Just watched both your vids on this project, and you're very talented. Only thing I wish you had shown in this part was the stitching as I have no idea how to do that. Did you do that by hand or do you have a machine? Also, I noticed when you punched the holes with the 4-hole "fork" you did it over another piece of scrap leather. Does that help with the exit holes on the backside? This back clip looks very well done, but although they're convenient I haven't had good luck with belt clips being that secure, and kind of prefer what looks like a scout carry leather loop on the back as shown in Part 1. Although that clip looks like it would handle a 1.5" belt OK... I also like the plain leather, but saw one guy who imprints a design / pattern in the wet leather before he cuts it, along the top outside mouth of the sheath. Details on fastening the clip with the rivet securely would also be welcome. I have most of these supplies (edge dressing, contact cement, utility knife, Pecards / Fiebings, even some antler for boning in the sheath) and have wet fitted existing sheaths to folding knives before with varying degrees of tightness, but would need to get a few leather working tools it looks like. Is there some place you recommend for leather and tools? Finally, I would definitely do this for my 110, but the knife that really needs it that I carry all the time is a beefy full size Chaves 229 Redencion, which may be easier or harder, not sure. Anyway, apologies for all the questions, and hope you get more subscribers as you deserve it! Thanks for the detailed look at your very nice work. 👍🏼

Thanks! Um…let’s see…stitching is done by hand with two needles. I have a wallet video showing some stitching coming soon. Scrap leather underneath when punching helps with exit holes and prevents unwanted impressions from work surface. Tandy Leather has some affordable tools. I like to get Herman oak veg tan leather from Springfield Leather Company. They sometimes have economy sides. I prefer the side loop too, but my brother wanted a clip. I wished the clip was a little wider. Hope I answered everything. Good luck! If I can do it, anyone can. Just takes some time and practice.

@@wyomingwright Great info, thanks! I’ll order some leather and basic tools and at least get started. I can always give my first few “nice try’s” away, LOL! I found your video because I was just looking for a simple pouch sheath, no strap over the top of the knife to undo. I must have 6 or 7 of those standard black Buck 110 and 112 snap pouches, but just don’t care for them, especially under a jacket. I’ll start with the back belt loop and go from there, watching your videos carefully, and will look for your stitching video when it comes. Thanks again!

Was disappointed that you didn't show the stitching process. Enjoyed the rest.👍

While I agree with the aesthetic of no screw/rivet retaining the clip, it'll be interesting to see how it holds up in daily use. Really like your work and enjoy your YT posts.

Do you wear it so the part of the knife sticking out is facing upwards or downwards on your side?

I ordered that one off Etsy. It has since broken. Lately I’ve been using the Spyderco g-clip or the ulti clip. Both can be found with a google search. Best of luck!

Do you ever make wet molded Buck sheaths for sale ?
@wyomingwright
@wyomingwright Жыл бұрын
I haven't yet. I've always done leather work just for myself, family, and friends. But I might change that in the future. If I produce any for sale, I will post a video. Thanks for your interest!

What weight leather did you use? I like the holster and want too make one with a little bit wider clip. Do you recommend staining the leather before molding or wait until the sheath is complete?
@wyomingwright
@wyomingwright Жыл бұрын
I think 5 oz is about the right balance between thickness and moldability. I don't usually dye mine so I am not sure I can comment on that. I usually add my leather treatments after the leather has been formed. Lately dip all my sheaths in melted wax after they have been formed. They come out solid with a nice brown color.

I ordered it from Double X Knives on Etsy. www.etsy.com/listing/671120993/grey-tumbled-metal-knife-sheath-clip?ref=yr_purchases It looks like he's not selling right now, but there are other similar clips out there. I like it a lot. Good stiffness, but I wish it was a quarter inch wider. Best of luck to you!

Nice looking sheath. A few pointers though I'd definitely use a rivet cause your clip will slip over time cause that glue won't hood forever. Also you never said what weight leather your using. It looks to be 5-6 oz. And if you're doing an informative vid you need to show each step while th some explanation, you skipped completely over stitching and furnishing your edges,also what kinda wax you put on.

Thanks for the vid. I know everyone has their own way and that's fine but I would like to point out a couple of things as it may help other. 1st ur the only person I've seen that uses that glue, and if it works for u great. To me it seems very thin{watered down}. Also most use 2 coats of glue then let it get tacky before putting the pieces together. Might suggest drawing a line at least on the flat leather as its easy to go over the glue space. Then I don't understand the point of hanging the heavy part of the leather off the wood to make ur sew holes, then not even showing ur sewing. Then u put edging on it without buffing it on any wood? or explaining that ur using edging stain? And backing up what good purpose why ur leather is just glued {probably not cured} sticking the knife in and taking the chance of tearing or at the very least making the glue weak?

A number of people use that exact same cement. I personally use barge cement. Corter leather uses this same stuff in his videos and he's made stuff like note book covers for the Whitehouse. I personally tried it but I make holsters with folds so I need something stronger. And he did burnish his edges he just didn't show him doing it. And he punches his holes like that on the edge of board cause he has a clip

This cement works great for me. Many people use it. Doesn’t matter how thin it is as, like you said, you let it dry until tacky. I was trying not to make my video too long. That’s why I didn’t show the sewing and burnishing. I burnish with an antler and paper. As shown in the video, I used Fiebings Edge Dressing in brown. Thanks for the critical eye. Don’t make too many assumptions. Cheers

I like proper leather glue over the cement, because it marries leather together faster and faster means less waiting
Should I dip my leather knife sheath in hot wax?
