Buck used to make their blades very hard (the old cutting a nail in half ads), but complaints about the difficulty in sharpening them led to Buck producing knives with a hardness more like other outdoor knives. I have drooled over Buck knives in hardware stores since I was a kid 60 years ago. I loved this video.

Love this video, have watched it quite a few times. On the Buck 119: Technically it is a full stick tang, and is not fragile but quite a robust design. Not much you really can't do with it, but we grew up using hatchets and axes for fire wood and knives for game, food and whittling.

The Buck 119 was THE knife that all of us scouts wanted back in the early '70's. We didn't know anything about tangs or exotic steels, it just looked cool :) I finally got one and used it for many years. A classic.

Isn't it funny that the steels which served us so well for so many years have sudenly become "crap steel" in so many people's eyes? Yet, I bet most of those Internet Steel experts would not be able to tell a difference if they didn't know.

I have a Buck model 119 knife and love it very much. It is the second one I purchased and the first one was given to my grandfather after he saw it many years ago. I got the first one while stationed in California at an airbase there and after giving it away I purchased the model 120 from the same airbase exchange since they had sold out of the one I had. I got my second one after retiring from my state job and deciding to get one with my name etched on it. I still have my model 120 also and now many other knives as well. I have my 119 knife with my collection which I don't use for every day use and keep that one as a collector's item.

People tend to be overly dramatic when it comes to knife tangs. Haven't broken a single stick tang knife in my life, and i definitely don't go easy on them. I guess most of the time someone breaks on the failure can be accountet to the user, or the knife was just cheap junk...
@trapperscout2046
@trapperscout2046 3 жыл бұрын
Very True. For centuries, swords have been made with similar tang construction to the Buck 119 and they've worked perfectly fine. Mora knives don't have full tang construction, and yet are a favorite amongst bushcrafters. Most of the failures I see from these type of knives are from batoning or chopping. I am not completely against batoning and chopping with knives, however, for those that don't want to break their Buck 119, Kabar, and Mora type knives, there are ways to get around it. Something as simple as carrying a folding saw with you or taking five minutes to carve a wooden wedge for splitting or using the crotch of a tree for snapping logs can save you from having to use your knife for wood processing.

Hi Brian, I have a Buck 119 and yes, I would trust it with my life. It's not like that Bk -2. You give it a couple of bangs and the knife breaks on you. It's a very robust knife. It can handle batoning. For a rat tail tang knife, it does everything that a full tang does. I was raised with this knife. 😃

If you want to see what the tang on this knife looks like go to the Buck website, go to the Custom Shop where you will find the 119. There are several choices for blade finishes, handle materials, and two choices for pommels. The 119 shown as an example will change with the selected changes. Change the blade and a new blade rotates in, and as it does (if you look quick) you will see the tang with it’s hole in the end (the black blade shows it best). Changing the handle will show that the tang goes completely through the handle. into the pommel. The most telling is the pommel change where you see the tang protruding from the end of the handle with it’s hole. The tang is riveted or pinned through the pommel (closely examine the sides of the pommel and you will see the pin). The 119 tang is not a rat tail or a stick or any other kind of push tang. It is a half tang which means that the tang is half the width of the blade and goes all the way through the handle. So, even though it is not full tang in the classic sense of the word, it is a very strong knife. My 119 was my companion through my 14 years as a Scoutmaster, and most all of my backpacking adventures, and served me excellently. I have batoned with it on occasion with no ill effects, but then I’m a “Nessmuk” man and always have a hand axe. You know I’d be more than willing to bet that “Ole George” (“the father of bushcraft”) never batoned that odd looking knife of his either. I enjoy your channel, keep up the good work!

I had a Buck 120 since late 70's. It is the same as 119 except with a 7" blade. It is not a bushcraft knife but an excellent hunting knife - great for dear and wild hogs. It makes a good camp kitchen knife too. ☺ In other words a great hunting knife.

I had it since the 70’s but it was stolen along with my other knives when my house was broke into. I finally decided to buy another for camping in the Mid 80’s. I still have it today. I’m going to buy my nephew the smaller one for his camping this summer. The + denotes the year the knife was made. I have a Buck 112 folder I’ve owned since the 80’s.

