You’re right, RM and Suga wrote this song about friends they had lost/fell out of touch with and about loss and grief in general, like you were saying jenny. The music video is what is connected to the sewol disaster. For many years bts couldn’t openly speak about this since all artists who did address the tragedy were blacklisted by the government, but in a magazine article last year jin confirmed that “yes, it is about a sad event” - so it’s no longer a theory but confirmed. BTS also donated money to the victims’ families in secret. We call spring day “the queen” (suga called it their zombie song haha) because it has never once left the korean charts since its release 5 years ago! I hope you can see both dance practices (the serious one and the funny one!) one day to appreciate the choreo. You can see they do a boat/ship formation at one point :)

Yes and about the choreo there is also a live show where the background was all underwater themed which I think also tied into the ferry disaster.

I think people need to understand the political climate of Korea at the time Spring Day was released a little better before trying to speak on it. Spring Day was released after the president lost all presidential power and was basically one vote (that was already guaranteed) away from being impeached and going to jail. NO one would have been 'blacklisted' for speaking about the Sewol disaster at this time, the entire country of Korea was talking about it and protesting against her. If this song was released back in 2013, when the disaster happened, then maybe they would have been, but not when it was released. I personally think the reason they never spoke on it was because they didn't want to take attention away from the protests and impeachment but still wanted to show their support. Also, Jin never said it was about 'a sad event', he said, "yes, it's about sad events," after mentioning 'sad events' like losing friendships as you grow. It gets lost in translation. So no, it was never 'confirmed'.

@@ipurpleu1668 I just tried to reply to you but accidentally deleted so I’ll type it up again 😅 thank you so much for correcting me! I should have been much more careful with my wording and done more googling for the details. (Most of my info comes from bby gang mag, the italian video and wikipedia) I didn’t mean to imply that they were in danger of being blacklisted in 2017, but that many artists had been in the years earlier which is why i personally believe they *may* have waited until 2017 to release it - obviously we’ll never know the reason for the release date and your theory makes a lot of sense too. They did secretly donate in 2014 though, right? I’m not korean and rely on fan translations so I didn’t realise jin phrased the sentence like that, thank you for letting me know! I just remember a lot of buzz in fandom that he confirmed it so I believed them, I probably should have read more alternate translations.

@@ccx7004 Yes, they secretly donated in 2014. But publicly donated in 2017 after the song was released. It was never a secret that the MV was about the tragedy. Just remember that the MV and song are essentially different.

The Italian army is more in-depth explanation ( she supposedly went to Korea after the accident) so more real footage of all the parents and protest. More than 250 school age children died. The captain was sentenced to 26 years and the president was impeached. The song also never left the Korean charts

The fact that their songs affect you so deeply proves that you are well passed being a half ARMY. It is okay to be sad because that means you are thinking of those that have experienced that lose. BTS also used this song during the pandemic to express them missing their ARMYS and for those who have lossed love ones to the virus. Our friends and family should ever be forgotten, but with Spring comes a renewed time and time heals all. Or at least gives us the ability to cope effectively with the lose but still continue on our lives. Thanks for such a beautiful and heartfelt reaction 💜🤗🇺🇲💜 To have more questions answered the explanation by Italian ARMY does a very indepth explanation of the accident and the actions of government and news. But be forwarded that you may need to watch in parts just because it may be very emotional. However it is worth it.

this is just my thought and im not sure if it's right because i haven't seen a single person mention this but when they are all "partying" and doing "fun" and normal stuff like brushing their teeth, lighting the candle for a cake, then they just all sit together and wait and stare, it kind of reminds me of the kids on the field trip who started out excited while having fun w/ their friends then had to just wait and wait and wait in their place w/o being able to do anything.

Finally! I was really waiting for this reaction. This is definitely one of my favorite BTS songs of all time. I was in Korea when this tragedy took place, and I just can't say how much this song means to the Korean people. This song is still on the Korean music charts, currently 65 on the Melon chart. My heart goes out to the victims and their families. And kudos to BTS for standing up and speaking up for justice like the true artists they are. Hope you guys have a great day!

