never thought those things could happen! I was not a fan of BTS then, but I heard of them visiting the families of the victims, donate money and made a song like this. It is more than you think. At that time, there was a "Blacklist" of the people in art and culture who the government suppressed badly. BTS and Big Hit made movements of these despite the suppression from the government. It is truly more than just dedication of a song to the victims. Jimin also joined the hashtags of little girl's death recently. Suga, Hoseok, Jimin and Jin secretly helped minors in the society. I really respect BTS for their true compassion in life and others. In Korea, Spring Day has stayed in charts. It is the song we cannot forget.

BTS was almost nothing when they and Bang PD went to the funeral and even donated money. (It was 2015 and the intensity between Park's supporters and Sewol's was extreme) If the government decided to destroy the group and Big Hit, nobody would care and it was very likely to happen. I respect BTS and Big Hit for that.

Recently in Esquire interview Jin was asked about Spring Day. Quote from the article: / Fair enough, but there is an undeniable allusion, in both the song’s video and its cover concept, to a specific incident in recent South Korean history. “Spring Day” was released just a few years after the sinking of the Sewol ferry, one of the country’s biggest maritime disasters, in which a poorly inspected, overloaded ferry toppled in a sharp right turn. Hundreds of high school students drowned, having obeyed orders to stay in their cabins as the boat was going down. According to some reports, the South Korean government actively tried to silence entertainers who spoke out against it, with the Korean Ministry of Education fully banning the tragedy’s commemorative yellow ribbons in schools. I ask whether it was about a specific sad event, and Jin tells me, “It is about a sad event, as you said, but it is also about longing.” The song kept the disaster front of mind for young Koreans and for the media, indirectly leading to the impeachment and removal of then president Park Geun-hye. /

RM has since (more recently/now that they have more power and the guilty parties have less power) confirmed that this song and mv is about the tragedy. The captain is currently serving 36 years for murder, 14 other crew members were convicted of murder (1 person), abandonment, violating marine laws etc. Three crew members however died trying to save the kids. Bless them. 😢💜

I'm not Korean but I remember seeing this horrific incident in the news broadcasted in our country. As a parent myself, my heart bleeds for those parents who have lost their children to this tragedy. The worst thing a parent can experience in life is the death of a child. I have lost 2 of my children that's why this incident really pulled on my heartstring and tear ducts as well as sending chills all over my body. This is just too harrowing. The government's response to this disaster is unacceptable. The ship's captain and the crew who abandoned those poor children, are they even human?

Thank you so very much for choosing to watch this longer but way more detailed & so well researched heartbreaking, but so informative vid that Italian Army made for all of us, to get a so much better informed, understanding of this tragedy. As well as BTS's honoring the lost loved children, young teens, as well as all the long agonizingly suffering parents, who will forever mourn this so unspeakable loss!! She even notices the most minute references that many might have overlooked in this amazing so tragically sad but so exquisitely made MV, that won that year for the best MV! This song is also to this day staying on the charts as it always will!! At least, thanks to this horrendous tragedy, that was like the final last straw, the Corrupt president was finally impeached in 2017!! There is another vid, that is much shorter that most react to, that's not bad, but leaves so much out! So I appreciate so much your willingness to see this longer but so worthy to watch one instead!! When this vid came out that president was still in power, and indeed blacklisted any artist whontalked about this at the time!! So BTS even kept hidden the money they donated to the families, as well as to talk about the ultimate meaning behind this song!! But still, even without that, it's still a so beautiful but so sad song about loss and missing loved ones but yet as BTS always do try to make it uplifting by saying there will be spring (hope) again as life will go on and continue!! Even the choreography reflects n the meaning, like when all members move to & fro, usually wearing billowy shirts to represent either sails or the waves! At one point they even all stand arched, like the a capsized ship with just the bow showing! Jimin at one point in a sitting position reaching his hand out but then gets swallowed or engulfed by the other members in the choreo near the beginning! In the very end, Jimin sitting again with reached out hand, and Jin coming towards him to hug and comfort him as either a rare survived or one who misses a loved one who didn't survive. If one watches closely, many of their choreo reflects and interpreting the lyrics of the songs through dance!!

