I have a Buck 120 that I purchased through a mail order catalog in the 90's, never used this knife and it's been in the back shelf of my gun safe forever. Over the last 5 years I've once again started buying knives, mostly Case collectable knives but also bushcrafter knives especially Esee. But, for about 6 months, I've had the urge to get the Buck 124 and yesterday while at work I went online and ordered a new one. Still waiting for the new 124 to arrive I decided to lookup the date on my 120. Reaching to t rear of my safe I pulled out a full tang Buck knife in it's original sheath. My first thought was that 124 aren't fully tang knives....nope but a 1995 124 certainly is!!! 😉 Big surprise! Now I have a new 2023 Buck 124 in route to go with my 1995 Buck 124. Feeling excited 😄

The 120 is a great compromise between the 119 and 124 in terms of raw durability. There's some russian guy who stress tests knives till they break; the 119 didn't last super long, but the 120, holy cow it impressed even him. He stabbed it dozens of times through a steel car body panel and never damaged the tip, he smashed though a cider block, chopped and battened logs, etc... he stabbed it into a stump and wrenched it back and fourth dozens of times, finally failed when he drove it several inches deep with a hammer and then tried to bend it with all his strength, broke at the tip and where it meets the handle simultaneously, but he wasn't hurt. He's done many knives with beefier, full tangs that didn't hold out anywhere near as long.

I just saw that video a few weeks ago. I was even surprised by watching it. I thought the trunk of the car would have broken it. By his reactions, I think he thought so as well!

The 119 is better. The 124 hollow grind is to long and makes the cutting end thin and weak. The 124 looks like a beast but it's not. The 119 is lighter, more easy to handle and the 119 pro series with the S35VN steel is even stronger. I almost got myself a 124 but when i had a close look i changed my mind, the 119 or the 119 pro are the ones to go for.

I am so sorry for your loss. I do concur that having a robust end of the world blade such as you profiled here is wise. I have 2 Buck knives I really like; a 121 Fisherman and a 103 skinner. Specialized blades really, but the 121 is actually a good general purpose knife for several tasks. It however does pale in comparison to a 1 knife for everything 119 or 124. You just can't make a small or medium knife do the extreme tasks a heavy one will do on demand. Big knives tend to be too big most of the time, but always have that reserve capacity when things literally go to hell in a hand basket. That's just the way it is with a tool; it either has it or it doesn't. A quality big blade always has it whether you ever need it or not. Edit: Failed to mention the 120. I was thinking of 3 of Bucks models simultaneously, almost in the same class. 119, 120 and 124. Kind of a big, bigger, biggest sort of thought really. All 3 are serious field blades for rough, rough, circumstances.

A far more useful combination of fixed blades from Buck would be the 124 and 102, the 119 is too large for fine cutting tasks and is overshadowed in the large knife roll by the 124, by choosing the 102 instead you get a knife that can fit your fine cutting, bird and trout type tasks, and still have all the functionality of the 124 while saving weight.

You can most definitely do fine wood carving work with a 119 you can view videos on KZfaq about it. As for it being to small, compared to 124, the 124 for me is way too huge unless I have giant hands. If I need anything bigger than a 119 is rather use my machete or axe.
@johnhildenbrand2642
@johnhildenbrand2642 10 ай бұрын
@rebelsouljaz You can, sure, you can also carve with an axe or hatchet, but it isn't the preferred tool. I generally prefer a smaller knife for wood working and fine carving, but that old survival trope stands true, "the best knife in a survival situation is the one you have on you."

Sorry for your loss!! Knife-use philosophy is what I am all about. To split logs in the wilderness one Must use a light axe, yet for skinning, food prep, or anything else that is light, i will use the knife, for the knife was intended and designed for that use! How did our ancestors ever survive?? With a knife, an light axe always!!! Now, minimalists are going to complain that carrying 3 lbs extra is killing them!! LOL!! What woosses we have today!!

I live in England and for some bizarre reason the 124 is not available here. I'm sorry for your loss. Full tang is absolutely the most bomb proof you can get when it comes to knives. My main set up is a buck 117 small special and an esee 5 for heavier tasks. Sometimes I leave the larger knife at home and bring a hatchet instead. I've always kind of felt like a hatchet trumps a big knife but I was raised by a man who skinned and butchered deer with his swedish 1 ¹/⁴ lb hatchet, so I'm a little biased lol

For chopping, a good axe, a good saw, and large bowie for self defense and other camp chores, and small 4 inch blade for fine tasks like skinning, cutting fruit, etc. That 124 is not heavy enough for chopping trees. Even a ontario sp53 would be better..or kabar cutlass.

your knife will save your life. not only is it a great tool in itself but you also use it to make other tools, make traps, make fire and make shelter. they aren't very good for self defence if the other guy has a gun. For urban survival, a leatherman will save your life

I use the buck 120 and buck 105 mostly . No problems in bushcraft, hunting , camping and fishing in over 40 years . I would bet my life on them . I prefer s30v of the different buck steel. It stays sharper longer than s35vn . i have tested them all . Most my bucks are older so 440 made . The buck 124 is my least favorite of these 3 knives . the 124 is big and bulky with hot spots during long use . The 119 and 120 are light and fast with no hot spots . When you have 3 deer hanging and have to get the butchering done , the buck 124 is not the knife for the job. I took my new buck 124 apart and ground the grip down . I already had the handles off , so did some file work . The upgraded the handles . Better than it was new . I am probably going to sell the 124 with the custom sheath .

I strongly disagree. Strongly disagree. The # 120 and 124 will not work as a bushcraft or survival knife at all. They break. That's right they will break. They were never intended for survival, so the steel wasn't designed as a beater knife. Nor was it designed for prying or chopping wood. The steel is brittle. Bad advice will get people killed or hurt. ## If you want a protection, survival knife I suggest you get a Cold Steel 1917 Frontier. It is made in India out of a truck leaf spring. Every single knife is made by hand. They are made by individuals who work from their homes, YT has videos of this. They cannot break. Bend maybe with a couple thousand pounds of force which a human can't do by hand. The #105 # 119 are perfect for knife use such as cleaning fish ,deer ,squirrels etc. I carry a saw, camp ax, Frontier Bowie and the buck # 119, and a case pocketknife. If you're going to help people, try and at least have a clue what you're talking about. Email Buck knives, they will tell you flat out you're wrong. They will tell you their knives are not designed or made for contact sports. Peace.

The Buck 120 has a rat tail tang and thin tip, so I tell people to be careful if they want to chop or baton with it. You are wrong though for the 124. I know several people who have been using, chopping, and battening with their 124 for over 30 years and it is still going strong, The disclaimer on Buck's site for their warranty on the 124 is that it isn't intended to be used as hammers, chisels, pry bars, or screwdrivers. The 124 Frontiersman with its full exposed tang and straight back blade is designed as their more solid hunting and bushcraft knife. I really like Cold Steel knives and agree with you they are amazing. I keep watching though since they sold the company to another company if the quality will go down. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!

Bucks are almost indestructible, watch the end of this video of a Buck 105 being beat silly by a young guy beating it through a knotted up chunk of hardwood. No knife is better lookin that the classic Bucks.