Just watched your reaction to this beautiful song ,the explanation video is heart wrenching ,but you young women were amazing watching and dissecting the video I have watched a few reactions to this mc, but yours is the most sincere one I've seen so far ,I'm a 70 yr old bts fan who only started watching them last year through my 2 yr old grandaughter dancing to butter ,I've absolutely fell in love with them they are the most amazing young people I've ever seen their whole ethos and sincerity shines from them ,I'm from liverpool and have lived through Hillsborough and seen first hand the corruption that goes on ,,thanks for your reaction be safe x

I'm glad that BTS doesn't shy away from things like this and even though I'm miles away from what happened I will remember the lost souls also. I remember Spring Day when it came out and I heard a little bit about what is was about so I went and followed up, the more I researched the Ferry Disaster the more angry it made me. As a mother it is beyond me how the actions of a few took the lives of so many for no reason. I remember seeing the ferry on it's side and couldn't figure out why so many students were lost because it wasn't that far off shore but to my amazement I read the students were told to stay in their cabins, while the Captain and crew got off the ship as it capsized , it was a brave student (that later drowned) that did an emergency call to let people know that the ship was sinking. RIP to the lives lost.

From everything I've seen, I think you're right -- the song was written about loss (be it death of a loved one, loss of a friend, or loss of a lover, etc) and they made this video "around" it. I'm always amazed at how brave they were to do it. Thankfully, the "government" which followed this has not been the same way....and has embraced the ideals that BTS puts forward. Hopefully, their new president will continue that.

Thank you for reacting to this beautiful song. 💜 I think it's much better you watch the explanation video by "Italian Army". She did deep research on the Sewol tragedy and the symbolisms. Warning though, since it's pretty detailed, you would need to prepare a lot of tissues for this. We encourage you to watch it, but it's up to you guys. :)

Yes I was also going to suggest the one by Italian ARMY but also thinking I am not sure Erin should watch it the news clips can be very hard to watch and even though I have seen it many times I still have to be in the right frame of mind to be able to watch a reaction to it again....but it really does have a lot of good information in it and I do think more people should see it.

@MyCupOfTv I'd really recommend watching Stephanie Soo AKA Rotten Mango's video on the Sewol Ferry tragedy. She did a lot of research and goes really in depth about the events before, during and after the tragedy from different points of views.

Italian ARMY also does an explanation. It has more symbolism & even references Hillsborough. The president of South Korea was eventually charged with corruption & impeached. It is more difficult to watch, because there is actual footage. The song has stayed on the Korean charts for 260 weeks.

Bts has probably more than 100 songs n many many hidden songs...but I am saying this 99% every damn song of bts have meaning behind it except for 'Butter' I think..becoz even permission to dance has meaning to it ( they talk abt in behind the scenes)

the Queen!! though i cant rewatch the Italian explanation because its so heartbreaking. the song can be interpreted in many ways. and the boys were very brave to release tgis MV. but all ARMYs should know about it. 💜

I’m glad you reacted to it because it is a beautiful song with a deep meaningful, unforgettable message which I believe was the intent but if you choose to watch the explanation by Italian Army, I absolutely suggest you do so without recording and be certain to have a box of tissue with you. It's melancholy but hopeful. I loved the Class of 2020 live of it. Just beautiful vocals by them all. I adore songs with feels. =0] We call Spring Day “the queen” because it has never once left the Korean charts since its release 5 years ago! The citizens of Korea also want to remember. You should check out Song So Hee singing spring day even if you don't react to it on KZfaq. Its beautiful I felt her sorrow and rage while she was singing Spring Day. If you do react to it on KZfaq I think you'll have to put a filter on it so it doesn't get blocked.

It took a while for them to be able to openly say that this song was about the tragedy because the sitting government at that point would blacklist all artists who would spread anything about it since they still tried to cover it up. But it was well known by the people that the government was at fault and covering things up and in the end the Captain , some crew from the boat and even the Korean president went to jail for this. I'm not sure if it still is but last year 2021 Spring Day was still on the charts in Korea 4yrs after the song came out because it ment so much for Koreans that it's also sort of a memorial keep listening to it and keeping it on the chart

@@wolfscry9570 BTS has also never confirmed the song was about it. PDogg confirmed that they dedicated it to the tragedy, but the members have spoke again and again about the personal reason why writing the song. And before you try to quote Jin, Jin said it was about “sad events, like losing friendships”. Not sure why people mistranslate or only spread have of that statement to make it sound like he confirmed it.