The whole tragedy of the Sewol ferry is heart-breaking and there are a ton of documentaries on it, one is available on KZfaq. But to briefly explain why the police or the Coast Guard weren't helping and approaching the ferry was that the president, at the time, instructed them not to (which of course doesn't excuse them from also being partially at fault because first of all, in a critical time where children's lives are at stake, it's their sworn duty to help and there were recorded conversations of higher-ups from the police that were truly despicable). Also, love that you chose this video because, I'm not sure, but I think the creator of it personally went to South Korea and met with the victims. It's such a well-loved song, not only in Army but in South Korea in general, as seen in its ability to never leave charts since its first debut.

Thanks for reacting to Spring Day and chose this explanation video to react to. No shoot comes without carrying meaning in BTS MV. BTS truly is the voice of the youth, they are not only speaking of the feelings of growing up but also how young people looks at society, Am I wrong, GoGo, Baepsae are all good examples. As a parent, their songs got me realized a lot of new challenges the young generations are facing, also made me think about how to raise my own children in a different way. That's why I am an ARMY.

Thank you for the sincerity of your reaction. Spring Day always breaks my heart, yet somehow heals me too. I see a lot of tragedy in my work, and SA has more than its share...As I type, Cape Town is burning, students are risking their lives trying to save the university from burning down, but already the great library has been lost, it’s the oldest university in the country...I won’t go in to the loss of life yet, it’s not over. We have floods, train disasters, school bus accidents, shootings (Marikana comes to mind here - the police shit and killed 34 unarmed miners who were protesting in 2012)...I know every country has terrible tragedies, but corruption is rampant in government here, and money that is supposed to improve the lives of the poor is siphoned off in the billions. And it is covered up. Denied. 💔

I appreciate your reacting to this particular explanation theory video as most people prefer the other version for whatever reason. I feel this explanation is more detailed and provides an impact on a more intimate level by showing the families grief and frustration with the entire situation. While some may say that Suga’s part is referring to lyrics he’d written about a friend under different circumstances, there’s no denying the parallels between the lyrics and mv to the tragedy that occurred. I could see that both videos were painful for you to absorb and rightfully so, but I also feel it’s important to do so if for no other reason than to “never forget”. Thank you.

It's already been 7years since then. But it didn't stop me cry while watching the clips on that tragic day. Accidents can happen but why they didn't try to save the people? They even stopped civil divers and anyone who tried to save people. Moreover the president Park and her government and her party used this tragedy as political issue and made the family of deceased look those who wanted only money out of their childern' s deaths. My father (a strong supporter for Park even now) gets all crazy when seeing the yellow ribbon because he blames the Sewol Family for Park's impeachment. So me and my siblings are all very careful for him not to see the ribbons on our bags. I thought it would be ok to watch the video clips about Sewol Ferry after 7 years but it wasn't. It still hurts. We still don't know the reason of the accident. Some journalists found out many important records were fabricated from the very begining. But why? Anyway thank you for the reaction. Always sincere reaction. Oh, one more thing I wish you to know is that expressing any slightest support towards Sewol family was realy dangerous thing for singers, actors, etc. before the president Moon (the president in office, he fought with the Family). The problem was that when Spring Day came out (and when the incident happened) Korea was still being governed by a corrupt President so they tried to hide the incident from the parents and the country and when they couldn’t hide it any longer they tried to force everyone to move on As a result of the government coming down on those who spoke out abt the incident, BTS never explicitly stated that this song was for the victims and the friends/family of the victims. Still, the writing is on the wall and many Koreans recognized what BTS was trying to say with this song and MV I just want to thank BTS once again for being courageous enough to stand up to their corrupt government at the time (Korea held mass protests that ended with her impeachment). *AND* this was the 2nd song where they blatantly called out the government that year after they released a song called “Am I Wrong” on the original wings album. THAT ONE almost genuinely got them blacklisted from the government bc they straight up quoted them and everything. Beautiful Reaction! I love that you took your time to read and understand everything! This song has a special meaning to me, because it was the first BTS song I've listened to. Shortly after listening to springday I learned about the Sewol Ferry accident through this Italian Armys video, just like you. Knowing that BTS spoke about such an important topic in this artistic but yet clear way - I mean you can feel meaning of the song even without knowing any korean- this just made me fall in love with BTS. Even though I am not korean I was deeply moved when I learned all the details about the Sewol Desaster. I think it is important to teach people about this kind of events, in order to prevent them from happening again. Not just in korea but all over the world (Every country is corrupt, some more than others but none is perfect). But it also gives hope -just like the song springday- that it will get better, and that if you keep fighting your voice will eventually be heard and can change the world! Btw, are you german? I see the Tinten-Triologie in the background (if I am not mistaken) but you've got the british HP Version? If you are german, then your english is amazing! I wish my pronounciation was half as good as yours!