And then all kindling , we brought the firewood with us. My 119 is a camp knife ,hunting knife ,and general use knife. My Buck 120 never comes out the sheath it's a last resort knife , always has been. I bought the 119 to cut up meat and vegetables , and the 120 for protection. Every knife should have a purpose.

I believe the "+" symbol after the "119" is a date code of manufacture. Also, I believe the knife IS a tang through handle knife. You just dont see the tang sandwiched in the handle. That handle is NOT coming loose but I agree with your decision not to baton with it. That is reserved for a life or death survival situation, which, if you think about it, could very well be something a hunter might find himself in.

That was cool man ❗️ I just bought one at a knife show. I paid a bit 2 much for it as it’s been sitting around for a few years and has definitely seen a few too many shows 😆…. It has the Brass and Cocobola handle but the Brass lost most of it’s polish and has scratches in it . The Blade is in Perfectly Un-Used Condition and that’s the end that really counts anyway ❕ I basically paid the price of a Mint in Box Brand - New One 🤨. I just couldn’t start chewing the Old-timer that was selling it down 😖. For what, to save $20-30 bucks ⁉️ I mean, the poor old guy could barely get out of his chair and he was SO HAPPY …..I just couldn’t do it 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️.. Anyhow, I agree - This knife is really Bad-Ass and has a Great feel to it . VERY SHARP BLADE. I really liked your Video starting a fire with the wood-shavings. I really need to learn that skill 🤔. Thanks for sharing . Your video hit home with me on just how important a knife is in a survival situation.. It’s so much more than just a weapon. It can very well be the difference between life and death ☠️. I will definitely check out your site for sure ✅.

Nice review. But I have to say if you get one with the Cocobolla handle, the one with brass fittings is the one to get! Also, the tang goes all the way to the butt with a rivet through it, and while it’s thinner than the whole blade width, it’s much thicker than a standard stick tang.

I have the 75 year one with the black handle. Two of them actually. They were my dad's knives. One of them I have wrapped in leather chords treated to repel water. And I can tell you if you think that knife is comfortable try it with soft leather cord. It's like a Cadillac. My hands are big enough because I'm a big guy that it looks like a 4-inch knife in someone else's hand. I have used it for about everything and never had any trouble. And as far as I know there are no scratches on it. It doesn't exactly scratch unless you try to scratch it. You just wide the sap off the blade and you're good to go. I carry it as a belt knife. But I also have a more of a Bushcraft knife I carry all my utility bill. Because I like to always have a backup. If I'm comfortable in Camp and have my belt hanging up and my haversack hanging somewhere I still have a knife in hands reach for whatever comes up. I have looked at the diagram of the buck knife and it claims The Ting goes all the way back to the butt piece. Better than 3/4 of the handle. But I have never taken it apart or broken it. so who knows. I know it's a beauty and it's not going to fall out of that Sheaf even if I tumble down the side of a hill and ended up on my head.

That is a great company and a great family running a company a credit to the knife business. I've had one for a very very long time it went up Mount Mitchell with me. And it's been to the smokies with me more than once. I have a lot of knives but I seem to stick this one in the pack when I go in places where I know there are bears. Don't know why I just trust it. I have the black handle on mine but I have the general with a 7-inch blade and I have the cocobolo wood. Which you can get a good grip on. There's reasons I like this knife and it's the reasons I carry it hunted with one I've skinned deer and everything else with it it's just a good knife like you said it's the way they used to make them . But the Tang goes further back than you think and it is pinned in. Keep it and give it to your son or keep it for yourself. Oh yeah I do stick it in my pack but it's on my hip when I'm in the woods

Awesome buck 119 USA
@-NoneOfYourBusiness
@-NoneOfYourBusiness 4 жыл бұрын
I got two Buck 119s with custom sheaths. They are full tang and its not a rat tail tang but a fairly large tang soldered to the pommel. Very sturdy and won't fail unless you try to chop down a tree. These knives come from a very strange and different parallel universe called "The 1940s" when men were dying in the wilderness like flies since they didn't know how to baton, never heard of G10 and didn't wear paracord bracelets. It was a massacre. Poor guys with their oiled wool and their hatchets.
@SurvivalOnPurpose

I stand corrected. Oiled wool?
@-NoneOfYourBusiness
@-NoneOfYourBusiness 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Oiled wool. Fishermen (and others) were wearing untreated wool in these days so the lanolin (natural animal oil) was still in the wool fibers. Much (much) more water resistant than modern over-washed / treated wool. You can still find some untreated wool sweaters, etc. Or re-lanolize them.

