A high value traditional knife that offers good capabilities at its price point. Not tactical and not flashy but it remains a good seller because it just works! ///////////////////// Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 7 out of 10 (price considered)

To illustrate what kind of company Buck is, i know a Vietnam Veteran of the 101st, who had a Buck 120 he bought before deployment. The stitching started to rot in the intense heat & humidity of the jungle. He wrote a letter to Buck, and very quickly received a new sheath stitched with fishing line, which wouldn't rot, along with a note from Chuck Buck! Last year, my well worn 110 needed some work, and they made it like new, and returned it within 3 weeks. Great company, Great service.

My 119 was made between 1972 and 1974 in 440C stainless. Bought it and a 112 from a fellow airman in 1977, It was next to impossible to sharpen. Sent it back to the factory where they sharpened and polished it to look just like this new blade. Love the 119!

Buck makes the best value knives around, right here in the USA. With the Bos heat treat, 420HC acts more like good AUS-8, or even like a stainless 5160. While the Codura sheath stays drier, Buck includes some really nice leather sheaths with their knives, at very low prices. The 119 is an absolute classic knife, and belongs in every collections. It is still a 1st class hunting knife and a great camping blade.

The pommel is pinned from the side. You can actually see the pin on some older knives due to difference in the type of aluminum used for the pin, on newer knives you have to make an effort to look for it but sometimes it is discernible as move the pommel on light. This is a very valid method also used on many other knives like the traditional style Ka-Bar, Ontario and Camillus knives issued to the Marines

I've had mine for 30 years. I am a big fan of Buck sheath knives. Yes it is full tang, or an overmoulded tang. The "blood" groove nothing more then a Fuller to lighten up the knife. Is it a tactical knife, in a pinch it could be. Is it a good survival knife, of course. Would I process wood with it, NO. But I would never batton or chop wood with any knife. Thats what a axe or saw is for. But this is a great knife that has been around for at least 40+ years.

Usually the so called "blood groves" especially with kitchen knives prevent a vacume effect like when slicing meat or fruits. It allows the slice to fall off the blade by creating an air pocket underneath. Great video as always. *****

I suspect the 'buttcap' or pommel is threaded on. Either that or the (threaded)tang is held on with a barrel nut The tang may be threaded, however it is very common to weld on studding/treaded rod to save time and money. The Spanish & Italians do that and I believe Gil Hibben did that for hir R III bowie. Shouldn't make a major difference.

@fretfeeler I KNOW they make leather sheaths, but it doesnt matter if you cant buy them at walmart. And if you've actually been in the rain with cordura, nylon or whatever, you would know it doesnt dry out that quickly, especially when the water is to the point where its in your sheath.

@nickpprimm Nylon, being made of synthetic materials, is in itself "water resistant". Treated leather with mink oil for example, will repel water as good as plastic but will not be waterproof.

The WM 119 specials are indeed made in the USA. But the nylon sheaths are imported. I got mine at WM for $35. I like the knife especially for the price. I would rather have the leather sheath because i do a lot of hiking and the knife rattles around in the plastic insert and makes some noise which i find annoying. I'll probably get the leather sheath atsome point.

Wal-Mart is able to sell these knives as well as a lot of other products cheaper due to volume sales. As the Buck rep states, the company refuses to lower the quality of the product for any retailer and that definitelly applies to the knife itself but not the scabbard. Even the leather scabbard is now made in Mexico, as marked on the sticker in the plastic liner but the quality is still there somewhat.

I have used this knife somewhat abusively, one day I was chopping at a small 1 inch in diameter oak sapling, then a 1 inch long piece of steel flew off the knife, I love this knife, but the 440 steel kills the durability but it awesome on rust resistance

I know that leather sheaths aren't better, but the only reason most nylon sheaths repel water is because of the plastic insert. I may be wrong, but the only sheaths that completely repel water are kydex.

I actually just bought this knife and it's actually on the packaging called it a "blood groove", so I did a google search on this topic and found the blood groove has nothing to do with actual blood. You are correct, but the tool used to create this groove is called a Fuller. The groove is often called many different things even "blood gutters". - The More You Know

@Fretfeeler Yeah metaluragy is hard to master, even the masters have trouble. The trouble with production knives is the quality of steel. If the knife is lets say .09 carbon, it will require a different heat treatment than a .10 carbon blade. Its pretty much a craps shoot with production blades unless it is supervised with a highly trained expert from slab (when it comes in from the foundry) to finished product. You can have a little leeway as far as quality goes (very good - excellent),

@nickpprimm - Why would you need a drain hole with a nylon sheath, when nylon dries out in a few minutes and is water repellent to begin with? This knife is unaffected by water unless you throw it in the ocean and forget it. The leather sheath that you get in places other than WAL*MART also has a drain hole, by the way. Think about it.

Now it's getting interesting :) First, I did not write "strengthen," I said "stiffen." In the Buck 119 example, you may be absolutely right. However, I have a couple of bayonets from the 19th century that have very serious fullers (blood grooves). I am not convinced that these do not add significant stiffness to the blade even compared with a flat slab of comparable steel. I have not, however, seen or done any practical tests. If you know of any online, please share them.