RM wrote the lyrics to this in just 15 minutes while sitting in a park, so I think the original song was more about longing for someone lost to you in a more general way. But they chose to make it about the Sewol ferry tragedy in the MV. Maybe you could watch the other popular explanation video in your own time. They are both good but with emphasis on different aspects. The other one interprets the boys as survivors dealing with loss and guilt (save some scenes with Jin, ever the pivotal character in MVs) and explains the connection to the book and the movie more. This one is much more detailed about the ferry incident and the political intrigue behind it. To this day I'm somewhat amazed that the captain of the ferry got a sentence for murder (> 30 ys of prison). This would not be possible in Germany. And I don't remember the capatin of the Costa Concordia getting a very harsh punishment either.

Hi Hanna! This video was as hard for me to watch as it clearly was for you. I knew it was about a tragedy at sea but was unaware of all the details. I'm Italian, so I could easily follow the original video and I wonder if the italian Army who created it (and did a great job) has been inspired to talk about it by a similar episode that happened here in Italy in 2012, the shipwreck of the cruise ship Costa Concordia, in which 32 people died. In case you're interested, this is the Wikipedia link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Costa_Concordia_disaster. I couldn't help but think of it, although the two situations bear both similarities and significant differences.

Suga cowrote spring day and he said he was inspired in a past friendship in his hometown and that song released last year have similar lyrics and vibe as spring day, so it seems ( it's not confirmed) that's the friend he was talking about.

Spring day Spring Day is a tribute by BTS to the Sewol Shipwreck, a maritime accident that took the lives of 304 people. 172 survived, and this is the story told in the MV: those who were left behind with the weight of guilt for having stayed alive. BTS represents survivors who are going through a time of mourning and cannot overcome the loss. RM even walks among the belongings abandoned by the victims. The scene is related to the film Expresso do Amanhã, directed by Bong Jong-ho (the director of Parasita, a film that won the category of Best Film at the Oscars of 2020), in an analogy between the train cars occupied by different classes and, when RM tries to move forward, facing unfair differences, he is attacked by the rest. Omelas, which appears in the video as an establishment, is the name of a fictional city from the book The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas, about a society that grew out of childhood suffering. About 250 passengers of the accident were young students whose deaths were minimized by the Korean government, which, on the day of the incident, reported that it was "just a maritime accident", without any compassion for the victims and their families, and Spring Day indirectly criticizes that.

The song itself was not written about the Sewol Ferry tragedy, but it struck such a cord with the S. Korean people that BTS embraced this and the MV is definitely a tribute. Spring Day has not left the music charts in S. Korea since its release. They did a live performance at an award show where the entire LCD screen behind them is underwater. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/frKmh9phsdnNgn0.html

I think it’s good to remember these things are always theories. So there might be hit and misses in regards to their meaning. We aren’t often given confirmation In this case the song itself from what we know was initially Namjoon missing friends. And missing Yoongi. So he said. It’s good to remember they usually work in their songs for a very long time. So we are not sure how much overlap there is However, the MV is very clearly a reference to the tragedy. We don’t know if all the details are though or intended in this way. But the overall meaning is true They visited families affected. They also donated. Many of these stories didn’t come out until much later bc the families wanted to protect them. I find it so beautiful that they use their art this way