I know it's not built for survival but one thing about buck knives they come sharp and the sharpen up nicely. Thanks for the review and sharing your thoughts but I have to leave now and go to my wallmart and buy one of these 119s. And God bless 🇺🇸

+ is 1991, making it 425m steel alloy, they went to 420hc in 1992. There are plenty of 119 beaters on ebay for cheap, or vintage pre 86 knives, so if you know which sheaths are 70s ( dangle or swivel) you might get a pre 81 made of 440c steel. I have examples of each, and the 440c is hard to sharpen, but holds a wicked edge. But then they all do. So if you can spare the funds, $30 to $50 to get a used blck one, please show us how they balence. I really enjoy your channel and watch all your videos. I am not a hunter myself, but I hear this is the ULTIMATE deer knife. Got the black one in a pawn shop in pristine condition yesterday for 25 bucks! They are $70 on line now. Had to get it for that! Buck and Gerber 420 steel seems far better than "regular" 420 for some reason.

Well done..Yes i would like to see more Buck knives like the models 110 and 112 folders , last year i bought one of each in the limited edition models .. Finally Buck brought out the 112 in Coco Bolo wood, and D-2 steel .. oh yes i ordered one .. Good filming Brian ..

Good review of a great knife. I have two of them. One is the standard black phenolic handle with aluminum guard and pommel. The other is cocobolo wood with brass. Also if you look closer at the "plus" sign on the tang its actually a date code for the year 2019. If you google date codes for Buck knives you can see all the different date codes they used over the years.

There is one 2 feet away right now. I got CJs autograph last year. I want the version shown here. I'm pretty sure it is stick tang and the aluminum pommel is screwed on and epoxied along with the handles into place. It's a hunting knife. Not a thrower. So I agree with your decision not to BOARD or baton test that my brother.😂 You can get CSSRKs on Amazon now for 60 bucks or less. Go ahead...Baton that and see if you can break one. I did cut up a big old pot of fixins for a Mock Turtle Soup. Survivor man did some smart batoning and survival work on his show with one all the time!

I understand where you are coming from. I use Buck knives almost exclusively for there quality and durability. I do view them as a tool first though. I have a Buck 110 folding knife as a daily carry. It came nice and pretty with polished brass. Now it looks like it went through a cement mixer, but it still works great!. I have a full tang fixed blade for camping. I used a hand file and straightened the back so that it would strike a ferro rod nicely. To put it simply, for me they just can't be beat!

I have the Buck 105, actually I have 2 of them. One is a newer Model I picked up about 10 years ago. The other is the one my Father carried in way too many cold States while hunting. (Yes he passed it along to me and yes there is still some Caribou Hair stuck in the Guard.) My Buck is the one I carry for processing Game and for small Camp Chores. I also carry a Condor Woodlore for working around Camp. (It too works great as a Skinner.) As for things like splitting Wood and Chopping. I have an Axe and a Saw that I carry.

That is a great looking/performing knife. The 119 was my first fixed blade. The phenolic handle material (black) is what billiard balls are made of, so you know it is tough. I don't have the cocobolo model yet. If someone has a bias against hollow grinds, they should spend some time with this knife. They might change their minds.

I also carried a Buck 119 in the army. I eventually replaced it with a K-Bar but only because I didn't mind beating up the K-Bar and the K-Bar only cost $20 back then. The 119 was a better, sharper and stronger knife and I had to cover up the shiny parts on the handle with 100 mph tape. The 119 sheath was more rigid and hollow which made more noise bouncing around on my web gear. I still have both knives around here somewhere.
