This is my food plot in June. And mid June is a great time to rotate in that Buckwheat for the deer
The deer enjoyed my Winter Rye last fall and this spring . Now this serial grain (Winter Rye) has grown and matured to the point that deer will no longer eat it. It’s acting as a weed suppressant at this point. The Awn at the top of the stalks is just about to reseed . I do not want that . I wanna go into my next crop, Buckwheat .
Buckwheat suppresses weeds and attracts beneficial insects and pollinators with its abundant blossoms. It is easy to kill, and reportedly extracts soil phosphorus from soil better than most grain-type cover crops. Buckwheat thrives in cool, moist conditions but it is not frost tolerant, this is why we waited here in Upstate NY for early June to plant it . The buckwheat seed came from deer creek seed company and so far I have been happy with it
We will let the buckwheat grow and stand until end of summer . Then we are gunna use a cultipacker and smash it down. Into that buckwheat for the deer we will seed brassica and more serial grains . May do rye grain again. May try winter wheat this season
Let hope for great stand of buckwheat and get these deer in there for the fall bow hunting season. Stay tuned . Please like and follow always doing some land-management and deer Habitat type work around
the 🌿Ranch🍀
We terminated the rye with glyphosate sprayed 2 quarts per acre in my Chapin ATV sprayers

Nice video series showing the progression throughout the months! Doing something similar in the NW lower of MI with more of a mix ready to go in early June for the short duration cover after last year's rye!

I'm watching your video because I want to keep deer out of my food plot and redirect them elsewhere. I read buckwheat is their jam. Stumbled upon your great instructional video. I want to offer you something in return. An idea, before you spray. You see, there's a market for your rye stalks. People make straw ornaments and art pieces from it and will pay good money for it. I know this because I have had hard time finding the material. Check out the Finnish Himmeli ornaments and how much those go for. Rye is the preferred crop. Collect some of your the straw green at the end of the season, mold free, then dry it in bunches until it turns golden. Sell it and make money. Good luck!

Good job man. Did you initially till that before planting cereal rye? I have an old hay field that is dormant and I would like to spread buckwheat like this in the spring summer for the soil. Spray it and try clover and chicory in fall.

Nice job, appreciate the specific details. Did you simply add 2 quarts gly to 12 gallon tank filled with water or what ratio did you mix?
@figandcloverranch5871
@figandcloverranch5871 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I just added 2 quarts per acre of Gly. And drive over it . My plot is a 1/3 of an acre so o divided the 2 quarts by 3 and poured into the 12 gallons

I'm new to this won't the spray hurt the seed
@figandcloverranch5871
@figandcloverranch5871 6 ай бұрын
Depends on spray. But in my videos case round up or glyphosate is what’s know as a post-emergent & only kills what’s growing once it touches the ground it breaks down . So the seed germinates after spraying and it’s past the killing ability of the spraying 💦 Thanks for watching and commenting 👨🏻👍🏼

Why not use a summer plot like soybeans or other for summer food better than buckwheat?
@figandcloverranch5871
@figandcloverranch5871 3 жыл бұрын
Right now my plot is only just over a quarter acre. I Have plans to expand in future . From what I understand the deer would hammer beans too much on my micro-food-plot. So I would got into fall on bare dirt. I want my plot to super exciting and attracting during season so I am gunna grow better food for the deer then.. Also I don’t live on my 🌿Ranch🍀 so I can’t monitor or work my beans all summer . Thank you for watching 👨🏻👍🏼 More to come, stay tuned

@@figandcloverranch5871 A quarter of an acre probably decent size but you plant forage soy beans they grow as they eat them And it puts nitrogen in the ground

@@Hunterworks using the buckwheat for same principle . And I don’t wanna till mid next month. But beans will be attempted in future once I expand . Covid slowed my food plot expansion project and funds