I think the MV with all the metaphors is clearly about the sewol farry tragedy while the song itself leaves room for a more general interpretation of longing and loss. I personally think spring day was made to remember the lost children and to console people involved but to also criticise the korean government and the class and power structure which led to the horrible outcome of the sewol farry incident and is also at fault for many more tragic events that happen in society. BTS is known to be government critical and to voice their opinions on societal issues so to me it makes sense that spring day was made to make these points. And then i think to not have to face censorship or bad backlash by the korean government they made their massege more subtle. And i also think they made the lyrics in a way that the general public and international fans can relate to it aswell without knowing what the deeper meaning behind it could be. Thats just my interpretaion of it all tho

last year in bts interview for Esquire the journalist asked them if spring day was about a sad event and jin said "yes its about a sad event but its also about longing" im sure if you Google bts Esquire interview youll find it the entire article is amazing but that part especially shocked everyone because we werent expecting them to ever talk about it so directly more than what theyve done in the past. i also saw a article where the families of the victims were interviewed and they mentioned bts and how because of their kindness and support at that time they pray for bts to this day. you may be able to find it on Twitter but im not sure exactly where one of the translators had translated it. also bts song Am I Wrong is some what connected to this as well. bts called out a government official in am i wrongs lyrics and the choreography and they only ended up performing this song on tv stations 2 or 3 times when normally they would perform songs on music shows for a few weeks.

It was baffling to me too-how they could let this happen. Until I read somewhere that they were probably hiding smuggled/illegal cargo in the ship, so if the ship survived, the people behind the illegal activity would be exposed. It seemed like the lives of children were a small price to pay versus being being caught. This whole incident is just so horrifying. The Spring Day choregraphy/dance practice is one of my favorites out of all their choreo. I hope you could check it out too.

The thing about the coast guard was that they had given most of their money to a person of power above them, so they had to cut back on money expenses. The place they chose to cut back on was training the new recruits. The coast guard quite literally didnt know how to do their job due to corruption and greed for money. They took more than the boat could handle, the captain of the boat had been in sinkings before, and they made sure they were safe first. Peoples greed knows no bounds.

It's ok to not talk much about the tragedy. You're right that not being there makes it hard for you to comment on it. It's a good decision to restrain your thoughts on the matter if it feels correct and respectful to not get into it. ARMY recommends Spring Day, not to judge the incident, but to shine a light on how BTS stands out from the typical "boy band" by taking such risks, and by pushing for change in thoughtful, hopeful ways. And of course, credit to BigHit for their part in this too. Now you'll understand why references to Spring, and the Spring Day tree, in subsequent videos, makes us emotional. Not because of the sense of loss... but of the belief that in the darkest times, it's ok to believe that Spring will come.

It is the correct interpretation. It was a tragedy which could have been prevented but it wasn't. And even after all it happened govt. Just looked away at the unfairness. The victims didn't get justice. The captain of the ship instead of saving the students chose to leave them in the ship and left to die. And many big names in Korea also ignored this. But bts was different. They went and visited the site and made a beautiful song.

Suga’s verse can also tie in with his song “Dear my Friend “ from his 2nd mixtape Agust D-2 . His verse in spring day matches with his song Dear my friend as it sounds like it was meant for his friend who he misses and had a falling out with. Also a really good personal song from him. Suga has mentioned that he doesn’t have a lot friends and so when he came out with Dear my friend, and shared the experience he had with losing his friend due to personal choices the other made which made them fall out was sad as it happens to a lot of people.

Thank you for the reaction to that explanation video. I'd never seen that one before and learned a lot of new information and ways to interpret the MV. I guess I was used to reactions to the explanation video by bulletproof vests (I think), where the Snowpiercer references are more of a focus point imo, and it's more of a shot-by-shot interpretation. While I don't agree with every bit of interpretation in that one, I would still recommend it though as a watch-by-yourself thing, if you ever have a spare moment. For the Sewol Ferry Tragedy there are a couple of documentaries out there, but the reasons why it happened the way it did are basically gross incompetence, negligence and nobody wanting to take responsibility for a decision about evacuation.

Along with the stuff I will tell you about the Highlight Reel, I will add the story connections many see in the spring day video. We have no confirmation about the meaning of what the VIDEO means. Some will mention Jin and the Esquire interview but the way Jin worded his answer it sounded as he wasn't confirming or denying it was about the tragedy. He was asked if it was about a "certain" (and that was emphasized) event and Jin responded it was about an event. Jin is always careful with his wording and I believe he did this purposefully because they have always maintained that this video can mean what you need it to mean. Political pressure isn't really an issue now so confirming wouldn't be dangerous but I think they want to leave the meaning floating so as many people as possible can relate to it in their own way. It's par and course for how they treat their music and videos. Oh but they did confirm what the SONG means. Suga and RM wrote it about missing friends.

I think a lot of artists do this, because that's what makes their work more powerful and have more of an impact. Even though the artists themselves might have something specific in mind when writing the lyrics or filming the MV, it can certainly be interpreted in different ways by the people listening/watching. I think one tends to interpret things in a way that speaks most to oneself and because we are all different people, we all have different interpretations and different songs mean different things for us. My dad is a painter and he doesn't name his paintings or talks about the technique he used, because he says it's just important to him that the painting speaks to the person observing it, everything else is a distraction and shapes their thoughts too much in a certain direction (by example by giving a title).

@@YouandMe14 They released this song at a time when there was political chaos. The president was asked to impeach and step down by the general public. Anyone and anything that was spoken against the government was tried to supress. Artists were blacklisted left and right because of their political views. BTS were lucky enough not to be blacklisted. The lyrics in 'AM I WRONG' by bts was also quite political and risky----Suga references the avian metaphor to refer to people looking to achieve more in life, but it’s his inclusion of “dogs and pigs” that is the real clincher: the song's 2016 release came shortly after a Ministry of Education official, Na Hyang-wook, reportedly said that South Korea needs a caste system, and described the average person as "dogs and pigs"who should be treated as such. Suga’s rap doesn’t overtly address the situation, but its inclusion wouldn’t be lost on South Korean listeners and is one of the group's most political moments.

You and Me also RM and suga said that they wrote it inspired in their experiences in friendships , RM referring to his friendship with suga himself ( the know each other the longest ) and suga to a past friendship in his hometown. The thing is that suga last year on his second mixtape, the last song its called "dear friend" that talks about a lost friendship and the lyrics and vibe are really similar to spring day . I won't spoil you the story , i recommend you to heard it with accurate translation like in genius page ( not code color videos on KZfaq ). Again he haven't confirmed that spring day is about this friend but again it's hard not to see the similarities and is also about a lost friendship that affected him a lot.

Just as a little bit about diving.. People often have this idea, its "just" to dive. But it isnt.. Its pitch black under water at night.. And people tend to forget that there are underwater currents... If its storm weather the sea will be worse. If the current is stronger than what a person can swim in, they cant dive.. If they need expert divers, the % of available divers are even lower, and to dive into a sunken ship, because the corridors will be like a cave system, the chances of divers dying also go up, then you have even less divers to dive.. The coast guard did not have local divers who could dive there, but there were normal people who could and DID help when they were finally allowed too. Also, divers can not dive to long or often, and I know the ones who did help (when they were finally allowed too) dived waaay more than they should have. Why did they deny expert diver to dive, no clue. Orders from higher ups I think, and with them.. who knows. But the fishing boats that COULD have helped before the ship fully sank, should have been allowed to break open windows and rescue people. The coast guard failed LOOOOONG before divers were even needed. There are a lot of good documentaries on youtube about this, I highly recommend you look some up if you are interested in learning more =)
